The pre-Christian Norse spiritual worldview is animistic, which means that it's informed by direct experiences and observations of nature, interpreted through the lens of human experience and feelings. You know how we watch snow swirl around think that it looks playful, or watch a wildfire and think that it looks angry? It involves that kind of thing.

But when most people think of pre-Christian religions, they tend to imagine later forms of Greek and Roman polytheism. The problem here is that these Greeks and Romans had begun to think of divinity in more abstract, transcendent ways, and had begun to imagine the gods as rulers of things rather than the spirits of things.

Loki isn't the lord of mischief, he's the spirit of mischief. He's in the little voice telling you make that shitpost and to stop caring about being "cringe." He's in your cat's impulse to knock something off the counter to watch it bounce or roll. Loki manifests in every accidental innuendo and hilarious typo, in every spilled cup of coffee, and every paperwork mix-up. (This is why he's a shapeshifter! He can be anything!)

So when media depicts a Loki riddled with repression and shame - say, for example, a Loki who sneers at modern media or the culture of the common folk - it's depicting a Loki who can't really Loki. That poor spirit has been bound and gagged.

Certain popular media has depicted Thor and Loki as some kinds of opposites, but when we consider the animist perspective we can see there is a serious problem with this. Loki and Thor being depicted as companions isn't some random whim; it's a reflection of the reality that thunderstorms bring chaos.

A Loki informed by Norse mythology shouldn't be complaining about Thor's "oafishness" or whatever, he should be encouraging him to wreak even more havoc. Loki shouldn't be here out of some real or imagined obligation, he should be here because he expects he's going to have a pretty good time, and because he hopes to make the situation as ridiculous as possible.

Loki being the spirit of mischief is also why depicting him as hostile to humanity isn't really in the spirit of the pre-Christian Norse worldview. Mischief and chaos are not anti-human; they're just realities of the world that humans inhabit. I get how it's easy to infer that Loki must have something against humans due to his oppositional role toward the Aesir in the Ragnarok story, but that's an extremely Christian reading of the narrative. The story is simply describing the collapse of civilization and end of the world as we know it through Norse animistic comprehension. Loki only has an issue with the Aesir, who bound him in a cave to be tortured with serpent venom. Humanity is neither here nor there for him.

Farewell, Wanderlust is such a perfect song for the character

3, 43, and 50 for whichever version of Loki is your favorite?

I'm not shy about Blood Brothers Loki being my fave Marvel!Loki (and only second to my idea of myth!Loki), but as my last ask was very thorough on old comics!Loki and included Blood Brothers, I'll pick another one.

Also, is it Marvel!Loki or any? I'll pick two that were formative to me and aren't as conceptual as "my idea of myth!Loki": MCU!Loki and Alan Cumming's Loki in Son of the Mask. They're not necessarily the best or accurate to the myths, but they were formative to me. I don't know how to explain it but they do have a similar vibe despite the different tones of their movies. Their characterizations are not mutually exclusive.

3. What first drew you to this character?

SOTM!Loki: He was the first Loki I ever encountered and introduced my monotheistic Catholic child brain to the idea of an imperfect deity. I'm an Atheist, but in a way, he helped me. I was always freaking out over going to hell for thoughts I had, or lies I told, or things I broke by accident. To find out there was a god of pranks and lies was very neat to me. The idea a deity out there wouldn't condemn me over lies and was as imperfect as me was appealing and interesting to a child that broke everything.

It was a new concept to me, because I only knew a god to be a perfect being. And Christian-influenced portrayals of patriarch deities such as Disney's Hercules, tended to code Zeus as "good" and Hades as some sort of Devil figure in a sort of hellish underworld. So they didn't challenge my idea of a god (i.e. the idea that Hades was also a god did not register to me; plus the plot kinda went over my head cus I didn't have a good grasp of language yet). Also, he dresses like a 2000s mall goth!!!

3, 43, And 50 For Whichever Version Of Loki Is Your Favorite?

MCU!Loki: His paranoia in Thor (2011). I am a very paranoid person who has a bunch of unhealthy habits such as eavesdropping because I want to have a plan, if someone's going to act against me. I also associate him with someone I was infatuated with that I consider my first real friend.

3, 43, And 50 For Whichever Version Of Loki Is Your Favorite?

My version of myth!Loki is more of a concept that lives in my head rent-free because I found Loki hilarious in the mythology.

