Calls for Justice for Aurora’s Violinist Elijah McClain Grow
Elijah McClain was a kind and gentle 23 year old who worked as a massage therapist in Aurora, CO. On his lunch breaks from work, Elijah would go to the animal shelters and play violin for the animals because he thought that they were lonely in their cages and thought that the music would calm them.
In August 2019, Elijah went to the gas station to buy some iced tea for himself and his cousins. Because he suffered from anemia he would often wear a ski/ runner mask over his face to stay warm. On his way home, the Aurora Police department were called to reports of a “suspicious man.”
(Warning: for violent description) Elijah was apprehended by a group of three cops, despite committing NO crime and being unarmed. A struggle occurred, and he was held in a very dangerous carotid hold around his neck while he cried for help, cried out that he couldn’t breathe, cried out that he was nonviolent and couldn’t even kill a fly, and was repeatedly throwing up. Elijah weighed a mere 140 pounds. You can hear on the audio footage, an officer instructing another to move their body camera out of view.
While 3 Aurora Police Dept officers violently restrained him they called Aurora Fire Dept, who injected him with ketamine (a powerful drug used to tranquilize horses or in surgeries by a trained anesthesiologist and illegal to be administered by anyone else) even though he was already cuffed and calm.
He went into cardiac arrest , slipped into a coma, and his family was advised to take him off life support 6 days later.
The cops were transferred to another department but never received charges.
Especially call these numbers:
Call CO Governor Jared Polis (303) 866 2471
Call Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman (303) 739 7015
Call District Attorney Dave Young (303) 659 7720

Women Self Defense in 1947
I love it when Elrond is portrayed as someone who is a little bit incomprehensible to most of the elves at first. Not even just because he's a half-elf, but because he reminds them all of so many other people, and that layering can be kind of jarring.
He sings beautifully, with a voice that sounds like no elf or man, and it reminds many of the Sindar of Luthien. It reminds some of the Noldor of someone else, another singer with raven-dark hair and starry gray eyes.
The braids he does his hair in– and he always keeps it braided at first, because letting it run loose is another thing that makes people whisper of Luthien– are in the traditional Noldor style. The survivors of Gondolin love that; Turgon always wore his hair in classical styles too. The other part of the House of Finwe that clung to traditional braids goes unmentioned. But everyone knows.
And he was clearly taught about court manners; taught to be gracious and charming, and a very good listener. The elf who could have taught Elrond those things is usually skipped over entirely, in favor of those reminiscing about Idril's graceful poise or Melian's endless patience.
He looks very much like Luthien, but there is a particular Finwean sharpness in his facial structure; something that makes him look a lot like Fingolfin, as well. Fingolfin looked very much like his father. And his older brother.
His smile is just like Earendil's (whose smile is just like Tuor's), and his strange, birdlike laugh is from Elwing. He fights and writes with his left hand– but then, so did Earendil, because while all elves are right-handed, not all humans or half-elves are. He eats no meat– just like Beren, they say, but the way Elrond tells it the choice had nothing to do with that history. There is ainuric power in him and something very human in the set of his shoulders. The flowers grow around any place he stays long enough. He gets sick in a way no elf, and certainly no maia, ever would. His accent is odd, and archaic, and changes noticeably when he's too tired to obscure it. His mannerisms are a mixture of about twelve people, almost all of whom are dead, and several of whom are not spoken of by the time he shows up in Gil-Galad's camp.
And the reflections of Elrond unsettle a lot of people; because one moment they see a fallen hero or loved one, and the next they see the person that took them. Or perhaps someone else, that they never knew at all. There is reverence and fear and uncertainty. It's messy.
Elrond himself is coming to peace with this by the War of Wrath. There is love in carrying the parts of your ancestors with you, even when they aren't around any more. And he knows better than anyone that he is always himself, first and foremost. Still, it takes everyone else a while to stop seeing a ghost and start seeing Elrond.
