i'm so fascinated by the "just ken." in the context of the tagline (she's everything, he's just ken) it makes it sound like ken is just an accessory to barbie and is nothing without her, but in the actual movie in the speech barbie gives, she turns the phrase on its head. ken isn't an accessory to barbie, he isn't the attention barbie gives him, he's just ken. and that's not even mentioning the "she's everything" part of the tagline and how it goes with gloria's speech of women having to fulfill the impossible task of fitting into every box and juggle conflicting expectations and roles just to be liked by society. the tagline represents opposite ends of a spectrum but by the end of the movie barbie and ken meet in the middle, where they're each allowed to be their own person independent of the expectations and insecurities they've been operating on. this movie, man
So I noticed something about the stories in Sweet Sorrows.
The first and the last are about the pirate and the girl, the ancient love story (Once, very long ago…Time fell in love with Fate). Then there’s the Acolyte. The Zachary, the son of the fortune-teller, and the main narrator when the book is in the present (and the only one for this section of it). Then the dollhouse (something someone else mentioned was a little like a constantly growing Harbor itself, and which comes back when the bees do.). Then the Guardian story, which includes Dorian. Then our introduction to Elenore, then the inhabitants of Harbors (people like and including Allegra), then the Keepers (Now there is only one), then Simon, the man lost in time.
Introducing us to the main players. So I wonder, what if the Acolyte who sang the full month was Rhyme?
I can’t stop thinking about how perfectly Barbie portrays girlhood and growing up… How you’re born in a perfect pink world, where you make the rules and get to prioritise whimsies and friendship and beauty, and then you notice something has changed, you discover that something is wrong with you, and you’re offered an illusion of choice, but even if you’d rather keep wearing your heels and go home and be safe and comfortable, you have to choose the Birkenstock, you have to leave your home, you have to grow up. So you’re thrust into this gritty, unfeeling world, where you’re scrutinised and suppressed, where you want to disappear into yourself, because everything is harsh and big and you are tiny and fragile and inadequate. And as overwhelming and impossible as it seems, you survive it. You find truth in the things you believed in when you were young, the inherent good in humanity, connection and love; your friends who look at you while you are crying, and tell you that they cannot imagine what it is that you do not like about yourself.
richard papen choosing to almost freeze to death rather than asking for help was the most relatable thing he ever did. in this essay i will
a deeper analysis of richard making out with francis (because what else am i supposed to do?)
to set the scene, this is hours after the Greek class kills bunny. francis shows up in richard’s dorm room, sick of being alone. richard, still dizzy and dazed from the Demerol judy had given him, goes up to his bureau to grab something. as he does, francis swoops up behind him. and bam. gay stuff.
richard — as he says — isn’t into francis and is apparently straight. now let’s say he is. he claims in his narration that he made out with francis out of impulse, reflex, and nothing more. now if this is true this goes to show richard’s willingness to go through with anything at all, no matter how against his true behavior and nature, for and with the Greek class.
he’s so succumbed into the world of these students that he will go as far as to completely erasing himself in order to comply with whatever they are doing. he may not even REALIZE, but he just goes along with everything they do, never questioning it, even if his own ideas are put at the coffin. this is proven through out the story, but this kissing scene was just an example.
OR of course richard is just gay for francis (pls yes) and i’m over analyzing. but can anyone ever over analyze tsh?! i think not.
with that, i lay my analysis down and out.

having an imagination like mine is a wonder and a curse. i feel so much and create so much but most of what it chooses to do is create an alternate reality for me to hide in. a world where i get everything i want and i have become everything i have ever wanted to be and i am beautiful and witty and smart and impressive and sparkling. but the funniest part of all is that i suffer there too. sometimes even more than i do here. but the difference is that, in my head, someone is there to hold me.
You are most powerful when you are most silent. People never expect silence. They expect words, motion, defense, offense, back and forth. They expect to leap into the fray. They are ready, fists up, words hanging leaping from their mouths. Silence? No.

“It’s literally impossible to be a woman.
You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow, we're always doing it wrong?
You have to be thin, but not too thin, and you can never say you wanna be thin. You have to say you wanna be healthy, but also, you have to BE THIN.
You have to have money, but you can't ask for money because that's crass.
You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean.
You have to lead, but you can't squash other people's ideas.
You're supposed to love being a mother, but don't talk about your kids all the damn time.
You have to be a career woman, but also, always be looking out for other people.
You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is INSANE, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining!
You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood, but ALWAYS STAND OUT and ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL. But never forget that the system is rigged, so find a way to acknowledge that but ALSO, always be grateful!
You have to never get old. Never be rude. Never show off. Never be selfish. Never fall down. Never fail. Never show fear. Never get OUT OF LINE. It's too hard! It's too contradictory, and nobody gives you a medal or says 'thank you!' And it turns out, in fact, that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also, everything is your fault.
I'm just so tired of watching myself, and every single other woman tie herself into knots, so that people will like us.
And if all of that, is also true for a doll just representing a woman, then I don't even know." -Gloria the barbie movie
this is it. this is exactly it oh my god.
