i actually really love drawing hands and only recently have I enjoyed it haha
I’m still not very good at it nor do I understand a single thing about anatomy but here’s some small tips I hope help!!!
tbh ive been waiting for someone to ask for a hand tutorial
I didn't have internet for a while and I couldn't look up for hand references on Pinterest so I finally made good use of my 2k + reaction pics folder on my phone 😂 | Ko-fi
WORKING TO CRACK ON THOSE ARMS…!!!!!
Doing some observing since im just sitting around… and I realised it was hard to do observing in like and thought I might as well do screenshots and draw over even on phone but problem is that while I think it might be helping me…? With trying to figure stuff… it’s not really penetrating my mind… so maybe I really need to draw smth even on pencil n paper but I don’t really want to. So I think I should do more deep mental drawing. Like taking a moment to construct the stuff in my mind like im actually drawing there… with each stroke and see how it goes… 6.39
—6.40 one thing I just realised as I was doing this is heh… wait… the torso/pec muscle are literally connected to top part of the hand… wow… it really puts a lot of this into perspective. like when I was drawing hands and trying to understand how it freaking is when drawing it just like. next to torso. it’s hard to guage how close anyways. I feel like I knew (well yeah I knew cuz lmao I wouldn’t have came to this if I didn’t) this but it’s not knowledge I keep in mind and forgot to… so that’s important… to realise. It makes the arms feel less floaty and more connected. same with remembering how arms are slanted and not perfectly in align…. 6.42
I THINK IVE GOTTEN???? ARMS????? AHHHHHH (was watching el or whatever name’s video and I was repeating it for another reason I wanted to see what brush he was using and then I think how he does part of arm got inbrained in my skull… kinda funny how I never watched it all for what I wanted (the BR muscle) )
MAN DO I WANT TO REALLY DRAW ARMS SHIT NOW… BUT I CANT BE BOTEHRED TO GO UPSTRAIS TO GET PAPER/PEN OR IPAD…. this is why I should have paper n pen downstairs to be able to draw in… I will keep this in mind for later. AHHHHHHHH ID BE SO FREAKING HAPPY IF I ACTUALLY GET IT :’ also lmao the slighting bending over ref was supposed to be for ⏳ bday art… I really want to draw him… every time I lmaooooo see that red drawing I did I want to so badly draw him…… and considering his bday is tmmr…!!!!! I WILL GET TO DRAWING HIM!!!!!!! 7.23
I have two questions! First: have you ever thought of doing a tarot card suit for your characters? I think it'd work really well for them! And two: help me how do I draw legs
@gravitality
Hi!! I’ve absolutely been thinking about that, yeah, in fact I recently talked about that to my boyfriend just recently. It’ll likely happen after october! And to answer your second question! I made a thing on legs that i hope you’ll find useful!!
So. I’ve already explained basics on legs here, but I don’t think it hurts to go through some extra details to help you understand legs some more.
The very basic thing is to imagine legs as teardrops. Again, this has already been covered in said tutorial above, but I figured it’s still good to mention even the most basic thing that I know of. I still highly recommend you check it out to get in more detail and to see some other examples and practices that you do. But basically, think of legs in the shapes of teardrops, when it comes to shape. If you need a simple stick-figure to connect the legs in the first place, make sure that they bend at the knees a bit so that the legs don’t come off as stiff and unnatural.
As you can see, this method works perfectly for realistic legs as it does for stylistic ones. Remember to use these as a guideline, never to be the exact base of the legs you will be drawing. If you draw traditionally, remember not to draw these guides too hard, or they will be hard to erase/do freestyle!
But how do you actually draw out the legs without drawing them perfectly straight, as shown to the left? The trick is to add volume to them, and how you do that can be winged to your own liking. The idea is to think in curves. As no leg is perfectly straight. You may make these curves minimal if you don’t want them to be curvy, but keep in mind, still, that not even your own bones are perfectly straight, so it is highly recommended that you make them bend, at least a little.
It all depends on how you draw them as well. Say you put your legs together, as shown in this picture, what happens to the fat and muscle? Naturally, they press together, much like how thighs squish on the surface when you sit down (I’m sure most people know what I’m talking about). Make sure this shows in your art! This is very important to keep in mind, because it makes it all look more natural and believable. Try to cross your legs or stand up and sit down again for real-life examples!
The same applies for stretching your legs, more or less, except they appear to become more ‘hollow’ and slimmer. They become less soft to the touch, too, and might show. Try stretching your legs and feel where the muscles tense and where it feels ‘hollow’. This is very helpful with your art.
Many leg tutorials talk about legs without mentioning the behind. It requires a tutorial on it’s own, in all honesty, but this is the most simplest way to draw it connecting to the legs. Remember that it comes in many different shapes, and this is just a super basic guide! Two circles overlapping, while following the line and flow of the legs. Remember the muscle/fat as mentioned above!
