I saw this one post ages ago where someone said that video games can’t have plus-size characters, because “how could they do cool action?” I can’t find the post, but it inspired me to show you guys some gifs of real people.
Some character designs with some…atypical color choices? I guess. I don’t know what’s going on in that area.
This is Nimona and her supervillain friend (He doesn’t have a name yet, I’m working on that). Nimona is his sidekick/squire, they’re like the Batman and Robin of slightly Medieval villains, but she’s actually way more evil than him. He does what he does to make a point, and he doesn’t really want anyone get hurt - Nimona just gets a kick out of destroying stuff.
I’m going to attempt to make a two page comic with them? We’ll see how this goes.
So, pretty frequently writers screw up when they write about injuries. People are clonked over the head, pass out for hours, and wake up with just a headache… Eragon breaks his wrist and it’s just fine within days… Wounds heal with nary a scar, ever…
I’m aiming to fix that.
Here are over 100 links covering just about every facet of traumatic injuries (physical, psychological, long-term), focusing mainly on burns, concussions, fractures, and lacerations. Now you can beat up your characters properly!

Location pain chart: Originally intended for tattoo pain, but pretty accurate for cuts
General note: Deeper=more serious. Elevate wounded limb so that gravity draws blood towards heart. Scalp wounds also bleed a lot but tend to be superficial. If it’s dirty, risk infection. If it hits the digestive system and you don’t die immediately, infection’ll probably kill you. Don’t forget the possibility of tetanus! If a wound is positioned such that movement would cause the wound to gape open (i.e. horizontally across the knee) it’s harder to keep it closed and may take longer for it to heal.

Broken noses
Broken digits: Fingers and toes
General notes: If it’s a compound fracture (bone poking through) good luck fixing it on your own. If the bone is in multiple pieces, surgery is necessary to fix it—probably can’t reduce (“set”) it from the outside. Older people heal more slowly. It’s possible for bones to “heal” crooked and cause long-term problems and joint pain. Consider damage to nearby nerves, muscle, and blood vessels.

Ok. So. We all know this iconic scene right? Cool, I really wanna unpack it a bit tho.
Let start with the way Sam positions himself:
Sam moves himself so that when he catches Bucky he's the one who will likely hit the ground first and take the brunt of the damage/impact. Sam goes out of his way to save the supersoldier with a metal arm and around a century of combat experience. And you can tell that the supersoldier in question didn't fucking expect it.
Bucky looks really fucking confused and slightly on edge when the camera flips to him while Sam's diving at him. I don't want to say that Bucky isn't used to being saved (Im hoping this expression doesn't mean he was expecting to get attacked) but I don't think that Bucky is used to being saved. Not only is he getting rescued, he's being treated as carefully/gently as possible considering the situation. For example, the way Sam grabs him:
HE SUPPORTS HIS HEAD!!!!!! HE FUCKING SUPPORTED HIS HEAD AND NECK!!! HEAT OF THE GODAMN MOMENT AND SAM'S IMMEDIATE INSTINCT IS TO PREVENT AS MANY INJURIES AS POSSIBLE!!! AND NOT EVEN ON HIMSELF HE IS LITTERALY ONLY SUPPORTING BUCKY IN THIS MOMENT BCS HIS WINGS ARE FOLDED IN AS HE FUCKING GRABS HIM!!!! AND THEN THIS:
Sam tucks Bucky's head into his shoulder as they are sliding across the gound infront of a tire the size of a small child that could easily crush them both (also this screenshot was really hard to fucking get cause this shit all happened within the span of a second). Sam keeps Bucky's head tucked through the rest of the time that they're under the truck before they both get catapulted across a field of flowers (top comedy because Im a slut for irony). And in the shot that they come out from under the truck you can see that Sam is still holding Bucky above him and off the ground, still taking the full force of the impact. He even has his fucking legs off the ground:
(It's a fucking hilarious screenshot without context). This is really great cause Bucky is usually used as something of a battering ram or a tool bcs of his inhuman strength and the metal arm, but right now he's the one being protected while Sam uses himself as a shield. This is repayed in the next few shots that show them skidding/rolling (I would say tumbling but it's more violent then that) across the field:
Fellas is it gay to hold you partner/coworker close to your chest as you roll down a hill to evenly distribute the force of the fall? Aside from how not-hetero this one shot is, Sam is now the one with his head tucked in but he still has his arms wrapped tightly around Bucky's torso whereas Bucky has his grip around Sam's shoulders. (idk if yall have ever been put in a situation similar to this but i have, obviously not to this fucking extent, but the person whose arms are around the other's shoulders usually takes more damage as they're shielding the other). Anyways, we all know how they end up:
Sam, now holding onto the straps of Bucky's vest thing, is on the bottom (sexualize that and i'll block you 😘) and still holding him off the ground. I think it's safe to say that Bucky is heavier then Sam but was still man handled into that position for his own good. I wanna revisit my claim of Bucky not being used to getting saved when we look at his expression when he rolls off of Sam:
He looks... idek ig this is what people mean when they say "unreadable expression" because his face is kinda blank but you can also tell he's thinking about something. Im gonna go ahead and assume he's confused because, again, why??? was he treated??? so gently??? (up until he was a smart ass about the shield ofc). Anyways, that's basically it for this post I just wanted to point out some details that were sticking out to me.

