I rlly wish that the western toaru fandom was capable of using their brain cells to understand that yes accelerator is a mass murder but he's also literally a traumatized child who was abused and groomed by academy city into someone who would kill 10,000 clones because he just wanted people to leave him the hell alone.
like people hate that accelerator got a "redemption arc" or whatever but it completely goes over their heads that accelerator's character arcs have never been about redemption, accelerator knows he can never atone for what he's done—and he doesn't want to.
accelerator's arc has been the story of an abused child being used by a broken and corrupt system created for a single man's selfish gain, and that abused child fighting not only to over come the role he was forced into by that system, but to change and create a new system that isn't broken and corrupt. and for that change to happen, the abused child will sacrifice all he's fought for and become an enemy of the whole world.
The worst part about this whole disappointment with Index III is that I only finished Volume 10 about a week ago, and having the third season announced so soon afterwards would have just been incredible. I know NT 11 is on the verge of release but after literally binging on such a great arc and magnificent series for so long, the absence of season 3 (and no more volumes to read) is all the more painful.
Oh well, it’ll happen one day. Till then I can reflect upon what I’ve read so far.
A note about NT 10: Loved the boss rush. Accelerator has now earned Best Entrance Award (formerly awarded to Kanzaki for entering via “crashing sea plane”) I’m really intrigued by the dynamic between Accelerator and Touma, I want to see plenty more development there. A bit disappointed with Touma’s encounter with Index but Mikoto vs Touma stole the show for me. That ending with Othinus would have took the cake, but Kamachi ruined it for me (for the first time ever) by keeping her alive and making her 15cm tall! Would’ve allowed for far greater character development if she’d truly died.
Till NT 11. I need some new To Aru content to cheer me up.
us kamiichi stans talk a lot about this scene, primarily that famous “handsome” line that spawned a tsunami in shipmates, but i’d also like to point out how ooc it is for accelerator to willingly explain his thought processes in layman’s terms without any sort of prompting or hint of reluctance, and furthermore how accel regularly acts ooc and throws out everything he holds himself to be for kamijou touma’s sake or due to his influence
The third season of A Certain Magical Index really hyped up the second confrontation between Touma and Accelerator, and like.. that is NOT the reunion I most want to see.
The reunion between Mikoto Misaka and Accelerator?! Now THAT will be fucking fascinating. (It’s also going to be heartbreaking for her to learn about the very existence of Last Order and Misaka Worst, which is some shit that, frankly, her sisters should’ve already been talking to her about. But there’s no evidence of that ever occurring, so… I guess she just… is clueless. THE FUCK.
(For real though, the Sisters are utterly failing to keep in any meaningful contact with ‘Big Sis,’ let alone tell her anything about anything. Including REALLY BIG things like “oh Accelerator is our homeboy now”)
Unfortunately, at this point I can’t find any evidence that they’ve ever shared a single conversation ever again in the light novels, so I … I kinda don’t think it’s ever going to happen. And if not, god DAMN, talk about a huge missed opportunity.
I guess we can hope for a good fanfic about it… ?
Looks like it's working to me.
the hair dryer isn’t working… (-_-;)
i discussed the idea that kamachi seems to really know his way around the zodiac with some people on the toaru subreddit a while back and mentioned it here once, so i thought u guys might get a kick out of an elaboration
Kamachi really sparsely references the pseudoscience, but the fact that he deadass establishes Kamijou Touma as an Aquarius in the very first volume of the series and referenced the zodiac in the Ceremony of Mo Athair in one of the latest makes me think there’s some astrological significance/intent implicit within the franchise as a whole
Thus, i kinda wanted to point out how the major events of the series line up with the themes of the zodiac season they take place in
the series kicks off with the transition from Cancer to Leo, emphasized by both Index and Stiyl. Cancer’s theme is that of family, care/nurturance, and roots, which is relevant in the context of Kamijou’s adoption of Index being the catalyst, or “root”, if you would, of the series. When Kamijou is “reborn” in Leo season, he begins building a harem of ridiculous proportions, going into the Leo theme of popularity, egoism, and heroism
Accelerator is “reborn” during Virgo season, when he uses his power with immense precision to save someone for the first time, going into the Virgo theme of meticulousness, judgement, and analysis
Libra season encompasses Kamijou’s international exploits as well as the AC antebellum atmosphere leading up to WWIII, going into the Libra theme of balance, negotiation/mediation, and compromise. Hamazura also rises to protagonism during this season, and negotiation would become a major theme of his arc.
The series sees a transition from Libra to Scorpio during WWIII, tying into the Scorpio theme of power, debts, and death/transformation. The series itself undergoes a “rebirth” during this season, transitioning from OT to NT, and early NT deals with GREMLIN, a lingering debt from WWIII
Interesting to note, the transitions from from water sign to fire sign always mark some sort of death and rebirth. Kamijou’s memory loss happens during that transition, and iirc, the only other direct transit that takes place immediately within the events highlighted in the main series is when Othinus destroys the world on the exact day Scorpio turns to Sagittarius.
