Was There Once Life On Mars?  Our Perseverance Rover Aims to Find Out

Our Perseverance mission is set to launch on Thursday, July 30 and could help answer many longstanding astrobiology questions about Mars. The mission will deliver our Perseverance rover to the Martian surface, and this powerful rover is equipped with a multitude of tools to study the planet’s environment and to answer questions about whether or not the Red Planet could have had life in the past.

In preparation for launch, our Astrobiology Program is releasing a new update to Issue #2 of the graphic history series, Astrobiology: The Story of our Search for Life in the Universe. This new, fourth edition tells the tale of our exploration of Mars in relation to astrobiology.

The history of our exploration of Mars is full of struggle and triumph. Mars is a dangerous and difficult planet to visit, with frigid temperatures, damaging dust storms, low gravity, and a thin atmosphere. Despite the challenges, NASA missions have opened our eyes to a world that was much more Earth-like in its past, with environments that contained all the necessary conditions for life as we know it.

Issue #2 tells the complete history of our endeavours on Mars, from the Mariner missions to Viking and Pathfinder to Curiosity. In this fourth edition, you’ll find  details on the Perseverance rover and its journey to search for ancient signs and signatures of life that could once and for all tell us whether or not life gained a foothold on the ancient Red Planet.

Perseverance will also drill into Martian rocks and collect samples that will one day be returned to Earth by a future Mars Sample Return mission. The samples will be stored in special containers and carefully ‘cached’ in a location on Mars where they will be easily accessible for retrieval. These samples will allow astrobiologists to perform detailed experiments that robots are not yet able to undertake remotely.

The sky was blood red and the fumes of gas were in the air as I ran screaming for my friends name.

Hoping no PLEADING that he will come rescue me from this...THIS NIGHTMARE.

I hear screams and gasps of pain as I drew near the settlement camp yelling for not just my friend but for the Chief.

“GUS! GUS! ABE! ANYONE!!” I screamed only to see my name being called in a distance. I run at full speed towards Alex.

“ALEX! Thank fuck your alive, where’s Gus?!” Alex signs that he’s in the Medbay. “THANK GOD! Alex stay safe okay?” I say as I bolt for the Medbay, Alex signs “Good Luck” and disappears back into the well hidden bunker.

If you don’t know what’s going on this is the year of 2220 where the world has gone to shit. You think the pandemic was bad? 200 years later there will be a war that will literally destroy Earth. Great.

The thought of the world being fucked I toss aside for now and run into the bushes yell “LIBERTY FOR LAND!” And get immediately sucked into the ground.

I then get plopped on to the metal like floor with a loud CLANK! Where people barely noticed as they scramble and panic as the alarms blast loud and clear that shit is about to go down.

I yell for Gus and Abe as I get onto my feet and run through the giant underground base, dodging scientists, doctors, nurses and normal citizens young and old.

For the last 50 years a War has started between Human Kind and The Reptilian Republic. You heard that right, the Reptilian Republic! 200 years ago those stories and myths of creatures like Mermaids or Bigfoot or any kind of cryptic? They exist...more or less.

Turns out, these creatures were either government experiments gone terribly wrong or were a evolution mistake of sorts...The Reptilian Republic were descendants of Dinosaurs or something I have no fucking clue even though I lived through these events, fucking hell Chris...I didn’t mean for-

I was watching some clips of Ducktales, as you do, when I stumbled on Storkules? (I think that’s how u spell it) being overly sweet and clingy to our boy, Donald.

LIKE- HE LEGIT SAID “What of mY DONALD?!” When the world was ending in season 2 and he legit CARESSED DONALD when him and Huey and Louie and Scrooge were stuck on an island.

(I forgot to add that the bro legit was always so supportive and proud every time Donald did something, like get u a man like that-)

Talking ⭐️ Stars

I like looking at the stars.

It ain’t a unique hobby but to me it’s a very special kinda hobby.

When I was younger I grew up in a city. The street lights were my stars and as a kid the sirens of police cars or an ambulance sirens would lul me to sleep...they still do sometimes!

I was a independent child. Two hardworking parents who never had that much time for me. Still they loved me...I think.

One time my mom came into my room one night and hugged me until I fell asleep, around that time it was when my parents marriage had some cracks and they wanted to fill them.

