can i galaxy brain for a moment?
my theory is that simone serves the literary purpose of the everyman, like watson in sherlock holmes or nick carraway in the great gatsby. she is the vessel by which the viewer relates to and understands the world, ie the events of each episode of overboard. this is further evidenced when she references the memes that the audience would immediately draw associations to, or laugh incredibly loudly at goofs. that’s why she’s the only one who catches on to being gaslighted by brian in werewolf (though she is quickly convinced afterwards) and she begins to graffiti the stars in cosmic encounter when the viewer too begins to be confused by the events that occur.
rt with your signature look
Everyone needs their own signature look. Even if it’s ripped off from your favourite character from a film you like, maybe it’s just wearing the same coat you love till you wear it out completely, a favourite repetitive colour or a style from another era, perhaps a person you’ve read about, fiction or non-fiction, real or not has inspired you. The point is, we all need to find that special way of dressing ourselves that makes us feel like the main character of our own private novel.
Two Professional Video Producers (x)
(alt. title: Wait For It)
rbing to add:
- Bri’s old youtube channel, PlasmaP, which has some fantastic and beautiful solo songs (my favorite is the humble knight but disclaimer is also a BOP)
- Pat and Bri’s shortish eight-episode series Brian’s First Half-Life which includes Brian doing his best to play video games and conversations about things ranging from food crimes they’d commit to Woodstock to bee guns. There’s also some bonus Smash Bros content where you can watch them come up with increasingly dumb Smash Bros loadouts (pinball, anyone?
- The E3 testing streams where you can watch Pat insult an AirBnB, Brian sprint around a pitch-black California suburban neighborhood after having Escaped His Confinement, and Tara talk about feet. This is not a joke.
ALRIGHT
we all know and love polygon’s unraveled series, but you know what else deserves attention? brian david gilbert’s original content!! ive seen people recommend different shows and things that he’s done replying to other posts but haven’t seen a masterlist of everywhere you can find his stuff, so here it is (including links!) :
HIS PERSONAL CHANNEL
a collection of mostly short surreal humor videos with a couple series thrown in for spice.
my personal favorites: how to make jorts, the series Dances Moving (only a ~25 minute series but a true gesamtkunstwerk that will punch you in the gut), and Bri and Jo’s Tryin’ Show (aka what evolved into lmam a few years later. if you look in the descriptions after episode two, you’ll find the link to the full streams!!)
LET’S MAKE A MUSIC
a wonderful series of 30-minute comedy podcasts where Brian, his sister Laura Kathryn Gilbert, and their roommate Jonah Scott take suggestions from twitter users and use them to a write a new song every week! they’re currently on a hiatus (might be coming back at some point?) but there are 41 episodes to feed the content hunger
my personal favorite episodes: Thankstaking with Mr. Dad (2), Smooth as Wax (5), and Horsecar (34). find their music here on bandcamp where you can download the songs for $1 each or $5 for an album to support them
THE ALTOGETHER
a band consisting of bdg, Jonah Scott, and Jonah’s sister Sierra. they recently leaked that they’re releasing an LP soon and ive been thinking about it for days. find their music on youtube (linked above) or spotify. im listening to them while putting together this very long post
my personal favorite songs: Follow Through, Clean Slates State, and Let’s Be Realistic. also every single other song
LESSER KNOWN POLYGON SHOWS
this is last because it’s not necessarily his own content, but content that still deserves attention
Gill & Gilbert: a variety show (sort of) about video games (vaguely) where bdg and Patrick Gill play video games with weird challenges (like having to carry each other when they climb on a colossus in Shadow of the Colossus, or piling bananas on their shoulders while playing Donkey Kong). probably my favorite thing on youtube right now
my personal favorite episodes: the two I just mentioned and cucco nugget feast, though I would recommend watching this in order. they develop a lot of running jokes that are more way fun if you’ve seen it all
Week in Revue: I think one of the first things Brian did for polygon where he rapped/sang about video game news. like most polygon shows, it evolves into a psychological horror. this one I would recommend watching in order as well
Good Cheap Games: only four episodes long but very interesting videos mostly about his thoughts on indie games. a very weird experience as he is outside in one episode, a place I didnt know he was aware of. not listing favorites because there are only four episodes, watch them all
I think that’s everything I know about but if you have anything else, please feel free to add on!
I’ve been sitting on this meme idea for like a day now
can’t wait to do a full listen through of my top 100 songs in order and get to the part where it goes straight from “see the day” to “verbatim”
this screencap had huge meme potential, so i made template out of it
i’m serious! so i suffer from ptsd and as a result get some pretty fun and funky fresh nightmares. i frequently have trouble falling asleep because i’m busy remembering last night’s Fucked Up Shit or wondering what new Fucked Up Shit my brain’s gonna give me tonight. i’m not saying this has cured me- my nightmares still exist, trust me- but it’s made it a lot easier to sleep
step 1. getchurself the entire silo album. it’s on spotify, apple play, and bandcamp! grab it real quick. make sure it’s not on shuffle. u got it? good
step 2. at your desired time play the album starting from decatur street. don’t worry if you’re not sleepy yet or if you’re restless.
step 3. use the first 3 songs to get grounded. pull the blanket over your shoulder so you don’t get cold. take a deep breath. get your cat to stop turning your desk chair into a fillet. remember that you forgot your retainer. if you’ve settled in and brown of gold isn’t over, focus on the background of the songs- jonah and brian and sierra are masterminds with layering. have you noticed the tambourine in ladybug yet? no? notice it.
step 4. use the next 6 songs to sleep. they’re quieter and calmer, and still have enough background that if your brain runs off with something, you can redirect your attention to focusing on every note in the alto line from follow through or the bassline in bigger sky. count along with the stupid slow 3/4 time in 10/31. if your brain works best with a goal (like mine does,) try to be asleep by the end of “must be a dream.” it helps me to convince myself to stay still and keep my eyes shut that way.
step 5. and hey, if you aren’t asleep by track 10, you’ll probably end up crying yourself to sleep with see the day anyway, so there’s always that! i’ve personally never made it that far and it’s been a week or so.
anyway the only downside of this i’ve found is that i’ve very quickly familiarized myself with tracks 1-7 while i still dont know all the words to newton’s first? but thats like. minor stuff. i have it on good authority this works with anxiety-related insomnia too (and maybe with regular insomnia? i dunno! go find out)
now good night, everyone, and i hope this helps!