The Magic God, World Rejector, and Coronzon arcs take place during Sagittarius season, going into the Sagittarian theme of expansion, religion/philosophy, and adventure
The resolution of NT, prevalent theme of coming of age in its final arc, return of the cast to Academy City, and promotion of Accelerator to ACBC sets the stage for Capricorn, dealing with discipline, maturity, and responsibility/duty. It’s also the sign most associated with history/precedents, which could possibly indicate long-overdue resolutions, assuming this entire astrology hypothesis isn’t a coincidence. I’m pretty sure NT actually ends on the last day of Sagittarius season, and the sign itself is often criticized for being ungrounded, disorganized, and irresponsible, sorta going into a criticism of NT as a whole i’ve seen pretty often, in that it just kept expanding and never wrapped anything up
so yeah, just something cool i wanted to share and lmk if any of y’all have any thoughts or contributions!!
Accelerator swearing to save and protect Misaka Worst, a Sister grown and programmed specifically so he'd be forced to kill her and send himself mad by doing so, just so he can spite the fuckers that have been experimenting on him and the Sisters is such a fucking mood.
Of fucking course
What sick bastard doesn’t
So we all know that within accelerators abilities to control vectors. There was the reflection that was always active before he got his injury.
But theres a panel where last order is teasing him “asking how he can be the strongest esper if he cries when he gets shampoo in his eyes.”
With him of course yelling that he wasnt crying and that that was the first time it had happened
And the fact that we they first met and she asked if he dyed his hair that color to look intimidating he said and that his ability just reflected the suns uv Ray’s.
What if last order wanted to go to the beach and she drop accelerator along. After he sustained his injury to his brain. he still was able to use his abilities he just had to activate his electrode that allows him to use the misaka net work to run calculations.
So essentially my brains wondering how he would react to getting a sun burned since he normally wouldnt have to worry about that since his ability before would normally reflect the sun’s Ray’s. Or just you know normal stuff that everyday people would have to go through that he normally wouldnt have to deal with before.
I feel like it could make for a few interesting manga strips lol
@tsundelerator
Just curious, who do you think Accelerator’s parents were and why did they just dump him in Academy City never to be spoken of again?Do you think he is an only child? Or that he actually does have a brother or sister and just doesn’t know of them? Just wanted to know your input on the matter.
ahhh the million dollar question on Accel’s past,,
Kamachi said pretty much this and only this about Accelerator’s family.
>“From the bottom of his heart, what Accelerator wants is not a lover but a family. In spite of knowing nothing about what a family is, he’s still been able to act as a parent for Last Order (though it’s unknown whether as a father or a mother), although there are some contradictions with how he acts as a child around Yomikawa and Yoshikawa (most prominently, the scene in Volume 15 where Yomikawa takes the gun out of his hands).”
There’s not really enough information on this for me to give a definite answer tbh. I headcanoned that he had a long forgotten little sister once, but that’s pretty much it. There’s a possibility that his birth parents could be someone we’ve already been introduced to, but it’s impossible to really tell.
Kamachi seems to actually prefer non-blood-related familial relationships to standard blood-related sibling relationships, seeing how prevalent the former is and how nearly nonexistent the latter is.
Honestly though, given how prevalent Accelerator’s inhuman theme is, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that he wasn’t entirely human, like a test-tube baby, artificial being, or a virgin birth or something lmao. jk but for real though. There are several attributes him that don’t really add up, e.g. how reflection resulted in an albino appearance, as albinism is a genetic trait rather than an environmental one; how vector transformation is actually somewhat of an anomaly among esper abilities; how he seems to have a healing factor that works independently of vector control; etc.. Though they could just be attributed to Kamachi half-assing science, or omitting some details. One way or another @Kamachi deliver us some goddamn answers
A Certain Mobility-Impaired Antihero
Accelerator- To Aru Majutsu no Index
Awaki: “Right… you don’t have any of the processing ability that you had before! You don’t have any of the former power you used to possess!”
Accelerator: “It’s true that I received damage to my brain on that day. But you see, just because I’m weaker doesn’t make you stronger, does it?”
A few days ago, quarianmagicalgirl mentioned wanting to submit something for Disabilityfest featuring a character who ‘was a complete monster before acquiring his disability’, where instead of driving him to further villainy, it marked a major moral turning point in his life. If she’s not talking about Accelerator, I’d like to know who exactly she had in mind, because that means there’s at least two of them.
Another ‘favorite disabled character’ who is also in my top ten favorite characters overall, Accelerator starts the series as a mass murderer who has methodically slaughtered over 10,000 cloned esper girls- who goes on have a change of heart to take a bullet to the head protecting one of the remaining 9,970. He becomes a protector to the Sisters, and they and their psychic link become the keystone of his assistive technology.
Here, again, Accelerator is a bit of a subversion to common disability narratives. Created by the world’s greatest doctor in a canon where sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic if it weren’t for the fact that magic also exists, Accelerator’s 'calculation assistance device’ allows him to be ambulatory and compensates for the aphasia and innumeracy caused by his injury- but it’s distinctly written as an aide rather than a cure. He can access a weakened version of his esper powers on a very temporary basis by burning through its battery power and rapidly reducing the amount of time he has , but on a day-to-day basis, he functions as a normal disabled person. He walks with a forearm crutch (that canon insists on calling a cane), has to recharge his assistive tech on a regular basis, and he probably experiences other subtle side-affects of his brain injury as well.
And he continues to be both a fascinatingly complex character and a terrifying badass.