1. WEARING A SHAWL TO BATTLE IS THE EQUIVALENT OF HAVING GIRLS FIGHT IN STILLETTOS.
Just so you know, this is what I’m talking about;
-Is it bad-ass? Abso-fucking-lutely. Is it Practical? Not a chance in hell. Especially not if it’s silk. If it’s cotton, you are skating on thin fucking ice. That bitch will NOT stay on. It barely stays on with me just walking down the street to Walmart. Wielding axes and rifles and swords and daggers? I PROMISE you it will not do the job it’s expected to-WHICH IS TO COVER THE HAIR. (Some muslim girls dont wear them-and that’s fine. But those who DO do it to completely cover the hair in public. Is it ~Aesthetic~ to see the flyaway hairs in battle? Sure, but those aren’t usually practical either. )Consider instead;
sport shawls
-For one thing, it’s actually DESIGNED to be worn to atheletic activities. Archers tuck hems into the collar of their shirts so they don’t get in the way, and track runners pins (ill get to this bit later) them down into the shirts to prevent flyaway bits and to stop them from getting slapped in the face. It’s breathable, stretchy, presentable without being attention seeking.
Bawals
In a pinch, bawals work just as well-as long as you specify that they are COTTON. Unlike the shawl, which are rectangular, bawals are SQUARE, and thus easier to manipulate, fold and pin down. If you wear it right, they carry an equal aesthetic value to shawls, and come in plenty of pretty patterns as well.
2. I’m not sure about the USA, but the girls I know wear this underneath the headscarf;
Does it kinda look like a beanie? It sort of works like a beanie too. Hair is slippery. It tucks in any extra hair you might miss just by wearing the headscarf, its harder to pull down and on the event the shawl DOES fall down, your hair is still not exposed. It protects the ears-which is important even on a daily basis, because pins, headphones and any other headgear that might pinch them. It comes in plenty of designs, including ones that has open backs to allow long hair and ponytails.
3.SPEAKING OF PINS; I’M TALKING ABOUT THESE BAD BOYS;
BROOCHES
though , i suppose most of y’all are most familiar with safety pins, right?
what’s the difference? Well, if your oc/character is an athlete, it’s actually LEAST likely they’ll be wearing SAFETY PINS. They’re cheap and super easy to buy in bulk, true, but they also SUPER easy to wear out even with the smallest amount of strenuous activity. Between the three of ‘em, I’d put the brooches as the best option to wear in battle because 1) it has a large surface area, thus hurts less when pressed on with heavy items, which includes bag straps and weapons, (pins are sharp and can poke you painfully); and 2) more secure-the latch is covered by the gaudy jewellery above, and theyre usually smaller and tighter. Stays on the stubbornnest, even when headscarf is pulled. very roughly. I’m saying that even the cheapest brooches will allow the shawl to be ripped apart before even letting it go.
3. They probably ponytail their hair. Because Come On, guys.
Anyway it’s been bothering me and I just thought if yall could bother knowing the difference between skin tones for POC you could bother with muslim practicalities too. Or something
@supergnome-a I went with more body goals than I did my actual appearance- but :)

To all my non-Jewish fanfic writers who want to write about Hanukkah: hi!! Thank you for taking an interest in our culture and traditions and for wanting to be inclusive. We really appreciate it! I just want to mention a few things to keep in mind while you’re doing this.
1. HANUKKAH IS NOT JUST “JEWISH CHRISTMAS”. This is the big one. Yes, the two holidays happen to be around the same time, and the Christian/capitalist society that we live in decided to make Hanukkah a big deal to sell more decorations or something. But it is in fact it’s own thing, and is a fairly minor holiday. Our big, most important holidays are in the fall! Which brings me to,
2. The original story of Hanukkah is about the Maccabees, a group of Jews who resisted the forced assimilation into an oppressive society that said “convert or die.” So in the spirit of that, I BEG you. Do not write a fic about a poor clueless Jewish person being shown the magic of Christmas and thinking it’s so much better, or any sort of trying to save/convert us bs. That’s just antisemitism, baby. We are proud of our unique culture and heritage that has lasted thousands of years of persecution.
3. Please be respectful when talking about Orthodox or Hasidic Jews. Orthodox women are not oppressed. (Many Jewish women born outside of Orthodoxy actually choose to convert into it, and to adopt the rules of modesty! They are called Ba’al teshuva!) If you’re going to write a fic about a person who grew up Orthodox or otherwise very religious but chose to leave it, please be kind and don’t make generalizations.
Mostly my point is to just be respectful. Jewish people are not a monolith. There are lots of different ethnic groups under the umbrella of the Jewish people with different traditions that are all incredibly beautiful and important. When writing about us, please do your research and talk to Jewish people about our experiences. If you don’t know any, message me! I’m always happy to talk about it.
Happy writing, and chag Hanukkah sameach!
I spent years just lurking on tumblr but recently I’ve been making TSP content so I guess this is a TSP account now?they/void/ink/star/eye(Always feel free to message me or send in an ask <3)
