but here's what im thinking of in this au:

mike refusing to acknowledge el, distancing himself from the party, when he does return he talks mostly to himself (to will but ofc, will isn't there), mike refusing to know the truth (his memories are repressed), mike who figures everything out in a large flashback given to him by vecna. MIKE WHO CONFRONTS HIS FEELINGS FOR WILL IN THE RAIN FIGHT AS WILL IS JUST THE PERSONIFICATION OF HIS FEELINGS AND HES REALLY YELLING INSIDE HIS MIND

mike made up an elaborate fantasy to escape the fact his best friend died. mike who wants to believe there's someone who helped him get will back. mike who wants to believe there's some irrational explanation to why his friend was taken from him.
