Something About Everything Neil Gaiman Has Ever Done Feels Like The Root Of A Broken Tooth. Sometimes

something about everything neil gaiman has ever done feels like the root of a broken tooth. sometimes it’s this sort of jarring delight: it’s being six and shoving the tip of your tongue into the hole where your tooth was and tasting the metal of your own pink, enflamed flesh. sometimes it’s viscerally horrific: it’s shattered bits of bone embedded deep in an exposed nerve that you didn’t even really believe you had until just now. sometimes it’s indescribable but somehow universally acknowledged: it’s the taste of your own mouth and knowing something only by feel and the exposure of the parts of you that weren’t ever supposed to know air. the situation adapts, the formats change, the experience shifts, but the core experience of it is always the same

about adhd

it concerns me that people really don’t know that adhd isn’t a personality type or behavioral problem.

adhd isn’t someone who’s personality is driven by fun and disorder.

adhd is someone who’s brain goes all over the place looking for dopamine, because it doesn’t make or register enough of it, and when it finds a source of dopamine, it hyperfixates on it. it’s about deregulation of attention as well as emotions.

it’s not a person who can’t behave. a person with adhd can look like a lot of things. misconceptions about what adhd looks like kept me from even looking for a diagnosis, and it also kept myself and others (professionals, even) from taking my suspicions seriously.

everyone’s encouraged to reblog, but if you don’t have adhd, keep your additions to the tags.

How many arms do starfish have? If you said ‘five,’ you’re wrong.

New research in the journal Nature helps unlock a mystery on why sea stars have their star shape. But another mystery remains.

Focusing on genes known to be associated with the head, torso and tail in other animals, the team discovered that sea stars are composed of cells that are, genetically speaking, almost entirely head.

As Thurston Lacalli from the University of Victoria in Canada put it in an accompanying perspective piece in Nature, the sea star is like a “disembodied head walking about the sea floor on its lips.”

thanks so much to Thurston Lacalli from the University of Victoria in Canada for ruining my fucking night!

I don’t get how in fantasy fiction, the women who actually enjoy sewing/embroidering are always painted as the weak, boring, and anti-feminist characters

Sewing and embroidery take skill, patience, and artistic talent and it was also the ultimate way to ignore the annoying men in your life in past centuries

If you didn’t feel like talking to a man, you just “took up your sewing” and he’d have to leave you alone, especially if he needed that shirt mended

Women also got together all the time to sew, weave, embroider but also talk, gossip, assist each other’s work, and enjoy each other’s company in peace

The skill the female character has doesn’t have to be sword-fighting for her to be strong, because there’s strength and power in any skill she has

lifehack: when you see a Take One candy bowl in a restaurant, wait until noones looking and shovel candy into your pockets. god may judge you but his sins outnumber your own

the fact that we only have “herculean task” and “sisyphean task” feels so limiting. so here’s a few more tasks for your repertoire

icarian task: when you have a task you know you’re going to fail at anyways, so why not have some fun with it before it all comes crashing down

cassandrean task: when you have to deal with people you KNOW won’t listen to you, despite having accurate information, and having to watch them fumble about when you told them the solution from the start (most often witnessed in customer service)

feel free to chime in i ran out of ideas much faster than i anticipated

In the future, children will think our ways are strange. "Why do old people always grow so much milkweed in their gardens?" they'll say. "Why do old people always write down when the first bees and butterflies show up? Why do old people hate lawn grass so much? Why do old people like to sit outside and watch bees?"

We will try to explain to them that when we were young, most people's yards were almost entirely short grass with barely any flowers at all, and it was so commonplace to spray poisons to kill insects and weeds that it was feared monarch butterflies and American bumblebees would soon go extinct. We will show them pictures of sidewalks, shops, and houses surrounded by empty grass without any flowers or vegetables and they will stare at them like we stared at pictures of grimy children working in coal mines
