I work retail, and yesterday I pulled up a customer's rewards account to see his name listed as "Jim Kirk."

I said, "Cool name."

"Thanks," he said. "Want to see my ID?"

He pulled out a Star Fleet identification card with a picture of Captain Kirk on it.

"My name is Jim Kirk and I'm from Iowa," he told me. "I'm invisible online."

the thing is: lan xichen does not respect lan wangji's autonomy.

everyone always says that the twin jades is the example of the healthiest sibling relationship but it's not necessarily true. yes, lan xichen can discern lan wangji, his expressions, his feelings, he helps him in the aftermath of the first siege and wei wuxian's death. but at the end of the day he doesn't respect his choices and their consequences by laying blame on wei wuxian for his his actions and punishment.

he doesn't understand and doesn't want to understand the lan wangji did what he did not because of some kind of influence from wei wuxian or whatnot but because he wanted to do it — not only for wei wuxian but for himself as well. because he thought that was the right thing to do, because he chose to do it himself.

and lan xichen denies him these choices.

personally i do think julian bashir is trans, but not in a way that sublimates his genetic alterations into a trans allegory. i think he's disabled and trans at the same time, but i think his rebellion against his parents--the symbolic death of his old self with the name change--that's not about gender, for him, at all.

it's about the incredible violation of autonomy he experienced as a disabled person under the knife of a eugenicist society. it's about the need to reclaim some, any, of the agency that was so completely stolen from him by his parents.

it's about discovering that his entire self was deconstructed and reconstructed, without his knowledge or consent, for the express purpose of being less of a burden on his parents.

because let's not forget that the death of julian's old self was not his decision. it was his parents who killed the old self and created a new one.

let's not forget that human society in star trek is still recovering from the eugenics wars--that just because it's post-scarcity doesn't mean it's a utopia.

let's not forget the multiple episodes where bashir is forced to confront the fact that his "success story" is truthfully a gross reminder of how deeply his society (and his family) hates disabled people, not only shown in how they tried to fix him, but also in the fact that the process so rarely works as intended, yet is still done anyway--and the failures and the ones too far gone to save are locked away! with no connection to general society, and only the bare minimum provision for their physical needs, with no privacy and no autonomy!

and let's not forget that julian sees these people and is torn between the empathy he has for them, and his urge to fix them. and he goes through with this urge on Sarina, "fixing" her to conform to his idea of what she ought to be, treating her as a problem to be solved, objectifying her via "my ideal woman was trapped in this disabled body/mind and i saved her," thus continuing the cycle of violence, because even he can't conceive of a world where the disabled do not need to be fixed. where the violence done to him was wrong. fuck man

i have a billion other criticisms about star trek aos but the one thing i'll never forgive them for is taking away uhura's whimsy. tos uhura has such a bright & joyful presence she is kind and funny and artistic and cares about her looks WHILE ALSO being smart and badass and not afraid to speak her mind (especially in the movies. i love her). aos uhura is reduced to a one-dimensional #girlboss who takes no shit from anyone yet somehow lacks enough self-respect to stay in a boring & unsatisfying relationship with a man who is so obviously not attracted to women

That is because you lack the knowledge of such a culture. I am Chinese and an avid xianxia/wuxia fan and I can tell you right now you are completely and utterly INCORRECT to think WWX was in anyway wrong to visit or indeed take the man he wants to marry to present him to his once guardians tablets. Since WWX doesn't have his own parents remains to visit and JFM and YZY technically "raised" him from the age of 9... He has every right to do what he did and only those ignorant enough to ignore such formalities would say such utter crap.

I find it amusing that the very same people crying that WWX was "in the wrong" here are the same idiots who claim WWX and JC are "brothers"... Yet conveniently forget their strong opinion on this when it suits them 🤔 Of course, they weren't brothers in the slightest and the novel shows us this. But, he was taken in by the Jiang clan and JFM and YZY are technically the next best place to visit when seeking blessings for marriage, considering he's never even seen his parents ashes.

Absolutely everyone is allowed to visit an ancestral hall if they intend to show respect. Clans were integrated into the very villages they were part of and anyone could visit, so stop all this bullshit and check your history before you spread such baseless nonsense.

Can't believe this post is supporting homophobic abuse as well... Then again they even think WWX had a "choice" of leaving the clan back in his first life and don't understand what an awful ultimatum he was given between his clan and saving innocent people... Something JC should have, and was in fact honour bound to do himself...
