What I love most is how well this could work. Alice is the one that knows hypnosis and brainwashes her brother till eventually he completely believes he is The Mad Hatter. Later something happens to Alice for Jervis to start searching for another girl to continue their tea parties.
OR Alice is always chasing after him forcing him to join her tea parties and adventures, mirroring what Jervis will later do to other girls and He hates it.
Jervis doesn’t want to be apart of her deluded fantasies, but at the same time she’s still his sister and he can’t just abandon her. He partly blames himself for her being like this thinking that when they were younger he wasn’t there for her or something of the like. So what does he do? He learns hypnosis and uses it to keep her happy. He may not want to be The Mad Hatter, but he can make her imagine that he’s willing. Jervis goes out to work while Alice stays home in the delusion that there in wonderland together.
For a while this works even if Jervis always feels guilty. Of course on day the cops find out and arrest him, believing he brainwashed his little sister. To make things worse what if she still has the disease Jervis would (to everyone in the court) obviously be taking advantage of his younger sister isolating her from everyone and trapping her in some sick fantasy. Jervis is then locked away in prison while Alice is taken to Arkham where they try to convince her he brainwashed her.
Imagine if she believes it. Imagine her one day angerly visiting him in prison and accusing him of all this being so disgusted before leaving.
Jervis loses it.
He becomes The Mad Hatter, after all he’s the insane one isn’t he? He took his poor poor sister and messed with her mind. He’s the villain he was just delusional about her wanting him. He remembers how happy she was when she Alice and how disgusted she was when she wakes up so he decides “Alice” should always be kept in Wonderland.
Gotham!AU where everythings the same except Alice Tetch is the crazy one and Jervis is trying to get away from her.
“But Jervis! It isn’t a tea party without the Hatter!”
N-no! Get away from me!
“FINE! You don’t want to spend time with your sister, i’ll make you because I love you, dear brother”

…Some mental images just like smacking me in the face with a phonebook. This is one. I was listening to the latest CodotVerse audio file when it got a little wild and I had to draw what I saw. Oh, my dear deluded Jervis. Anyhoo, have a good day to all of you. :)

"Better aim."
Madeline huffed annoyed.
"I don't want perfect aim but I'd like to be able to get close."
Exasperated Madeline threw her arms in the air.
"Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is to throw a baseball and somehow get it behind you?! I am convinced some invisible fairy or witch has hexed my arms. That way everything lands the farthest away from my target! I just don't get it? Step one, look at target. Step two bend arm back. Step three throw. HOW DO I FAIL AT THAT! I swear I know how to throw! I get the concept, but why. Why am I so bad."
Fun fact!:
The hookah was actually used to smoke tobacco at the time not cannibas or other drugs! (Though I'm sure some people did) It also originated in India and was a symbol of wealth and prestige.
If anything the hookah smoking caterpillar is a symbol of change, adulthood, and a few other things (smoking being seen as an adult habit, while being a caterpillar is considered being "childlike" but him smoking could show how he's become adult like)
I could go on, on what the Caterpillar might represent but I'm feeling lazy. It's true though, don't assume the worst or immediately make Alice in wonderland an adult book about Insanity, drugs, and sex.

Unpopular opinion: yes there is a hookah in the wonderland story but that wasn’t a big deal in the era and the book itself isn’t about drug use and Lewis Carroll was not on anything at the time of writing it
Please stop directly associating it with weed, lsd, speed, etc. and thinking it makes u edgy/cool (I’m gonna get people angry about this but really it’s kids book)