43. What type of weather makes you think of this character?

MCU!Loki: A cold winter night.

SOTM!Loki: A hot Summer day.

My version of myth!Loki: Windy day. People sleep on the wind association too much for my taste. And I know they're not a wind deity. But the eating contest between Loki and Logi is about the association of the air that keeps the hearth burning. The windy weather also applies to the current iteration comics!Loki/Ikol, as they've tried getting closer to the myths. I think talking about my interest in the current comics!Loki wouldn't be very interesting because I got into Loki a few years before they existed. So if I know them know it was due to four other pre-existing Lokis (i.e. SOTM, MCU, OG Marvel Loki, and myth!Loki)

50. Link your fav song, playlist, aesthetic board, fan-fiction, reference pile, personal artwork, analysis post, meme, headcanon, or quote for this character. Whichever one (s) you are most comfortable with!

MCU!Loki: You and Not Me-Devour the Day from my MCU!Loki playlist.

My version of myth!Loki: The Jester-Badflower also from my MCU!Loki playlist.

SOTM!Loki: Slept So Long by Korn because he's this ancient being invoked into action by his mask falling into mortal hands at Odin's behest. It's also such a 2000s mall goth edgelord song and he's such a mall goth.

Also I'll give some songs for stories deity comics!Loki/Skald!Loki because I have those at hand and I like recommending songs:

Farewell, Wanderlust-The Amazing Devil

New Low-Middle Class Rut

Trust Me from The Devil's Carnival (fun musical) fits a lot of Lokis. I'm surprised I haven't seen many edits to this song lol.

while this is an absolutely great take on this issue, and i completely understand you frustration with the showrunners for royally screwing up our favorite character (as we probably all do on this side of the fandom), i would like to quickly remind the class of that time tom mentioned in an interview that he only had ~5% input in the series despite being an executive producer who should've had much more power (i really wish that i was able to find the picture of it that i had found as a source but i've somehow lost it in my files).

i personally cannot find it in myself to blame him for the destruction of his character because he has shown in multiple instances how much he cares about loki and his story (see his knowledge of loki in the comics as well as his understanding of norse mythology, especially compared to the rest of the cast in the thor movies alone). all of the issues that have occurred after 2013 usually can be directly connected back to the writers fundementally misunderstanding (or just not giving a fuck about) loki, or the director changing things last minute to make him look bad - as op said above about nerfing and deleting crucial scenes for his character, even since the very first movie.

as i previously said, your feelings on the matter are completely valid, and i respect your opinion. however, based on the information that i have as a fan (because we will likely never know about all of the decisions that went into this), it is unfair to be blaming tom for decisions that were originally out of his hands, or even ones that were taken away from him.

EDIT: I FOUND THE PICTURE GUYS

While This Is An Absolutely Great Take On This Issue, And I Completely Understand You Frustration With

Any time I see someone say "Marvel knew what they were doing when they cast Tom Hiddleston" I feel a bit like...they didn't though? I think you're projecting some 4D chess grandmaster stuff onto Marvel Studios that doesn't really exist.

Tom was cast via Kenneth Branagh and yes it was PHENOMENAL casting but let's not pretend like Marvel Studios didn't spend the next near-decade and a half deleting Loki's scenes, killing him then instantly reviving him, deleting yet more of his scenes, killing him again, retconning killing him, sticking him off-screen for almost half a decade, removing yet another scene and not even compensating his fans with a DVD extra, killing him again, then suddenly remembering he's popular (again) and coming up with something to use a now-for-real-dead character as the lead but it wasn't exactly the same character (just another version of him) and now they're apparently done with him again when it's pretty obvious he'll be wheeled out of that tree at some point.

I love Loki. I love Tom's portrayal of Loki but the only people who have consistently genuinely seemed to care about the character are the fans. Because we've been given nothing but crumbs by Marvel and yet produce all this beautiful fan art, fan fic and meta. Marvel have just kinda stumbled around Loki like some perpetually confused pigeon in a hall of mirrors that keeps crashing into its own reflection shrugging "huh...what IS this? Ooh shiny!"

Knew what they were doing? More like lucked out with a very talented and charismatic actor and a dedicated fanbase that formed 2011-12 and is somehow, despite everything still here.

think about it this way: if love=sex, that means you would probably have to fuck your partners, your parents, your siblings, your pets, your friends, your cousins, your grandaparents, your aunts/uncles, your nieces/nephews, YOUR CHILDREN, etc.