This list was supposed to be a part of a very simple round-up but then I got stuck on a plane with some time to kill and decided to expand it with a commentary. It's the festive season after all, let's spread gratitude. I limited myself to 10 pieces, each by a different author in no particular order.
#1 Asian Honorifics & BL - a quick & dirty guide, with examples by @absolutebl
After the revelation of December '22 that brought me here, I spent the better part of January educating myself on Asian BLs. Honestly, where better to start than this master post. In particular, I want to mention the Asian honorifics guide, without which I would be so so lost. Thanks for maintaining the BL syllabus P'ABL!
#2 BL and it’s Shoujo grandma by @nieves-de-sugui
Now digging deeper, this piece along with any follow-ups like A Quick History of BL is straight-up fascinating. I am quite familiar with the evolution of genres in music but never knew how literary genres are building off each other. And it all has been happening not so long ago!
#3 The Eighth Sense and Missing Pieces by @ranchthoughts
Oh, the times when T8S was airing were wild. The post Ranch wrote seems almost academic and I love it for that. Apart from the obvious logical arguments on the topic, it encapsulates the joy of collective experience where everyone can chime in. Every voice and take is valid and you can source your friends like a reputable scientific magazine - now that's just too cool.
#4 This isn't about Wang by @respectthepetty
We all know and love the author for colour analysis but my favourite of RTP's posts is the 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us meta. After watching the series, I desperately needed someone to unpack it for me. It was such a blessing to have those key moments and analogies broken down and explained in words. I yelled yass! after every paragraph. I do not want to go into details (spoilers!), but the bridge metaphor is still fresh in my mind.
#5 Turtles Catches Up With Old GMMTV: I Told Sunset About You (ITSAY) Edition by @waitmyturtles
If there was a Spotify wrapped but for reading meta Turtles would be my number one artist, that's for sure. And I still haven't read half of the stuff she made for the GMMTV challenge. The sheer amount of words she produces is shocking. How does she write so much? so cleverly? while being so busy? The ITSAY piece gave me so much context on Phuket's communities, their history and the setting in which the story is told. It enriched my experience twofold.
#6 The Knowing: Being Queer in BL by @bengiyo
Now this one, this one is very precious to me. After reading the piece and looking through the collection of characters presented there I realised that I've always been drawn to the characters that experience the Knowing. Or at least since I watched C.R.A.Z.Y. all those (16!) years ago. The need to fit in but feeling distinctly different was always something I empathised with a lot. Maybe that's actually why queer stories tend to move me so much. So thank you Ben for my 'oh' moment.
#7 Moonlight Chicken is For the Queers by @wen-kexing-apologist
MLC is my favourite series of this year for various more or less objective reasons and one of them is tackled in this text. No other trope in any drama gets me more than found family / friendship group that suffers together through thick and thin. The way WKX presents these themes through a queer and very personal lens is deeply moving, and honestly, a privilege to read.
#8 To My Star - Music by @iguessitsjustme
I have a thing for music in general, and above all else, I love discovering new songs and genres. And if it's through dramas? Even better. But I could never dissect the whole soundtrack the way Rae does. Everything clicked when I read the post on To My Star music. It was delightful to revisit the series and catch all the references with a new set of ears, so to speak. I also recommend the Old Fashion Cupcake analysis which was the final push for me to watch the show.
#9 10 Things I Love About 3 Will Be Free by @lurkingshan
I would watch an absolute garbage of a series if Shan pitched it to me. I love it when she writes in the list/short paragraphs format, where each part has excellently laid out arguments. It's always such an easy and insightful read! The piece mentioned sold me on 3 Will Be Free and I am VERY grateful. My second fav out of Shan's pitches would be this kdrama recommendation list because she made it based on my parameters *blush*.
