fun fact about togame, his voice actor also voices a jojo character named "Weather Report" (you see where i'm going with this?)
i want to believe that the one singular contact number in sakura's phone is not in fact his piss poor attempt to use a phone, but rather a well-kept secret point of contact between him and one certain togame jo. after the showdown with shishitoren and the rooftop celebration, togame and sakura remain... curious about each other. it starts off surface-level enough. togame wants to find a way to repay his debts somehow -- keep an avenue available to someday prove to sakura that he isn't so lame anymore.
he's eternally thankful to sakura for snapping him out of whatever fugue state choji's mistakes put him in and wants to actually befriend sakura because of it. make sure he hasnt changed and all. meanwhile sakura contemplates it, because umemiya WAS right in the grand scheme of things and he did somehow "communicate" with togame in their fight. he wants to keep talking to togame, sort of. learn all the things he couldn't gather with his jabs and kicks. so they both find themselves at the tunnel a few days after the fight as complete coincidence.
its complete fate they ran into each other without meaning to, but togame wastes no time in warmly greeting sakura and chatting him up. night begins to creep up and at that point sakura knows they've gotta start getting home if they both don't wanna start shit sitting out at night on territory boundaries while wearing their respective recognizable uniforms. he's hesitant to pull away from the conversation though and togame seizes the opportunity to ask for sakura's (barely used) phone and write himself into sakura's contacts. (he doesn't even have a password btw)
"Wow~ Not a single person on here, Othello-kun."
"Hah? What th' hell would I even need it for? If I need something, I can just go ask in person. None of that slow, boring texting crap."
"You really live life too fast, haha. What if it's too small for the effort? Or you can't come find me in time? Shishitoren territory is quite far from Furin's campus, after all."
"What would I even need'ta ask you that isn't urgent enough to come here, scraggly?"
Togame simply laughs under his breath. "Anything you can think of." he hands the phone back to Sakura, screen lit up with a single new contact under the name 'Weather.'
That's stupid.
The older boy continues to tease Sakura. "Call me to ask about the weather, if you really can't come up with anything at all. I promise I'd pick up; it's the least I can do for you after everything."
They part ways, and even if neither of them mention it -- Sakura keeps this encounter close to his chest. Thinks about it when his classmates make fun of him for it the very next day, even as he says nothing and lets them tease him. With 5 new names in his list of contacts, he remembers to go home and scroll to 'W' and asks about the weather tomorrow. Asks a whole lot of other things too. All until he falls asleep.
(He never changes Togame's contact name after that. Not even months later, stranded on a bridge and staring down an army of enemies and another black-haired tall douchebag to humble. What will the weather be like tomorrow? Clear motherfuckin' skies, baby.)
okay but when sakura does eventually become the top of bofurin he is going to be absolutely adored by the whole community??
with umemiya its a little different because umemiyas charm comes from his friendly, head empty demeanor. little old ladies are charmed by his good looks and big heart that cares about nothing but the happiness of his town and his potted green peppers.
sakura, however, gains the EXACT SAME LEVEL of popularity for entirely different reasons.
im obsessed w the idea of no. 1 badass fighter and leader of the most powerful gang in the city sakura who has everyones respect yeah sure but also. also its an olympic sport for everyone everyday to try and make him blush. umemiya had the kinda raw charisma to help lil old ladies cross the street for no reason, but with sakura the little old ladies LOVE to goad him to giving piggy back rides... if only because he acts like he hates it the whole time and then proceeds to fold and do it every single time.
LIKE IDK. theres something so funny about bofurin leader Sakura being so ready and down to fight and protect bofurin's honor 24/7 only to find that most other faction leaders would rather compete to see who can make him combust from affection first. sure yeah shishitoren loves having their monthly spars with bofurin but right now they are locked in an INSTANT DEATH deuce with roppo ichiza on who can get sakura to say the cutest most sappiest shit about the power of their friendship.
YES everyone has a healthy fear of god and would never want to actually piss off and fight sakura. YES bofurin is still the scariest group this side of the city if they really want to be. YES sakura fills out umemiyas legacy perfectly and they couldn't have chosen a better successor β BUT
its way funnier like this
βThe blooming of flowers is a symbol of hope, as they emerge from the earth to bring light and color to the world.β δΈ β
I, now, realise that Togame loves Choji and Choji loves Umemiya. And Umemiya loves plants ig
I don't get it ngl . Why would the author give every single side character some set of chapters exploring everything about their past & fleshing out everything about them & giving them centric arcs with the conflict revolving around them while Sakura" the protagonist"barely get one chapter focus on him alone/ the conflict of every arc doesn't revolve around him . Very disappointing treatment for Sakura from the author!
I would personally argue that every arc is a Sakura-centric arc, even when the conflict revolves around another character on the surface! We see Sakura almost every single chapter, and he definitely gets the most amount of panel/screen-time than any other character. I believe each arc is built around a lesson or push he needs to grow into his fullest potential as a character (this honestly might be an analysis I do at some point on my wbk blog- what important is being imparted to Sakura towards his personal growth in each arc). Each arc is him growing into a person he can be proud of, learning how to be a protector and leader of Furin and the town, and have ingrained internally that he is just as deserving of love and should be valued as much as everything and everyone else in Makochi.
We don't necessarily need to know the specific details of why he is a part of Furin because we already know that part! He's spent his whole life being rejected and treated like he is incapable of doing any good. He's always had to do things on his own and was never able to make positive connections with those around him. But the characters around him? We are told these things about Sakura pretty quickly and everything else is just filling in the gaps. However- Why does Sugishita practically worship Umemiya? Why is a pretty boy like Kiryuu a 'delinquent'/fighter? We don't know these things, nor does Sakura. A part of Sakura's personal journey in becoming a good leader or even just his personal journey in learning how make connections IS to learn about the people he is protecting/the people who are putting their support behind him. Getting to know these people's backstories IS a part of Sakura's personal growth as a character.
Every little thing we learn about Sakura's past does build up though! Maybe we don't get it all at once, but we may continue to get it throughout the rest of the series, however long it goes. We cover more than one manga chapter in a singular episode of the anime, if side characters gets one episode about their backstory that's really not that unheard of! Though I do admit that the slow and gradual reveal of small details from the main character's backstory is unconventional to most animes, there are so many other series where huge things about the main character's backstory is reveal WAY into the story (Luffy from One Piece especially comes to mind immediately, but Noragami and Clannad are other series where huge details about the main character's backstory are revealed as the story progresses).
It definitely is a preference of storytelling, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that Sakura's character is neglected by the narrative. So much of every arc has something that Sakura needs to learn, or involves a change in perspective he needs to develop further to push beyond the mindset and deeply-rooted beliefs of his (lack of) self worth that he's been left with from his past.
I rarely draw characters in somewhat detailed backgrounds, so this was definitely outta my comfort zone! Whilst it was difficult, I think adding a background created a sort of narrative to the piece? Overall, I think it turned out pretty well.
to make the mundane a memory of a lifetime for furin
(For furin trio week day 1 and day 2)
Wanted to draw them again X3 Just really love this story and these characters :D
umemiya proudly showing off sakura to everybody in japan makochi (δΊΊ^β½')ο½β
sheβs smart, sheβs protective, and she doesnβt want her little brother to know
she diverts their dadβs attention, his anger, towards her once she realized heβs literally advancing onto mitsukiβ physically and verbally
odds are their dad would see hitting his child as a way to show βtough loveβ or βshaping themβ, and judging from both reactions if this is the case itβs happened enough that neither flinch
so she brings their dadβs attention back to her, with her he seems more prone to yelling insults at herβ probably because sheβs a girl
she keeps her facade soft when talking to mitsuki, until he turns around and she faces off to where their father walked off
she does this intentionally, sheβs smart and strategic. she knows mitsuki will protect her, but she also doesnβt want him to get hurt for or because of her. so she apologizes, she acts soft and doey eyed so it doesnβt seem suspicious when she does it, to either their dad or him. dad walks off, anger ended at her, her brothers not hurt.
i just have a lot of feelings about the kiryuu siblings now, and i am ready to file them away for character examples when i have to give reports using fictional characters in psych classes (i have had to do it 3x before and itβs always kinda fun) also as an older sister who grew up in a not great home i see a lot of younger me there
THIS IS SHATTERINGβ¦. KIRYU ππππππ
Besides, it seems that Sakura notices a change in Akariβs expression after the feud with her father π€ even if I have an idea what it means, I wonβt be able to explain it better. Iβll just wait and see.
Iβm finally getting caught up on the Windbreaker mangaβ and I just!!!
heβs! adorable!!! he reminds me of a puppy!!!
what I wouldnβt do to protect this baby