Okay, so we got the basics of leg shapes figured out? What if you want o draw them in a certain pose, or with a certain silhouette, but perhaps do not have the reference for it? Or you want to blend your style into it? The key is to not shy away from doodling the form. Make mess, draw lightly and don’t care about the anatomy. That way you’ll get everything down without it appearing stiff. You can clean up the sketch later, always, and if you can, use a reference after you have drawn your pose, to correct your drawing.
Remember that the hips do a lot to the pose of the legs! Make sure they are in flow with your legs, so that it can look more natural. Remembers that hips ‘rotate’ with the spine.
I’ve talked about this method before when it comes to posing, and the same applies for the legs. One way to make legs appear ‘steady’ is to picture them standing in a line, and one of those legs need not to stray from the lines too much, making it steady. If you want a dynamic pose despite the steady pose, you can always have the other leg stray from the line, since it only matters that one leg is steady. This method can create good, casual poses without making them appear boring. (also notice how the teardrop shapes are used here, despite the highly stylized legs)
Do you want a highly dynamic pose, or them to appear unsteady, then skip the line entirely and make both legs aim away from it completely. As you can see, the legs appear more moving, in action, as if they’re fighting, falling, or dancing. As you can imagine, this is not a pose that one could stay steady on, suggesting that it’s taken mid-movement. More about posing and this ‘line’ method is talked about in this tutorial.
Hope this helped you, if you have any questions let me know, and if you’d like to check out all my tutorials they can be found here!
Weird thing enjoyer found another weird thing to enjoy
Various Frankenstein doodlings. Abt half were from reference half from imagination.
Most of these are related to the Royal Ballet version which I watched a video of the other day. So good and such a wild combination. The elegant medium and the grotesque subject matter.
I also had to draw that amazing puppet version that was made for the Hamburg state opera. lil cutie he is
hehe okay so my birthsay is coming up and i JAVE AN ART GOAL!!!! i want to create an illustration for fav character or like a small….tiny…. comic for my otp 🥺 and if i cant do that ahaha id SETTLE FOR A SMALL SCENE!!!!!! abjsfdhfb im so fired up and WANT TO MAKE IT so baddd.
so like we have a month and i think i can make iy then. i tried to just generally draw somth to see my progress level, aqa where im at right now and ahahah…ahahha… yeah like i get the general gist of pose and stuff but my portions were out of wack, and i think sitting poses straight up is def not my strength and like. also djfnjdhf def male figures. and also like pelvis fcking confuses the shit out of me lmaooo. also def expressions is a big thing i need to focus on along with faces and angles… but uhhh i wanted to focus on pelvis shit more importantly and i think also the way male figures r diff… just need to draw them i really ever draw lmao girls….
the session felt good!!! i honestly have no idea if i even got to understand pelvis tilt and shit better…but i think that i got to understand….? sides that may be showing…. its still not the best but honestly i gave up at the whole box thing ahaha and i like drawimg just big shape size and then see what sides are showing by center line or like drawing general shape of pants. to see if i got like stuff from session i like to draw a scene of characters without ref but cba to go over to diff canvas and draw my faves in scenes so in the corner i drew a person lmao getting some book from bookcase. it was also good to try and draw character interacting with environment. but also i felt like that was too easy…? so i tried to draw pose in angle that i dont… and it was lol someone flopping onto their bed…. and yeah it wasnt something i wasnt used to so it wasnt good but i able to get it down. so thats a plus. also i tried to draw in bed to get in the interacting with environmemt and ahaha that was bad.
obvsly ahaha my leg stuff isnt the best at all<3 but cant be bothered at all…… right now… i am getting slightly better at understanding it thought? i think? like lmao before my legs were abysmal but like with arms. even thought im not learning them properly in isolation since i really cant. be bothered i will get to them when i will but i do try to learn it/understand it in between everything. lololol n feeet? i barely touch that. thats like farrr
anyways i wanna study the face next more properly. i def got better at drawing faces from trying to learn it a bit. but its especially my biggest weakpoint along with direction of eyes… but ehhhh i cant be bothered to properly learn it. rather tjan that, i think i like to just draw faces and then watch videos of skulls and get better understandimg. wait isnt that the same as learning. dhfbjdfb i guess for me when i think of ‘learning’ i think starting with learfning/studing first i guess.
also i need to do expressions….too… i think also whats importabt between all of this is to draw shit and see what actually i need working on while drawing scenes. but urgh problem with that is my brain is just. blank when i think to draw scenes to test my skills/see my weak points. so i guess its best to make a list already so i can refer to that. 16.28
I don't think we talk about Jopson's leg injury as much as we ought to
ahhh… I want to cry :’ today art no good… arghhhhh
9.36 20th jan (understanding + observation)
— I think what’s important with art + automaty really is the understanding. right now: getting that hands like when they bend from the palm side, yes while the knuckles part is covered my skin: what I got wrong is that it doesn’t completely disappear under the fingers but rather it folds over as they bend… also I noticed that on the back side that it’s more angular when it bends…
also observations is really super important, whether it’s just seeing how things work while you’re not writing: observation in life or through videos/picgures/comics whatever how art is done then: how how posing/anatomy works but I guess for that stuff is impotent to know what to look for like the spacing or the general angle of things. angle is a really important part.
