Marketing Research Reports: Being Concise and Complete

When writing your research paper, whether it is for marketing, engineering, or another purpose, there are four keys to follow: be complete, accurate, clear, and concise. A question in my marketing research class that often comes up is how can a paper be complete and accurate, yet concise. The definition of concise is to be selective in the material presented and avoid sharing more information than is necessary to convey your message.

Editing your report to ensure that enough information is there to be complete, yet not over detailed is often hard, as we often have biased interests or desires in the message. However, we must remember that it is not what we want to share, it is what the audience, typically department heads, executives, or prospective clients, wants to hear.  Only keep the information that is needed for the reader. If there are multiple readers, and you have subject matter that would be a difference maker to them, put it into an appendix. An appendix is normally the best place for detailed graphs and tables, unless directly referenced in the report.

There is much more to writing a good research paper, but knowing how to be complete, yet concise is of extreme importance. Review, edit, review again, and edit again. I will personally read aloud my work to not only look for material that can be edited out, but also for dreaded grammar or spelling errors that the automatic checkers do not catch.

The Venice Area Pregnancy Care Center is a non-profit tax exempt charity run entirely by volunteers. Established in 1985 by Bishop Nevins, our goal is to help parents with children that are in need, to provide safer, healthier, and happier lives for their children. This is done by providing the following baby items: previously loved clothing from newborn to size 5T, baby furniture, cribs, swings, high chairs, strollers, and more. We also provide baby food, cereal, and formula. The Venice Area Pregnancy Care Center provides one package of diapers, per child, once every four weeks to the parents. Through grants from local organizations, we are able to provide new car seats also.
