Day 4: Happy Eclipse y'all 🌑 🌷

Watched Nimona a few weeks(months as of present) ago b/c Netflix put it free on YouTube and it's so fun!

The voice acting is solid. Had me about to cry twice 😭. I couldn't pinpoint everyone's voices until the end when the credits came up; but, then it clicked. Like 'why does he sound so familiar? Who is that? Oh! That's who that is! No way!' The actors and actresses did a wonderful job ☺️

The animation is so pretty and expressive. You could freeze-frame so many scenes and just stare at it. The backgrounds remind me of watercolor and the characters kinda remind me of paper.

The first escape scene reminds me of the Emperor's New Groove which is a win

(opens split screen so I can look up how to spell characters' names correctly)

I like most of the characters honestly. A lot of their motivations make sense to me in some way.

Nimona is a fun character. I like their carefree approach to stuff which is a nice contrast to Ballister and everyone else they have to face off against. It made the serious scenes more sad and it emphasizes the backstory when you realize exactly what was true about the things they told Ballister on the train. (Them talking about just letting people kill them had me tearing up 😭)

I really like Ballister. He's an underdog. And I was not ready for how this movie was going to kick off! Man JUST got his recognition from the Queen and everyone else who's been doubting him, then it gets destroyed a second later 😱 LIKE 🤬! OKAY THEN! Him and Ambrosius are cute though. On that note...

Ambrosius. I like him well enough. I like how his personal feelings for Ballister come into conflict with his job.

Sidenote: I like how it's done here. You'll see a lot of characters have this conflict but they either just met the other person; or the feelings just got reciprocated. But, since Ballister and Ambrosius are written to be already well established (they have favorite spots and know how each other likes their food) it's more impactful.

I honestly love his fake out scene. It's funny but also nice to see what he honestly thinks about everything happening between him and Ballister and the system they're a part of. Which shows how him and Ballister think alike and why they work as a couple.

But I also kinda wish two things happened in this movie:

Nimona and Ambrosius both mentioned how “cutting off limbs, isn't a love language,” and Ballister acknowledges that's how they're trained to react, but it would've been a nice 3 for 3 mention if Ballister said that when Ambrosius follows him out of the diner/bar. Just throwing it back in his face would've been so good and dramatic!

Ngl I wanted Ambrosius to lose an arm. I feel like it would've been dramatic but also kinda symbolic b/c they both lost an arm b/c of the system they were brainwashed by. Also matching disabled boyfriends!

Todd...🤬 you! No, but I thought Todd died during the final battle. Then he lived. 🤬...no, but honestly Todd was a jock douchebag but he was funny. Plus, I can give him credit for stepping toe to toe with Ambrosius b/c he believes that Ballister is a weak point for him ( which is a fair point).

The Director was terrible. Manipulative and unwilling to see reason. She was frustrating in the best way. Using the prophecy and everyone's fear of the unknown and mob mentality is solid evil. And I was happy for her downfall.

Why did I see this ad while scrolling, read the caption and see the picture; and think: ‘The smiley Magic Man of the movie. He gives the MC wisdom and appears ✨magically✨when really most needed.’

on comfort viewing and trying new things

the thing is that mental health professionals everywhere are acknowledging that most people have "comfort shows" or "comfort movies". series and films we've seen hundreds of times, probably the closest we can get to reliving a good childhood memory. it's warm, it's comforting, it's known. there is nothing unexpected around the corner -- we know the storyline well, we know how it ends.

hollywood isn't "out of ideas". it's capitalizing on this phenomenon, documented by streamers, this rise in "rewatchability" becoming more important than giving the story room to breathe. producers have always been in the business of making money above all else, and now that most of our content comes from huge media conglomerates, it's only getting worse. capitalism has long infected film and tv but it is in the process of swallowing it whole, because fewer and fewer types of movies are getting made and shown in theatres and series are getting cancelled if they don't appeal to the whole, wide world. reboots, remakes, prequels and sequels are a product of our "comfort viewing". they are repackaged tropes and worlds and characters that we know and may very well love. they are selling us something we've seen before, without the discomfort of having to tolerate something new, something uncertain, something unpredictable.

the thing is that mental health professionals also recommend we go on daily walks, or meditate, or take the time just to sit outside without a screen. we can and should indulge in our comfort movies and series -- the world is cold and harsh and we deserve to take comfort where we can. but sometimes, maybe, rewatching the same things over and over again is the media equivalent of spending the day in bed. it's warm in there, it's safe, but it's not exactly helping any of us move forward.

and sometimes it's okay to stand still. necessary, even. but on days where you do have the energy and the willpower to take yourself on a little walk, or to cook a gorgeous meal for yourself, you might want to try watching something new, too.

film and tv is supposed to entertain. yes. but it's also supposed to make us feel things, to make us understand ourselves and the people around us in different ways. it's supposed to help us process doubt, uncertainty, pain, grief, growing pains. it's supposed to show us perspectives we don't come across in our day to day lives. entertainment for the sake of entertainment doesn't always negate that, but, because we're in an age of media monopolies eerily similar to the studio era of hollywood, marketability and rewatchability are always going to be prioritized over everything else -- over the humanity of it all.

and these "alternative" shows and movies that come out -- projects like yellowjackets and the bear and everything everywhere all at once -- are only successful because people gave them a chance. people took the media equivalent of taking themselves on a walk, and they gave new media a chance.

the breakfast club would never get made today. not because of its insensitive and inappropriate jokes and tropes, but because a movie about teenagers just being teenagers simply wouldn't happen. it has no marketability, no potential for a franchise. so, that story isn't getting told. and it's not the only story getting ignored.

i could go on and on about the damage brought on by franchises and streamers, but i'll instead finish this by wishing that on days where you may have the energy to, try watching something you haven't seen before. a new series with fewer artifice and a lesser known cast; a movie about being, and the joys and pains that go with it. rent older movies at your local library, buy used DVDs from goodwill, check out MUBI or the criterion collection. your comfort show isn't going anywhere.

But also, same question. I love the fake-relationship-that-turns-real trope. It's funny, cute and dramatic, but like how do you get "fake married"? Like are the documents the never-weds sign not legally binding? Or when the authorities say "you have to prove you're actually married or you'll be fined and thrown in prison!” Like they got married for convenience/personal necessities sure; but how would the authorities actually be able to prove that? Not all couples are physically affectionate or live together.

A black girl will be spending years in jail because she had a mental health crisis. PLEASE READ

Meet Saraya: she was experiencing a mental health crisis. Police came and tackled her. She is 15.

Saraya Rees is a 15 year old biracial girl from Coos County, Oregon. After being abruptly instructed to stop taking her antidepressants by a local pediatrician, Saraya went into psychosis. In her manic state, Saraya poured a small amount of gasoline on the floor. Her parents called Coos Health & Wellness in hope that that would send mental health advisors, Coos Health & Wellness sent the police. While still in psychosis, the officers arrested her, questioned her without her family or lawyers present, charged with attempted murder and assault, and sent her to juvenile prison for 11 years.

ELEVEN.YEARS.

This is not justice.

This is inhumane.
