I saw this tiktok on twitter and I just had to 😂

Watching Code Lyoko is sort of surreal because of how much technology has advanced since this very technology-focused cartoon premiered in 2003.

the virtual world of Lyoko houses two artificial intelligence beings, one with fully human behaviors, and one with the capability to affect things in the real world that aren’t even mildly electronic. (episode 1, a giant teddy bear. why XANA)

image
image

Three children regularly fully digitize themselves to enter and exit Lyoko without any negative side effects to their mental or physical well being… aside from that time one of them fell into the “digital sea” and just. ceased to exist. Was there a body? nobody knows

XANA has taken control of trains, a government sattelite with a goddamn laser capable of targeting an individual person and pulverizing everything within a ten-foot radius of its target, (why does that even exist?) clouds of several different kinds of toxic gasses, a swarm of bees, the previously mentioned giant teddy bear, a living replica of one of the main characters, all with decidedly malicious intent. (plus that whole thing with William….)

But, it still seems to obey video game type logic, such as only deploying a limited number of minions, all with a clearly visible weak spot.

image

The heroes are always alerted of XANA’s activity, (directional vibrations on the ground in Lyoko) and always stop it, (deactivating the tower) in the same ways every time.

literal time travel, via the push of a button, voice command, automatic?? it’s really not consistent

but the gang’s computer whiz kid Jeremie’s personal setup looks like this

look at this dinosaur

image

and they all use freaking nokias

image

here we have Ulrich typing in Jeremie’s phone number, from memory, in order to alert him that an evil computer program has taken control of the electrical wiring in the school cafeteria and that they’re all trapped

There’s an episode in which nanobots cause an amnesia epidemic, (I think it’s one of my faves so far) and the next episode begins with Odd talking excitedly about downloading an MP3 file off the web

I haven’t gotten to that episode yet, but I distinctly remember Jeremie exclaiming “I just need a couple more bytes!” and Odd saving the day by closing out a game of Tetris that was running in the background

I remembered it wrong, Yumi was at the computer trying to save Jeremie after he convinced her to try and virtualize him (she messed it up because he didn’t bother to walk her through virtualizing someone step by step) and they needed “a few more bytes” of memory, so Odd plugged Ulrich’s gameboy into the system, which of course fixed the problem somehow. It was definitely Tetris though. He’d been up until 3am playing Tetris the night before. Tetris. Tetris saved Jeremie from deleting himself.

TL;DR: between the conflicting level of often nonsensical technological advancement, (how did a computer program just. make bees) occasionally awkward dubbing, (that was absolutely Ulrich’s voice coming out of Yumi’s mouth. yep. mm-hm. good) rare and often unsettling puns, and Odd’s hair, Code Lyoko is a surreal experience and I recommend it

Foods that could be common for Water Tribesmen, in case anyone needs inspiration:

Meat (eaten dried, smoked, boiled, or frozen) (note: in such harsh environments, wasting tends to be looked down upon, so as many edible parts would be eaten as possible. This would include the tongue, heart, and liver.)

Seal (canon) (also, seal oil as a sauce or condiment)

Chiton (possibly canon depending on how you interpret "sea prunes")

Crab (canon)

Fish (salmon, whitefish, trout), fish eggs

Walrus

Whale/muktuk

Ptarmigan and grouse (possibly canon, depending on how you interpret "arctic hen"), ptarmigan and grouse eggs

Rabit and hare

Caribou

Produce (eaten fresh, added to other foods, or more rarely cooked)

Berries (bluberry, low-bush and high-bush cranberry, salmonberry, cloudberry, wild raspberry, rosehip) (can be made into jam)

Fireweed shoots (roots can be roasted as well, flowers can be made into jelly, leaves can be processed into a tea)

Eskimo potato/masru (just the root, the rest of the plant is poisonous)

Seaweed

Sourdock

Dishes/specially prepared foods

Soups

Akutaq (whipped fat with meat, fish, and/or berries; sometimes sweetened)

Mikigaq (fermented whale meat and muktuk)

Tepa (fermented fish head)

Fry bread

Pancakes

Imported foods (may have been intercepted by the Fire Nation navy and thus even more scarce at some points in the South Pole)

Cereal grains/flour

Yeast

Dairy products

Tea

Hardtack crackers

Sugar

Seasonings like garlic, pepper, ginger, etc (salt can be gathered from seawater)

Vegetables like carrots, cabbage, onions, etc; and fruits like pears, stonefruits, and citrus (likely dried or otherwise preserved ahead of time or soon upon importing because repeated freezing and thawing causes faster spoilage)

Meats like chicken, beef, and pork

Types of oil that don't come from animal fat

“you’re not here to slay me and save the princess?” “No I want to join you guys. A pretty princess with an awesome dragon in an isolated castle away from society? That’s a pretty sweet gig.”

