Hiii Rae!!! So I Wanted To Ask You This Since It Sound Like Ur Well Versed On This Topic And You Seem

hiii rae!!! so i wanted to ask you this since it sound like ur well versed on this topic and you seem really smart and all, but do u have any recs on what to read for topics like transmisogyny or bioessentialism? i’ve been meaning to read more abt it but I have no idea where to begin

hi!! i am definitely always learning more myself but i would be happy 2 share some recs!!

starting off with bioessentialism:

performative acts and gender constitution, by judith butler, is like. one of the most foundational texts re: gender as a social construct. it can be a bit dense to tackle if you're just diving into this stuff so i recommend taking it slow and really trying to parse through what they're saying--a lot of people sort of skim through this and just take away "gender is a performance!" which at best is a pretty broad simplification and at worst ends up being like a direct contradiction to what butler is saying lol

the logic of gender is another article that is, again, very dense but a very in-depth historical materialist analysis specifically looking at the development of gender as a social construct tied to capitalist economic structures

trans liberation: beyond pink or blue by leslie feinberg is definitely an easier read and another good place to start if you're looking for a text that challenges sex + gender categories

regarding transmisogyny more specifically:

whose feminism is it anyway? by emi koyama is an essay breaking down the logical incoherency of trans exclusionary feminism

fighting fascism in feminism by chanelle gallant is another, more recent article also discussing how trans exclusion is antithetical to feminism

whipping girl by julia serano is where the term "transmisogyny" was first coined

on liking women by andrea long chu is an essay that i personally love bc of the way it shifted my own thinking regarding sex, gender, and desire. chu's writing tends to ruffle feathers but i really like it; i'd also recommend her book females if u dig on liking women

+ if anyone has any recs they wanna add please do!!

Life is just so much better when you’re out and about. Walking around a shop, grabbing lunch at your favorite restaurant, a cold beverage of your choice as both hydration and accessory, the fresh air and loud busy surroundings of a world constantly moving forward. I feel like the plastic bag camcorder freak from American Beauty. The pure poetry of it all.

What people think why i became a bookbinder: Oh she wants to explore her artistic horizon with those pretty leather bound books of hers. She even gives them out as gifts to her friends. It most likely helps her with anxiety or maybe she just wanted a more special costume made notebook.

Why I actually became a bookbinder: I just illegally downloaded and printed out several of my favourite fanfics and books and started binding them into books cuz I love reading them but looking at screens for too long gives me headaches.

Conveying Worldbuilding Without Exposition!

image

(As requested by both an anon and @my-words-are-light)

One of the hardest parts of writing speculative fiction is presenting readers with a world that’s interesting and different from our own in a way that’s both immersive and understandable at the same time.

Thankfully, there are a few techniques that can help you present worldbuilding information to your readers in a natural way, as well as many tricks to tweaking the presentation until it’s just right.

Four basic techniques:

1. The ignorant character.

By introducing a character who doesn’t know about the aspects of the world building you’re trying to convey, you can let the ignorant character voice the questions the reader naturally wants to ask. Traditionally, this is seen when the protagonist or (another character) is brought into a new world, society, organization. In cases where that’s the natural outcome of the plot, and the character has a purpose in the story outside of simply asking questions, it can be pulled off just fine. But there’s another aspect to this which writers don’t often consider:

Every character is your ignorant character.

In a realistic world, no person knows everything. Someone will be behind on the news. Someone won’t know all the facts. Many, many someones won’t have studied a common part of their society simply because they aren’t large part of that fraction or don’t have the time for it.

Instead of inserting an ignorant character and creating a stiff and annoying piece of expository dialogue, find the character already existing in the story who doesn’t know about the thing being learned.

2. Conflicting opinions.

A fantastic way to convey detailed world building concepts is to have characters with conflicting viewpoints discuss or argue about them. Unless you’re working with a brainwashed society, every character should hold their own set of religious, political, and social beliefs.

Examples of this kind of dialogue:

“how to read more” “how to read faster” “how to read daily” STOP STOP stop STOP this is not a competition. read slowly, read when you’re in the right state of mind, really savour it, read for pleasure, read for yourself. don’t read for performance, stats or to compare yourself to others
