yes i am treating the characters like my own meat puppets with different personalities, bodies, opinions, and talents than the original. No I will not just make my own story, Are you crazy?
“ships should at least make sense.” no. ships can make sense, sure. but they’re just fictional characters we play with for fun. they’re fantasies, not a fucking thesis paper. so no, they don’t always have to make sense. they just have to make you happy (or horny).
let people enjoy (fictional) things however they want to enjoy.
honestly, this kind of motivation hits different fr

sister, i’m not much a poet, but a criminal / and you never had a chance
Looky here!
I enjoy the different dynamics between each one of them so much that I can't bear to split them up. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp all fill such distinct needs for each other, it doesn't work as smoothly if any of them is excluded. (Also, despite calling the quad "East Blue Boys", I absolutely headcanon Sanji as a trans woman post-timeskip.)
Luffy and Zoro are in perfect sync. Almost the same person in different fonts, Zoro's more serious nature keeps Luffy grounded when it's necessary, and Luffy makes Zoro laugh. They fight with one mind, and it's the key to their success.
Luffy and Usopp are best friends. They have the same childlike enjoyment of games, and teasing the others. Luffy's confidence in Usopp means the world to the sniper, and helps him access his inner strength. Luffy thinks Usopp is hilarious, as Usopp's creative side contrasts so sharply with Luffy's straightforwardness.
Luffy and Sanji are weirdly domestic. Sanji craves validation from authority figures, and Luffy is the only one to give it so freely and mean it so fully. And, yes, being the cook inherently gives Sanji a special place in Luffy's heart, but he's in love with the kind soul that refuses to let anyone starve.
Zoro and Usopp compliment each other. While Usopp admires Zoro's determined stoicism, Zoro admires him in return for doing it scared. Zoro isn't one for expressing emotions, and appreciates Usopp's ironic honesty.
Zoro and Sanji are a healthy example of kismeses. Their rivalry drives each of them to higher achievements, and while their banter is full of insults, there's an understood respect. Sanji would die for Zoro as much as any other strawhat, despite how much he'd deny it.
Sanji and Usopp are very sweet. "I loved her to the point of invention," is a quote that reminds me of this ship. Usopp calls out Sanji's mellorine behavior in a much more lighthearted way, and, like Zoro, Sanji learns to trust others with his true feelings in part due to Usopp.
real sanji enthusiasts wouldn’t touch him with a 10 ft pole