She hugged me, she told me how much she loved me...and that she was sorry. I was 14 when she did that. She said sorry that she was around, like she was around but not you know AROUND.

She says that she regrets not spending that much time with me when I was younger. Instead having our service dog do all that. I had a service dog as a kid...why? Eh, I don’t really like talking about it.

But when I was a tween and a teen it was hard to get out of bed...hard to eat, hard to take care of myself. I wanted to disappear. A couple of times I almost did.

But Pico helped me. He was a very polite doggo. He always wanted cuddles and always wanted to help me out....especially after a anxiety attack.

I’m still recovering. I’m still trying to believe my mothers words, that I matter and that I’m loved by her and my dad.

My dad..He died when I was 18 years old. It was a car accident. It was before my birthday and he said that he wanted to make up for not being there for me when I was a kid and says that not that I’m a adult that we should try rekindle our Father/Child relationship.

He was gonna give me a surprise gift...he wanted to take me to Japan. He and Mom soMeHOw knew I loved anime and always wanted to move to Japan. He was gonna take me there.

Before he died.

It was hard. My entire life has been pretty hard.

Coming out as non-binary to my parents made it less hard. They knew I was not their son nor daughter, I was their child. They loved me for who I am.

My friends didn’t have a positive reaction. Still addressing me as “Corbin” then “Jay”. I had it and just cut them off. I realized on how toxic they became. They all gossiped and just said terrible things I dare not repeat.

But now...I’m passed that. I’m Jay Garcia. I’m 23 years old and I’m a artist who loves anime and painting. I love the stars.

Someday...I’m going to be there.

Her delicate hand touched my cheek.

I flinch and move away to the corner.

I look up at this goddess, wondering what the hell she wanted.

As I flinched her hand coiled to her chest, her flowing orange hair and her glistening blue eyes face me.

She looked disappointed at my reaction.

I try give her my fiercest gaze and turn my eyes away from her, can she just leave me alone already?

I heard her soft footsteps come closer towards my direction but then they stop.

She’s hesitant.

I look back up at her, ignoring her elegant dressing and what she had in her other hand to her blue eyes.

It was a mixed of “should I?” And doubt. I seen those eyes before so many times, in my friends eyes, my mothers eyes...and my dads eyes.

They all were hesitant. To me. The runt, the fowl creature. The dirty dog.

I was better off alone. So no one could ever hurt me.

No one can give me that disappointed gaze.

When I looked up at her again, I noticed now...that she was gone.

Leaving behind a basket.

I sigh, like everyone else she left.

At least she gave me a basket...or goodies I hope?

Then again she looked like high nobility or something maybe there was gold or-

What in the world?

What is this? A trick?

The Knight loomed over the kingdom it watched over. Wishing to be apart of that world again. To be just that as their namesake…a Knight.

Dedicated to protecting the people of this realm, of this kingdom of green and white. How the trees give shade to the people, how the white ivory roads could be seen when the Knight tilted their head just right, where the run shined on the surface. Up above in this lonely castle, all the Knight could ever do was watch. And wait…wait, then wait some more…until time ran out of sand.

The Knight hated just being in the castle, the castle was fine on its own, a beautiful, big structure which dares almost touch the heavens if they dare exist, it’s a beautiful home…just not their home. Their world, not something they were made for, not something they ever wanted. They wanted to be down and there and protect, to be connected to the nature and to its people. Yet here the Knight was. Looming, like a guard dog.

The more they watched the people the less alone the Knight felt. No one else was here but them. No maids or staff, no butlers or ladies in waiting, not even another guard or even royalty…the Knight was all alone in the abandoned spire that reached to the clouds above. All alone. Protecting what? They sighed as they moved from the balcony to the throne room. Protecting their friends last wish.

“I know this is too much to ask of you, please protect the castle…protect it until I return. I can’t explain it all my dear Knight. Just please. I beg of you, protect it with all your might and will.”

Damn them and their loyalty as the Knight would’ve been gone long ago without it, they’re bored out of their mind and sad at being away from what they love so much, which was life itself. Yet, they know that protecting this place would protect what they truly love. Though this friend was quite a handful, they spoke no lies before.

Yet as the Knight waited. The Knight felt more alone, yet also comfortable here, but there was always a want, a need to go home.

“Just a bit longer.” The Knight said, waiting and waiting as they sat at the stairs leading up to the ivory throne. Waiting, waiting…waiting.
