Khiluk Now That The Snow And Ice Have Melted And The Summer Season Is Smiling On The Boreal Regions Of

Khiluk Now that the snow and ice have melted and the summer season is smiling on the boreal regions of the world, Spotted Lake in Canada is having its strange annual transformation. Most of the year it looks like a normal endorheic lake, without an outlet and the focus point of the local drainage system. Such lakes are often alkaline, and concentrate dissolved minerals from the surrounding catchment area. As summer warms the north, the water gradually evaporates, leaving craters full of mineralised water and evaporation crusts that have been sacred to the First Peoples and used for therapeutic purposes since time immemorial. The craters change hue as the evaporation proceeds, and diverse mixes of sulphates and phosphates interact producing a series of unique mixtures. There are 365 separate pools, and to the indigenous Okanagan Nation. each one has its unique medicinal power. The lake was acquired for the Nation in 2001 and is now protected.