#10 The Biting Spectrum: Ranking QL Chomps from Cute to Sexy to Feral by @sorry-bonebag & Office BLs Ranked by Their Ability to Maintain the Veneer of Appropriate Workplace Behaviour by @itsanidiom
Ok, so most of the posts mentioned before were on a serious note so let's finish up with something that just made me cry with laughter. Both of these rankings are the only ones that matter this year. I love how half of fandom content is essays on important topics and the other half is just unhinged analysis, wild theories and snarky comments ♡
Obviously, what I mentioned is only a small and very biased sample so I want to reiterate - big thanks to all the writers out there for giving me so much to read and think about. You made my year better!
“Congratulations on ending your seclusion , Zewu Jun”, Jin Ling bowed to the older man before turning to the other jade present. “And congratulations to you too , Hanguang Jun. For the first month celebratory of your son ,the proper heir of Lan Sect. May prosperity and blessings given to both you and your wife” his voice couldn’t help but to waver , eyes intense watching the man and his wife. “My uncle sends his congratulatory and apologises that he couldn’t attend your wedding and the first month celebratory. He is preoccupied with the Sect,” he bowed again.
Everyone in the hall present knows that that was a lie. Sect Leader Jiang didn’t attend to celebrate because Hanguang Jun divorced , abandoned and humiliate the Sandu Shengshou’s older brother. Jin Ling did not want to attend, but he intends to visit Wei WuXian in Gusu without causing an uproar due to his status of the only Jin Sect Leader. Jiang Cheng had contacted WeiWuXian after he heard of the divorce and invited him to stay in Lotus Pier, but Wei Ying insisted on staying in Gusu and promised to send letters.
“I love him too much to leave, Jiang Cheng ! As long as I could see him ,though I’m not by his side anymore and he is with his new wife, I’ll still be the happiest man alive! Until I’m ready to leave, I will stay to disturb the young disciples hahaha !” Jiang Cheng respects his wishes albeit reluctantly. But after the news of the birth of a Lan Sect Heir circulating in the cultivation world, Wei WuXian stopped sending Jiang Cheng letters. Worried , he send JinLing to attend and visit Wei WuXian, as he knew that if he were to attend this day, he won’t be able to hold back and attack Lan Wangji in rage and drag his brother home. Jin Ling attended in his uncle’s stead and came across Jingyi , Shizui and a few Lan disciples in Caiyi who just came back from a long term mission sent by the Elders. Joining the group, they went to Cloud Recesses together to attend the celebration.
Jin Ling eyes scanned the crowd in the hall but couldn’t see his uncle. “Sizhui ! Do you see my uncle?” “No, I think he is in the quarters. I’ll ask GrandMaster for permission to leave.” Jin Ling nodded and followed Sizhui.
“Grandmaster ,these disciples and Young Master Jin would like permission to leave the banquet and visit Wei Qianbei. Is he in the disciples quarter?” asked Lan Sizhui with propriety of a GusuLan Sect. “You have my permission, bring along some food from this banquet. That rascal had the nerve to not join this occasion. He’s not in the quarters, he has been transferred to a room near Mingshi at the Back Mountain.” “EH? that far !?” exclaimed LanJingyi. “I haven’t see Young Master Wei since I came out of my seclusion. I will visit him after the banquet ends.” said Lan Xichen. The 3 disciples nodded and leave the hall.
“When Jingyi complained just now ,never had I thought that it was not exaggerated. How far is that place again ?!” panted JinLing. “Hey! what do you mean exaggerated ? Don’t tell me you’re tired young mistress?” “Why you-!” “We have arrived , stop fighting both of you” reprimand Sizhui to the both scowling teenagers.
