Thinking of Deep Space Nine as "the Dark Star Trek" without digging into what made Deep Space Nine work is so reductive. Like when people discuss Star Trek being "dark" now people bring up "DS9 was Dark and you loved that! Trekkies would hate it now!"

Deep Space Nine didn't work bc it was Dark and it wasn't Dark out of nowhere. Deep Space Nine is intimately tied to TNG in a way no other series is with another (Voyager could've been just as rooted in DS9, but. Y'know. Wasn't). Not only in characters, but that the show is so devoted to exploring deep cuts from TNG: the Bajorans, but also the Ferengi, long dismissed as failed villains, and the Trill, one-off aliens-of-the-week who DS9's writers turned into one of Trek's major species. The central thesis of DS9 isn't that the Trek Universe Is Fucked Up Actually. It's that things get more messy and complicated when Starfleet has to stick around and not dash off to another planet at the end of the episode

DS9 is darker than other Treks, yes, but DS9 is also the warmest, with the most grounded, human characters, not in spite of the fact that two-thirds of the cast are aliens but because of it. The writers treat alien characters as not representatives, but individuals. They treat everyone as individuals, with foibles and flaws, not as perfect, straitlaced future people. DS9's dark episodes are darker than other Treks, but also it's more willing to get silly and emotional. Only DS9 could do the "Sisko confesses to a conspiracy to get the Romulans in the war" episode, but also only DS9 could do the "a holographic lounge singer tries to get Odo and Kira together" episode right after it. Boiling the entire series down to "Deep Space Nine was the Dark Star Trek! Grimdark!" is...just not it

A seven panel comic of the name carving scene between Kirk + Spock and Mariner + Boimler.

In the first panel Spock, a fair-skinned man with pointed ears in a blue uniform, says to Kirk, a blond, tan-skinned man in a green uniform, "I fail to see the logic in defiling a perfectly good table." Kirk is carving their names into the bar table.

In the second panel, Kirk responds while smiling up at Spock, "It's an old human custom."

In the third panel we cut to a couple hundred years in the future where Beckett Mariner, a Black woman in a ponytail and dirty white uniform, is carving her and Boimler's name next to where Kirk and Spock's names are. The caption reads in Kirk's voice, "Two people will carve their names into a tree or a bridge or some sort of wood as a gesture of love." In the corner, Spock asks, "Love, Captain?"

In the fourth panel, Mariner has her arm around Boimler, a white man with purple hair in a dirty white uniform, while they are both smiling. The caption reads, "Love, friendship, romance."

In the fifth panel, the two ensigns are sitting together looking happily at their carved names next to Kirk and Spock's. The caption reads, "The carving would signify their lasting affection. Someone could come along years later, and even though those two people may be long gone, a mark of their love would still exist."

In the sixth panel it's the 2260s again. Spock says to Kirk, "Quite a romantic concept." with a quirked eyebrow. Kirk is smiling.

In the seventh panel, we see Kirk and Spock with their back towards the viewer. Spock has his arms folded behind his back while Kirk says, "Indulge me, Mr. Spock."

Two years ago, the first episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks had aired, and the world was introduced to the charming bunch of plucky ensigns of the USS Cerritos.

To celebrate this occasion and the upcoming crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, here's a little comic—based on a script by CEO of Star Trek and a sketch I made, brought to life by the amazing talent of @serial02721—that revisits one of the show's most iconic scenes. We'd like to thank Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid for the work they put into their characters, Mike McMahan for being the creative mind behind the show, Dave Ihlenfeld for writing this beautiful scene, and the rest of the cast and crew for giving us this awesome cartoon!

The fact that there’s a third guy with them makes even more obvious that Kirk and Spock are staying so unnecessarily close to each other lol

Remember that episode of Voyager where the entire crew was basically begging Janeway to sleep with the hot holodeck 1800s Irish villager and she was like “noo o ooo  I couldn’t possibly !” and they were just like “PLEASE captain you’re SO horny PLEASe.”

Boldly going

Star Trek! The original series, the next generation, voyager, deep space 9, lower decks, and strange new worlds. Hopefully I'll get around to the others some day. Sometimes I'll post something else. Let's build a world we can be proud of!