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
I think Sakura would be best in street fashion! Heβs not one who coordinates outfits or super cares? But I think once some of the others force him to go shopping and help him branch out, heβs able to put together nice outfits based around hoodies and such!
I also think he gets some inspiration from Kaji, cause he looks up to him some π₯°

okay but when the class learns when sakuraβs birthday is they ask what he did for his bday before school started
and when he gets all confused cause like? heβs literally never celebrated his birthday?
and everyone is just basically heartbroken to learn that sakura has never 1. had his birthday celebrated or 2. been invited when others have celebrated their birthdays
even though itβs LATE and other birthdays are near they agree that theyβre gonna throw a sakura birthday party on the rooftop
hiragi is in charge of making sure umemiya doesnβt get so excited he foils the surprise
tsubaki is in charge of decorations
kotaha is in charge of food
suo makes sure they remember that this is sakura and he wouldnβt want a βballoons, streamers, party poppers, big blow outβ party
nirei is in charge of spreading the word without spreading the word to sakuraβ it isnβt hard but he doesnβt want to admit that
kiryuu is making a playlist that fits sakura and fits the party
justβ
everyone buying him these meaningful gifts and theyβre a bunch of teenage boys so their wrapping skills are subpar (except tsubaki and suo)
i just *clenches fist*
and imagine sakuraβs lil face when he shows up and learns what everyone did and jUST DO YOU SEE MY VISION???
please someone add to the thoughts

i love these boys
reading through the manga and wanna drop some of my fav lil expressions
thatβs all :)
spot the differenceβ level impossible
my dad and I were actually talking about this (he and I watch a lot of shows together) and he had the idea that once the kids graduate that people in the town get them jobs at their shops/businesses, even if thatβs in town or moving out, since itβs a town that takes care of themselves :)
and honestly I adore that idea
DO THESE BOYS IN FURIN ACTUALLY HAVE CLASSES?? Where are the teachers?? Are they getting an education? Do they just hang out in this abandoned school and wear school uniforms? I am worried about their future.
