a crumb of demo thoughts perhaps

Demo is like the one of the handful of tf2 characters that I will let myself psychoanalyze without feeling like I’m going too insane for doing it. His birth parents gave him up. He was adopted. He blew up his adoptive parents. His birth parents showed up and said “psyche we see now that you have talent and use we’ll take you back now”. He works to meet literal impossible standards. He’s an alcoholic. He loves his friends. He loves his friends so much. Ok? Ok. It’s just so much. (also there’s the wizard thing. Also the identity issues. the cyclops complex.) like brother if I grew up like that I would day drink and blow things up too! Good fucking god!

idk also just sort of thinking how he’s kind of the most outwardly nice and friendly merc, at least as far as the official comics are concerned. He makes sure to assure soldier that he’ll recognize him in disguise, he’s the one to grab onto sniper after he’s shot, he’s got the big dumb smile in the “we’re team fortress, and you’re DEAD” lineup. I don’t even know where I’m GOING with any of this. I’m just sort of fascinated by him. He’s a guy with so much going on and he’s dealing with it but no he’s not (alcoholic) but yes he is (cares for his friends) but no he’s not (hinged his happiness on his one job he cared about and crumbled after he lost it) but also yes he is (gestures fucking wildly)

Scout and Miss Pauling friendship is one of my fave things to think about but I think a lot of people look over the more complex parts (as complex as fucking. TF2 lore gets) like Scout feelings for Miss Pauling are genuine and he's mostly just really lame about it rather the internally a creep but Miss Pauling doesn't owe liking him due to that, even if you go in the transfem Scout route. I think there have to be a talk and a lot of awkward feelings but i think after a while they would be good friends. Sorry to ramble here in your askbox I just wish this dynamic was explored more in the fandom without outright dismissing character traits of either of them.

No yeah ur literally so right n I've def talked before about how this is the ONE vaguely complex canon character thing I get to be snotty about and that I think like. there are Implications(tm) if you choose to make it so that Scout was NEVER attracted to Pauling ever (usually bc "he's gay") or Pauling is actually attracted to men and now she and Scout can date!! like I'm trying not to be A Hater but I rlly do think a lot of people just haven't deconstructed how they think about men (for the sake of the intentions of the source material, Scout will be a man in this post) who are attracted to women, especially the "loser who gets the girl in the end" archetype. If Scout is attracted to Pauling, he is not in any way owed her reciprocation, EVEN IF she were attracted to men. And people have friends that they're attracted to who don't reciprocate for whatever reason and they manage to work it out. The actual canon Scout/Pauling dynamic (which is that he's really into her and thinks she's into him but she's not and he's lame) IS very funny, but if you want to imagine any sort of closure for these characters it has to involve him coming to terms with it and like. learning to deal. I am SO happy that there seem to be absolutely zero hints of Scout and Pauling actually hooking up at the end of the comic (but what do I know) bc I am SICK of every piece of media on the planet feeling the need to shove a man and a woman together because he likes her and therefore deserves her. This is like, tf2 level nuance! It's extremely simple! Idk this is such like. a common relationship thing that happens in real life and if people can't handle it when cartoon hat people do it idk how they'd handle it if it were happening to them or to one of their friends

they got Jedediah on a horse, which, okay, cool, love that for him, but then they have Octavius just standing really... stiffly? without his then-new canonical pet squirrel? and now i'm wondering why they gave Jedediah his horse but not Octavius his beloved pet squirrel.

I'm sure part of the reason why some people are resistant to Silver being twisted from Aurora is because he's more active (at least in Book 7) and is generally taking on a more 'hero' role than Aurora has.

But what if I told you there's a 2003 Disney Princess game for Gameboy Advance that has Aurora being the hero of the story of Sleeping beauty 👀

There's a non-zero chance that Yana might have looked into this game since she used Disney's Aladdin in Nasira's Revenge from 2000 as inspiration for Najma

In the game, Maleficent targets the three good fairies and Aurora takes it upon herself to rescue them with magic she borrowed from them (and animal friends), all while she's being hunted down by Maleficent.

When she frees them, she's encouraged to rescue everyone. She also fights against Maleficent (with the assistance of the three fairies) and fulfills saves herself and her kingdom (rip Phillip he's nowhere to be seen)

So not out of the realm of possibility for a character based on a princess to do something more active in a reimagining story. This might've been an excuse to yap about a game I just started to get to play again on an emulation I found online lol

But I remember playing Aurora's story very vividly as a kid. I don't think it's bad to take previously static characters and give them more agency to do things, even if their first iteration was still good. Silver being princess-coded but still an active character is fun to me at least.

Every day. Every damn day I question why THIS is the way they established MK's Monkey Demon Form/Identity. He's flickering, shards are coming off of him (shattered sense of identity), he seems to be in pain, and he radiates so much power. Overall it gives the impression that he's fighting this form off, trying to maintain his humanity/the current status quo.

And I'm just sitting here waiting for his current negative character arc to go down FURTHER
