I like how MP100 fully sidesteps the "But Who Deserves Redemption?" question bc honestly it's a bad framing that gets extremely bogged down in philosophical debates about Good and Evil and who gets to make the call and becomes an awful quagmire and is also not necessary. the better questions are:
Is this person capable of change? (Answer: Yes, always.)
Are they actually going to change? (Answer: That's up to them.)
Do you want them in your life? (Answer: That's up to you.)

Two wildly different responses to the systemic dehumanization of being a soldier.
In the Separation Arc, we see Reigen tell a young Mob that is doesn't matter whether or not he has powers, all that matters is that he's a good person. This is immediately followed by our slightly older Mob returning that exact gift: telling Reigen it doesn't matter whether or not he has powers, all that matters is that he's a good person.
And they both desperately needed these assurances from each other. They saved each other from drowning in guilt and self-loathing. And they weren't wrong.
But they weren't exactly right either.
The Confession Arc exists because they both need to grow beyond that point. Confronting the fact that these things do matter—that they can't just ignore Mob's powers, or Reigen's lies. "Being a good person" does not unmake the part of yourself you wish wasn't there. Those parts of you still don't define you—that was right—but they still matter, and they still have to be faced.
Going to that next level is just... gah. This writing is so good.
[id: part of the reigen spinoff manga. first panel shows roshuuto walking while on the phone with rusty-sama attached to his body. photos of jodo and his other connections are in the background. second panel shows only his phone and says "no one else would help me. all of my personal connections were for naught." end id]

Looks like someone needs to call in "???" to school
DRIVE LINK HERE to the official mob psycho 100 fanbook!
as far as i can find, there's not been any comprehensive scans of the fanbook put up online, at least on the english-speaking internet. soooo since there's all sorts of fun stuff in it (character birthdays! character & creator q&a's! who would be most likely to survive on a desert island! guest art by other manga authors (the one in the upper left there is by the creator of FMA)!) i wanted to make sure everybody who wants to could see it!
more info under the cut. enjoy!
5x7", scanned at 300dpi in jpg format. exact pixel dimensions differ slightly due to how my scanner's auto-crop works.
the images uploaded are exactly as they were scanned, no image editing save for cropping. they could use some editing to be more presentable (levels adjustment to bring the darks down, more saturation on the color pages, & a teensy bit of rotation/adjustment) but i wanted to upload the untouched files. i might create a new drive with cleaned-up versions at some point.
i claim no ownership over these images, please feel free to do whatever you like with them, share em, edit em, and so on, no attribution necessary.
i bought my copy from hiro_shop_japan on ebay, if anybody wants to get their own.
these are obviously untranslated- some awesome folks have scanned & translated parts of the book (particularly the qnas). you can find those here! there's also a twitter thread of translated bits from 4chan, but i can't seem to find that one at the moment.
Sometimes I remember that out of everyone else in the military that we've seen, it is the depressed seemingly cynical Roy Mustang who's written as the optimist and I sed a tear
i like manga reigen's coloring because it feels more natural but anime reigen's somehow better fits his personality
Honestly both colors fit their respective personalities.
Manga!Reigen is a loooot more toned down. The bombastic antics (that he’s known for in the anime) are reserved for when he’s trying to put on a show, frustrated, or super afraid. Even his Reigen Roast ™ is tame in comparison. He looks more ugly-frustrated with the group’s inability to understand, rather than actively looking to drag them like his anime counter part.
When he’s not doing those motions, the rest of time Manga!Reig is just kind of an apathetic, depressed, regular pathetic, and average kinda guy. Which! fits one of the major themes of mob psycho 100 anyways: Congrats! You’re one of the masses just like everyone else! The brown hair and black tie fit better for this interpretation. Duller colors bring out his more mundane, pensive, wistful side.
Anime!Reigen brings out waaaaaaaaaay more of his showmanship, and this is also a fun angle! For a media based largely in visual movement, this was a great decision. Gold hair for valuing intellect (since hair is above ur brain), gray suit bc he’s morally gray bdum tss, and pink tie to show that he’s got some heart in the midst of it all. These are all very great color choices that showcase other facets of Reigen’s character.
And the anime gives him equal moments to look cool, and to look like a damn fool.
This color design is honestly more memorable and marketable as well. Plus the character designer said they gave him a pink tie since it makes him look more “shady” and I can get behind that.
Congrats this is the end of the rant! Both are good!If some of you were expecting a ‘that’s why this version is better’ conclusion I aint sorry though. They’re just two designs that emphasize different sides of the same character.
This means for my stuff where I draw somber/weighted things, Manga!Reigen’s colors fit better. But for things that are more energetic and fun, Anime!Reig’s colors are more suited.