Love without Sex

I’m doing a Philosophy paper on Asexuality. Please reblog if you think Love without Sex is possible! I really need the data. Like if you think love has to have sex.

super late to the party here, but honestly all i wanted out of the loki series was at least neutral rep for genderfluidity/bisexualtiy for loki, maybe have sigyn make an appearance, and learn more about loki's time with thanos/in the void. the only thing on this list i got was loki's sex being "fluid", and the mention of bisexuality that is undermined in the same episode its introduced by having loki fall in love with sylvie

this is obviously not to say that opposite sex relationships can't happen, but i feel as if it continues the false belief from biphobic people that bisexuals just "havent found the right person yet," usually in relation to the opposite gender rather than a same-sex pairing. once i knew sigyn wasnt gonna be introduced and his bi orientation was confirmed, i was really looking forward to him having an mlm pairing, but instead, he got pushed with sylvie

I Intentionally Start Shit in the Loki Tag

If you complain about Sylvie being "harmful queer rep" BUT want "Lady Loki" in the MCU, which was Loki possessing Sif's body just to torment Sif, I need you to sit down and shut up. a. Genderfluid people don't go by "Lady " when they're femme or women. b. If you don't see the transphobic dogwhistles in the comics possession subplot, I don't know what to tell you... But let's say that hag that wrote those crappy books would love it. c. If you weren't aware about this, maybe you should read the wiki at least before giving uninformed opinions.

I definitely agree that they should not have led people on with the promise of genderfluid rep during the promotion of the series. But get mad at Disney/Marvel for that. Not at the writers or Sophia Di Martino that had to cave in to Feige's demands. That's literally what they have to do.

I really don't give a damn about the "autogynephilia" allegations, which again, is ALSO PRESENT IN CIS WOMEN. Like why the fuck should I care about someone finding themselves hot? There's fascists out there. AGP even if it was a trans-specific thing harms no one. The only harm said to come from it is DUE TO FASCISM because it plays into RESPECTABILITY POLITICS.

If you use AI to create a "proper" Lady Loki or love interest for Loki, you can't complain about the blatant product placement in S2. I am not a fan of product placement either and won't defend it, but those are the rules. Show some integrity. And before you ask, I have not given a cent to Disney since they pissed me off with attempts to trademark Dia de los Muertos for Coco.

If you complain about how being a "Loki" is not a role (unlike Spiderman) and how it should have been all 100% Tom Hiddleston, you don't get to call it selfcest as a gotcha, because you're already differentiating between the variants with different DNA. Like do y'all hate selfcest or not? Make up your mind. The series treats a Loki as an archetype of sorts, so it can be a role. Also, having the same name does not make you related because we don't know what Sylvie's parents are? And we don't even know if Sylvie is also a Jotun, a prop claims she isn't.

If you say you want Sylvie dead but claim to not be misogynistic, because you'd love if a specific love interest from the comics or mythology replaced her, STFU. You only like those because you can project whatever the fuck you want onto them.

If you claim Sylvie is a misogynistic depiction of women but salivate over characters written by cishet white men in the 1960s-1980s that made wanting to fuck Thor or being in a monogamous marriage with Loki their entire personality (there's so MANY OF THESE), STFU. Do you hear yourself? And no, it's not misogynistic of me, a woman, to criticize offensive depictions of women by cishet white men. They're not real.

Our MCU!Loki is not the young adult Ikol reincarnation currently. Of course 20-something Verity is not going to be there! The Loki show should be praise for having multiple female cast members around the same age as the protagonist and pragmatic clothing choices that allowed SdM to nurse her baby.

Selfcest isn't real and I cry tears of boredom whenever someone clutches their pearls over it.

The comics aren't perfect. As much as I loved the recent Dan Watters run (and German Peralta's art), the comics art has some very questionable tendencies, especially regarding Loki's nose when she's femme. It's associated with how some kinds of facial features are considered masculine or feminine (and racialized). Noses have no gender, ffs! Women with nose bumps exist! For some reason Loki always has a tiny button nose when she's a woman or femme. There's also the BLATANT physiognomy that has ALWAYS PLAGUED Thor comics since their inception, and Loki's facial features as they've become more "grey" and less evil is an interesting study. Peralta's far from being the only artist with this problem, and is far from being the most problematic. For comparison from Loki (2023) run:
