I think this is what's so haunting about banana fish. jk, there are a lot of things that linger when it comes to banana fish. but I think this is what drives the au's where langa and reki or viktor and yuuri are ash and eiji in another life. they crossed oceans to find one another, and found home in another person. where ash (and all associated danger) eventually drew eiji out of his ennui following his retirement and general naïveté, eiji's gentle innocence and compassion (that came without strings) made ash feel safe and loved despite a life riddled with abuse and objectification.
whether you choose to see them as a romantic pairing (vikturi au) or as friends who made one another better through their connection (renga au), the ending they got was heartbreaking. because after everything they survived, everything they sacrificed, having found each other against all odds in the first place - there's no resolution. no happy ending. just more trauma to punctuate a life ensconced in trauma.
ash deserved more. aslan deserved so much more. and he deserved to think that he was worth saving.
"The title of the movie poses an interesting question that is asked time and again throughout: what does it mean to be human? When someone hears the word “monster,” they likely picture an otherworldly, grotesque creature that bears no resemblance to a human. In the beginning of the film, Minato asks his mother if a person would still be themselves if their brain was replaced with a pig’s brain. Saori begs the elementary school administration to respect her as a person as she confronts them about Mr. Hori. More than an attempt to get to the truth of the situation with Minato and Mr. Hori, Monster is a delicate exploration of humanity. It’s easy to call something or someone a monster, because that strips the soul out of the situation. It allows us to separate the darkness that people are capable of from humanity itself, but that’s not the truth. We all have the ability to be awful and good and cruel, but that doesn’t make us monsters, it makes us human." (x)

I'm Hanan Al-Salout, a Palestinian mother from Gaza 🇵🇸
Everything we depend on to survive has collapsed. Our home, my work, and my husband's job. Now we face hunger and cold, while constant bombing threatens our lives every moment. 😓
My little boy, who is 22 months old, is very hungry and cold. We have not had bread or milk for two days, as prices have become unbearable. A bag of flour costs $300, and milk costs $80.
There are days we go to sleep very hungry! 🥺
The flu weakened my child's emaciated body, and the lack of food caused my mother-in-law to suffer from severe anemia, leaving her bedridden unable to move.💔
I cannot describe the feeling of helplessness I experience every day, as I see hunger and disease surrounding my child and my family without having anything to offer them. 😢
We beg you, do not leave us facing this fate alone 🙏😥

Eiji the professional photographer. Let's talk about it!
Though this might be obvious, Eiji's "journaling" is basically through photos. He seems to be the type to take in the moments, than write them down. Along the way, I think he's finding a bit of his place and new found interest in photography. I wonder about what kept Eiji going in that path even after Ash? We see him locking out Ash's photos away for a long time in Garden of Light. If he ever wrote down things still, that would be an interesting idea to take, considering they were always on the go. Probably written stuff during nights, as he looks at the photos he recently have taken.
There's probably him realizing that being an athlete may not be what he wanted in the long run, there's the injury I don't think he has gotten over with because he did took that hard and there wasn't much time to even heal from it from all the events that went down with Ash. Okay maybe he's gotten to terms with it somehow behind the scenes, since being in the USA gave his world a huge unexpected shift.
Going back, it feels like Eiji continued photography as a way to cope, to heal, but definitely with the passion along with it because even he can't even look at Ash's image for a long time. Yet the very image of him transpired a lot of things in him. But of course, I do think Eiji found his footing and desire through this art himself, his eyes always had a thing for things unseen, his eyes are dark of color yet the depth does exist in them. They always have.
On my monthly Banana Fish Reread. Ash’s death was predicted from the very first volume (his life with Eiji was short and happy). I’m gonna be SICK
