I Saw A Video Once That Tried To Claim That Chuuya Accidentally Became Popular, And I Actually Laughed.

I saw a video once that tried to claim that Chuuya accidentally became popular, and I actually laughed. Like no. Nobody gives a character a hat, gloves, red hair, and a choker without at least expecting they'd be popular. No one makes a character short, a wine lover, loud, and a Mafia executive if they didn't suspect they'd be popular. you don't make a character the ex partner to the other most popular character and have them bicker like children if you thought, "eh, no one cares about this guy." No one gives a character the power of gravity manipulation and the power to create black holes when they go feral if they thought, "yeah, pretty mid-tier character" NO ONE MAKES A CHARACTER JUMP OFF A PLANE AND FIGHT A DRAGON—

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there's a common misconception that's been permeating the fandom, even on the official wiki, that's just...not true.

Dazai met Akutagawa when he became an executive, which happened when he was 17-18. In both The Heartless Cur (the short story written by Asagiri about how Akutagawa and Dazai met) and Beast, which follows the original timeline, albeit with some changes, it flat out states that the interaction was only four and a half years prior to the main story. Which means Akutagawa knew Dazai for six months. He was already either fifteen or sixteen when they met, and they haven't known each other for that long. Not fourteen.

Ok, So We're All Talking About Mori Seemed To Have Nothing Better Do To Than To Glue In Chuuya's Fangs.

Ok, so we're all talking about Mori seemed to have nothing better do to than to glue in Chuuya's fangs. His organization has crumbled, they've all been turned into actual vampires, a guy is LITERALLY trying to take over the world, and Mori's over here glueing in the fangs to deliberately mess with Chuuya.

But.

I think Mori may have been onto something here. Imagine, will you, that he DIDN'T glue in the fangs. I imagine the scene might have gone something like this (I can't draw for the life of me, so we're gonna have to write this out, though it'd be a funny comic, if anyone's interested in making it).

Ehem.

Chuuya arrives to kill Dazai. The music is suspenseful, the air is tense. Fyodor is watching the whole interaction so he can witness Dazai's death in glorious HD.

"C'mon, Chuuya," taunts Dazai. "Give me one of your flimsy punches."

Chuuya snarls and lunges forwards. And that's when one of his fangs falls out of his mouth and clatters onto the floor.

The music stops. Crickets chirp in the distance. Chuuya stares at the fang. Dazai stares at the fang. They look up and stare at each other. Then, their gazes slowly turn up to the camera, where Fyodor is sitting, watching the whole thing play out. Belatedly, Chuuya goes, "uhhhaaahhhhhhAHHHHHHHH!!!" and clutches his cheek.

"It's the other side," Dazai informs him under his breath.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!" He switches sides. "My tooth fell out??" He glances back up at the camera, where Fyodor is watching, his expression deadpan. "Know any good, uh, vampire dentists in the area? Aha. Ahahah. Hahahahah-"

Fyodor looks done with life. "I'm not buying it."

"Well. Drat."

Let's be real, this season would have gone VERY differently is this happened. That would have been quite a way to reveal the whole vampire fake out, but I think it's for the better that Mori glued them in, even if his intentions were just to mess with Chuuya and it caused some severe annoyance afterwards.

Something about how the "evil" half of double black are the ones who push it onto the next generation.

Mori decided to make Chuuya and Dazai work together because Natsume did for him and Fukuzawa.

Dazai forcing Akutagawa and Atsushi together.

You could attribute this to Mori and Dazai both being manipulators who are trying to utilize people for their benefit, but I think it's more than that. They know what it feels like to have that light in their lives. To partner up with "good" person. So much so that they want to push it onto the next generation, because they want the one they see themselves in to have that light in their life. Dazai wants Akutagawa to have Atsushi to temper that darkness. Mori wanted Chuuya for Dazai to give him a reason to live. Maybe one day Akutagawa will be pushing a different version of skk in some other lost soul he sees himself in, trying to save him in the only way he knows how. And the cycle will continue.

Chuuya (mostly) Being A Law-abiding Citizen Despite The Convenience Of His Ability And His Motorcycle

Chuuya (mostly) being a law-abiding citizen despite the convenience of his ability and his motorcycle until the situation calls for it The idea that at any time an emergency strikes wherever they are at any given time, Chuuya will just start scaling buildings himself or with his motorcycle so he's not inconvenienced by traffic and red lights while the ability-less are stuck waiting in traffic and forced to watch Chuuya blitzing by on the buildings Chuuya waiting in traffic when an emergency strikes and he floats himself and his bike out of traffic to take a shortcut and everyone just. watches. He's enjoying the breeze on his face as he's riding the buildings, shouting 'Yeah' the entire time

Chuuya's backstory is so insane because like, any one event from 15-Stormbringer would be enough to constitute a lesser man's entire tragic backstory. Heck, that one scene from Dead Apple where you learn six of his friends died would be enough to be a tragic backstory. Grew up on the streets, forced to become the leader of a group of children who only saw you as a weapon, struggling with your own humanity, betrayal, five friends being brutally murdered because of you, even the detective who wanted to bring him out of the Mafia dying could be enough of a backstory, and I haven't even gotten to the torture yet. But Chuuya's just special like that.

Ok, I'm convinced at this point that instead of teaching English, schools should just start getting their students into bsd, because honestly, the effects are about the same.

Like, what is this fandom??? As far as anime go, it's sort of known, but it's not even close to mainstream, and then you join the fandom to discover that it's actually huge.

-The fans will write five thousand word analyses, complete with textual evidence, about anything and everything, and they'll all be more well written and deeper than their thematic essay for English class.

-They won't even think twice about reading a bunch of classics to understand their favorite characters, and then they'll happily write you an analysis of a Japanese classic written in the mid-twentieth century and how it connects to their favorite character. They'll casually read Crime and Punishment, a book english teachers have no hope of having their students read in general, let alone for fun, and they'll do it and then give their theories about how it may connect to the villain's powers. They also end up just getting into classic literature in general.

-Ask them to give a summary of the book they had to read, they'll stare at you blankly, but ask them about the chain of abuse vs the savoir chain and you will hear a psychological breakdown on the concept of abuse, and how different characters treat others differently because etc etc etc.

-Not even the top criminal defense lawyer could compete with a bungou stray dogs fan explaining why Chuuya Nakahara, a man who is an executive in the Mafia, a man who has killed many people, has gotten involved in smuggling and all sorts of illegal activities, is actually a good person and deserves all the sunlight and happiness in the world.

-And the art that comes out of it??? The fanfictions, the fanart, the edits- I've read fanfiction that made me feel more than a published book ever will. Seen fanart that belongs in a museum, and the edits are some of the coolest stuff known to man.

-And they're just so low key??? Like seriously, don't teach English, teach bungou stray dogs. You'd get better results that way.

A cute detail I love about the Agency's office is that everyone else's desks have files and laptops on it while Ranpo's just has a singular phone because it's the only thing he needs to do his job; get calls and go detective. And then come home and snack
