when you're being mean to me, this is who you're being mean to
Niko Sasaki’s death is not inherently tragic because she dies or because it’s sudden, even though it’s upsetting. Dead Boy Detectives is a show about 2 dead boys solving cases mostly centered around other ghosts, death isn’t an end in this world. Edwin even says “Take it from a ghost, no one is ever gone.” The reason her death is so tragic is because she was happy. She had spent so long self isolating in a state of grief because of her father’s passing, avoiding her mother completely. But now she has a support system, friends who love her, she’s even going to reconnect with her mom. She has Edwin and Charles and Crystal and Jenny (with her and Jenny’s bond slowly healing). But it was also these connections that led her to Esther’s home, and led her to her death. All of her newfound joy for life and the potential she had was all taken from her.
Hot take: Actual literary analysis requires at least as much skill as writing itself, with less obvious measures of whether or not you’re shit at it, and nobody is allowed to do any more god damn litcrit until they learn what the terms “show, don’t tell” and “pacing” mean.