Sizhui was holding a tray of food with chilli spice having familiar with Wei Wuxian’s favorable of spicy food. As they reached the destination ,shocked was an understatement for them when judging the condition of the house. “Are you sure this is the place? This looked abandoned,” asked JinLing. “Just like him”, a silent voice whispering. Entering the yard, a foul smell permeated from the house. “Wha-?!” dropping the tray , Sizhui ran and open the door before a strong rotting smell assaulted his nose. Eyes watering ,he uses his robe to cover his nose and enter the house, ignoring the background where the sound of Jingyi gagging on the bush and JinLing swears profanities that sure will cause Grandmaster Qiren to spit blood.
JinLing followed to ran inside and almost collided with Sizhui. His friend was standing very rigidly ,hands clenched to his sides and his face was very pale white. He looked at him and followed his gaze and looked upon a sad scene. One sadder than what he anticipated.
A body (rotting body) slumped on a table ,one hand holding a brush and another on a painting of that man (the one who abandoned him). A cloth? A robe ? Too thin for this cold weather. The house empty of furnitures except for a bed and a table. WHAT HAS THIS SECT DONE TO HIM??
JinLing dropped on knees ,too shocked react. His ears were ringing , or was that the sound of Sizhui screaming ?
He remained on the ground as he witnessed his friend crying and hugging the corpse .
He remained on the ground as Sizhui wailed and apologises to ‘Xian-gege’ and for leaving too long.
He remained on the ground as Jingyi told him he’ll be back to bring the Sect Leader here.
He remained on the ground as Lan Qiren, Lan Xichen , LanWangji and the Elders arrived .
He remained on the ground as he watched Sizhui went hysterical on the approaching Elders.
But he stood up and fought back when Lan Wangji approached Sizhui and the body. Anger flaring at the man.
Grabbing the pristine robe of the honourable Second Twin Jade , although the older man’s height makes it awkward in a way.
“DON’T TOUCH HIM !!!! YOU HAVE LOST THE RIGHTS TO DO SO ! YOU ABANDONED HIM !!! YOU HUMILIATE HIM WHEN YOU REMARRIED TO A SO CALLED PROPER WIFE. YOU LEFT HIM TO DIE ALONE. YOU LEFT HIM TO ROT HERE AND THE LAST THING HE THINKS ON HIS LAST DYING BREATH IS STILL YOU!” that man grabs his hand but has no intention to fight back.
“I’m sor-”
“DO NOT APOLOGIZE !!! DO NOT CRY AND DO NOT CALL HIS NAME!! THE ONE WHO YOU SHOULD APOLOGIZE IS DEAD !! AND HE’S BEEN GONE FOR MORE THAN 2 WEEKS THAT THE BODY IS IN THAT CONDITION. YOUR SO CALLED RIGHTEOUS CLAN HAS PUSHED HIM TO HIS LIMIT & TO HIS DEMISE!! YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS TO CRY AND MOURN FOR HIM , GO TO HELL !!!!” and he pushed that man away.
JinLing couldn’t remember much after his outburst. He remembered crying beside the passed out Sizhui’s bedside until Jiang Cheng arrived.
He remembered seeing his jiujiu’s bloodshot eyes and bloodied knuckles as he hugged him. He remembered wailing like a new born baby in his jiujiu’s arms. He remembered escorted by the Jiang disciples , all with mourning white robes ,Sizhui in tow and his Gusu Lan’s forehead ribbon absent. He remembered arriving in Lotus Pier with a box containing the ashes of Wei Wuxian in his uncle’s arm.
He mostly remembered his uncle spoke with a cracked voice , “It’s late , but welcome home , A-Xian.”

It’s interesting how diseases rip through schools at incredible speeds despite being in an arguably modern, clean(ish) environment. I wonder if it has something to do with the whole “you need a doctor’s note to excuse your absence of even one day” combined with the average price of going to a doctor, the lack of education on things like “you’re still contagious even after the fever goes away”, and the overwhelming message of “if you don’t struggle through it, you’re a failure!”
I need to draw men being obnoxious to their partners and getting In The Way right now immediately.
BEWARE: Here is the land of Asian BL/GL dramas with a spattering of Western shows!
