With all the revived hype surrounding Billy from the latest S4 trailer, I’m reminded why I will forever be grateful that the role was given to someone like Dacre Montgomery. With all the speculation of Billy not only returning, but possibly returning as ANOTHER corrupted version of himself, Dacre is the only reason why I still have hope for Billy’s arc.
He is the reason why Billy is as complex and nuanced as he is in canon. Judging from past interviews, it seems like the Duffers were content to just let Billy be this two dimensional bully who’s an irredeemable maniac (and possibly still believe he is to some extent). But it was Dacre who humanized him. He understood that no one is simply born evil, that people like Billy have deeper issues going on in their lives. He suggested to add the scene with his dad abusing him and to give him a backstory of how he was abandoned by the only person who loved him. He demonstrated how all that shit twisted a sweet little boy into an angry, aggressive teenager. It would be enough to turn anybody into a Billy Hargrove.
Dacre gave the audience a reason to sympathize with Billy and demonstrated how he still has the potential to become a better person and overcome his toxic ways.
So, no matter what role Billy plays this season (whether it be alive, in flashbacks, or in some monster form), I trust that Dacre will put all his effort to maintain and continue Billy’s character development.
mother, son and holy spirit
I made a uquiz for Billy bitches only!
Which Billy are you???
This is my first uquiz so don't expect anything good
Hey duffle bags, way to shat all over Dacre’s hard work on trying to humanize Billy whilst he couldn’t be on set to defend him.
I feel so gross whenever fanon plays off Snape's parental issues as an excuse that he actively uses, in-universe, to make Lily feel sorry for him and overlook his bad behavior.
Not only is it out-of character for him, the way it's often portrayed gives off the impression that Snape's account of the severity of the situation is unreliable — when the only context his abusive home life is ever brought up is when he's being emotionally manipulative for personal gain, isn't it then likely that he would be exaggerating the situation?
A really prominent trait of canon Snape is that he doesn't like being pitied. He actually hates being seen as a victim. He would much rather be seen as a terrible person than as a hurt, vulnerable one. It's the reason he ends up calling Lily mudblood in the first place. It's why he'd sooner join the Death Eaters than reach out for help.
IDK — Just the fact that some antis apparently acknowledge Snape's canonically abusive childhood, but then spin it into something he consistently takes advantage of to manipulate others for sympathy and forgiveness to the point it comes off as deceptive, when that's actually pretty much the opposite of how he acts in canon... it makes my skin crawl.
argyle being an older brother to billy when
The Duffers, projecting: Billy role is to be the big bad bully to us our heroes and he’s gonna be mean and loud and an overall maniac because he is the reincarnation of all things EVIILL.
Dacre Montgomery, having the heart of gold that he does: *walks on set
I know I’m about to sound like a petty bitch here but I kind of can’t wait for someone’s fav to be killed off. I’ve had to listen to the majority of the ST fandom saying awful things about my favorite character saying he deserved to die in such a violent horrific way. Saying the abuse he endured didn’t matter at all. So like sucks to be you now. 🤷♀️
Yeah, let’s be honest. Many people view Steve through fanon colored glasses. He is always reluctant, and even annoyed, to be dragged into whatever schemes the kids concocted. And yeah sure, he protects the kids when it comes down to it but it’s mostly out of a sense of obligation (being the oldest), not because they’re his uwu children. The only one he has a genuine bond with is Dustin (and maybe Max but even then we can’t be sure since we don’t see Steve visit Max in the hospital). The rest of them are kinda just there lmao. No hate on Steve, but his character has really been warped from how he really is in canon.
Real talk… the babysitter steve narrative is very fanon. Steve within the show never like… actually cares about the kids? Lmfao this is the same man who let a random 10 year old join his Russian conspiracy plot because no one else could fit in a vent like… I think y’all need to start opening your eyes
Honestly, the entire time watching S3, I was clinging onto the hope that, by some miracle, he was going to be saved, that the main cast will say “yeah, Billy was a major dick to most of us, but NO ONE deserves to be used by that monster in such a gruesome way” and that he was make it out alive. BARELY, but alive.
But WHAT did they do??
Delay every possible second they had to kill the Mind Flayer (and possibly save Billy) and put in some corny ass singing montage for some cheap laughs. Some forced cutesy montage was given more importance than giving Billy a fighting chance to make it out alive.
….let me tell you, I have never felt a bigger slap in the face by a TV show EVER.
The Duffers gave Billy’s character the ultimate middle finger. By not giving him a chance to change and repent for his actions. By not giving his relationship with Max a chance to heal and grow into a more healthy dynamic. By not letting Billy become a better person, than BOTH of his parents.
There was SO much potential to show that people who turn out like Billy ARE capable of change, to undo the toxic coping mechanisms that they learned, to heal their relationships, and, most importantly IMO, that they are worth fighting for.
The Duffers really demonstrated that they don’t know how to handle the complexities of their own characters and that they don’t really give a shit anyway. It’s all about the cheap laughs and lazily recycling 80’s tropes.
The theories of Billy (and Dacre) possibly returning is the only reason why I will try and watch S4. And if Billy only returns as flashbacks, I will stay for those scenes and then leave the rest of the story up for my imagination.
Look I know how much we all hate Neil. I hate him too, with all my heart. But just a fact - billy's mother abandoned her son. She left him. With Neil, knowing what kind of person he was. She made a choice to save herself, but to leave her little son to drown.
Neil could've given billy for adoption/foster home/abandoned him too. He didn't. He kept him. As a punching bag. Was it the only reason? My guess is, he was.just.responsible. Just like his own dad had probably taught him to be.
I don't know what's better in this case, honestly, to be given up for foster care or to be abused by your father during YEARS.
I hate Neil, but I hate Billy's mom more.
And Billy???? I've read a lot of fics how he hates his dad. And, yes, he should. He does hate his dad. However, that's the thing about parents - no matter how much you hate them, deep down, in your core, you love them. The relationship between parents and children is so hopelessly complicated.
Why am I writing all this? To cry about billy one more time. I think he loved his mom, despite the fact that she selfishly chose her own interests over the well-being of her son. I even think Billy loved his dad, under all those layers of hate, despite the fact that he was an abusive piece of shit.
I'm writing it to once again put into words my disgust for the duffers, because BECAUSE you don't take a broken teenager, show everyone HOW and why he was broken and torn, and then kill him off to a tune of Neverending story or whatever this stupid song was called.
The more I think about Billy, the more heartbroken I become because it's abysmal, how deep his suffering was. Instead of fixing it, they chose the Neverending story finale, sending what kind of message to all the broken teens out there ..???? That it's all fucking hopeless?? That you can drown in your pain and nobody will give a damn?
Fuck them, honestly. You can't really make a cheap goo monster horror story based on the suffering of a child.
Aaand I made myself cry again. Yay.