It’s Hama’s fault Kya is dead

This is one of my favorite theories behind atla and I wanted to share my own breakdown of it.

SO the raids on the SWT began in 40 AG. They continued until each and every waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe had been captured. (Note: captured)

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead
It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

Worth noting is that Hama refers to herself as the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe.

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead
It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

Here’s where the conspiracy gets juicy. Hama was the only one who managed to escape. She created bloodbending to get out of the prison. And she says herself that she’s the only one who escaped. This could be for one of two reasons:

All of the other prisoners had already succumb to the conditions or been killed

The remaining waterbender prisoners were murdered after Hama’s escape

The second option is more plausible. Hama displayed a dangerous, powerful, unknown form of waterbending and overtook a Fire Nation guard’s body. She had him unlock her cell and fled. If there were remaining waterbenders in the prison they would have been killed out of fear once Hama escaped.

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

They Fire Nation couldn’t risk anyone else in their prison possessing this power. So they were all murdered because of Hama’s escape.

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead
It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

Look at Hama’s reaction to hearing that the raids continued. A kind of casual “oh, you poor things.” Hama knew that the raids continued because she escaped. All of the waterbenders had already been caught! The only waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe that was known at that time to be free or alive was Hama.

And she knew better than to return to her home, where they were sure to come looking for her. She stayed and hid right under their noses because she knew they were going to tear the world apart trying to track her down. She was too dangerous.

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

When Yon Rha comes to the Southern Water Tribe in 94 AG Katara is still a child. Their tribe has been in shambles for years at this point. Katara is the tribe’s last hope and they’re a tiny tribe at that point in time. Do you honestly think that word of a child waterbender would have made way to the Fire Nation?

Do you think that the Water Tribe would ever release that information willingly? I don’t. I think that the Southern Raiders had no idea that another waterbender had been born into the Southern Water Tribe.

Why else would Yon Rha have accepted that an adult was the waterbender he was looking for? The intel didn’t say that a new waterbender was born, the intel said that there’s one waterbender left. The Fire Nation already knows about the last waterbender of the SWT. She escaped. And they’re still trying to find her.

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

The Fire Nation is adamant about finding the last waterbender because they’re looking for Hama. Hama, who can control people’s bodies. Hama, who managed to escape a high-security Fire Nation prison without any water. Hama, the only waterbender to best the Fire Nation. And the only one left.

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

Kya offers herself up as prisoner to Yon Rha. Because she knows that the past raids meant that the Southern Raiders took the waterbenders prisoner. But that has changed.

It’s Hama’s Fault Kya Is Dead

Why would their procedure have changed? Why did they stop taking waterbenders as prisoners? Because of Hama. They stopped taking waterbenders prisoner after Hama’s escape.

Tl;dr the Southern Raiders were never looking for Katara, they were looking for Hama.

I feel like when I say ‘relatable’ what I really mean is ‘resonant.’ I don’t want characters who I feel are like me, I want characters who have emotions so strong I can feel them through the page.

There’s a reason a sewing kit includes scissors, a wood shop has a saw, and a kitchen is full of knives. In order to build something, to create something on purpose, you have to be prepared to cut away what’s extra. A bolt of cloth does not a blanket make, a piece of wood a shelf, nor a loaf of bread a sandwich. When you snip off frayed bits of string, cut the wood into shape, or slice the end off a loaf of bread you are creating, with the act of removal, something closer to what you desire.

Now let’s say you’re not sewing a blanket, you’re not building a shelf, not making a sandwich. Let’s say you’re crafting a life in which you are happy. You will end up removing things. You’ll leave partners, stop talking to family members, let go of friends. You’ll move apartments, lose jobs, change wardrobes. And you will feel their absence. You’ll look at the scraps of cloth, the odd angles of wood, the stale end of the loaf. But that cloth couldn’t keep you warm and that tiny corner of wood can’t store books. You wouldn’t be full from that little bit of bread or happy with that person. In the art of creating there is the act of removal and it is essential.
