Imagine 100 pages of a beauty and fashion magazine only showcase average-looking women like those random girls you see every day on your way to the office, would you be more interested in that *beauty and fashion* magazine? Some critic but they may forget humans have fantasy and are inspired by ideal selves. Every now and then we enjoy unrealistic things. The publishers just offer the mainstream what the mainstream want. Consumers have freedom of choice.
Some blame the industry for manipulating standards of beauty for women. This may be but "standards" change over time and lots of factors rather than just beauty and fashion industry contribute to forming such standards. Do you think with his proposed "ideal proportions" of human body (easily seen in the statue of Venus de Milo) Leonardo was also manipulating the standards of beauty for women?
