Summary: It’s the annual Edenbrook vs Panacea labs baseball game and Casey is forced to stand in for a missing player on the Panacea team – but can she and Ethan save her from an awful date with Declan Nash?

A/n: Most people know about their relationship, aside from a few interns and attendings – which explains the reactions at the end. Plus with all the angst from the first 2 chapters of book 2, I thought I’d treat us all to some semi-domestic fluff.

“If you want to play Rookie grab a mitt, but I won’t lose” Ethan said as he stepped closer to Casey, looking down at her as she titled her head with a smirk.

“You don’t think going on a date with Nash without taking out his kneecaps, takes game?”

“You got game?” he asked matching her expression, a competitive look in his eyes and an impressed smirk on his lips.

“A little, let’s play, do the honours Elijah” she smirked as Elijah threw the bat up allowing her to catch it mid-air. Her eyes locking with Ethan’s in a silent challenge, one he willingly stepped up to as his hand circled the bat on top of hers, she scoffed and simply placed her hand on top of his, her fingers deliberately brushing his hand in an effort to make him  lose focus. He took it one further and let his fingers rest on her wrist before wrapping around the bat, his eyes looking over her. She simply smirked as her hand rested on the top of the bat, as both teams cheered and ‘ooed’ as they pulled apart.

“Game on Ramsey”.

“You’re on Vatore” were the only words they exchanged as they broke apart and Casey took her stand on the pitchers square as Ethan limbered up and got into the position with the bat, ready and awaiting Casey’s pitch.

Hey oh, play ball Hey, hey, oh

Hey, batter, batter Hey battter, batter swing I’ve got to just do my thing

It came a lot quicker than what Ethan was expecting as he completely missed the first hit, ‘strike one’ the catcher called out as Casey got ready for the second pitch, this time he hit the ball pitch-perfect, the ball went flying almost out of play as her team tried to get it back to her as quickly as physically possible. By this time Ethan had managed to run a home run, as he moved past Casey he smirked ‘better luck next time’ before he continued onto to the next base.

The suns rays passed through the air perfectly as they all swapped roles, Declan stepped up to pitch as Ethan batted, Casey couldn’t see this ending well as the two sized each other up and shared an unspoken conversation about HER as the game went on. By gods, if Ethan was going to allow his rookie to go on a date with Panaceas known creep and by the look of it neither was Casey as she distracted Nash with a small barely noticeable flirtatious gesture, which allowed Ethan to get him out in three strikes. They shared a small nod and cheer as the panacea team booed and called out foul and yet their pleas were soon squashed down as Naveen – the head of Edenbrook’s baseball team – simply reassured them it was a fair ball and tossed a thankful look to Casey who waved up at him happily and gave him a wave before jumping back into the game, getting ready to switch positions.

It wasn’t long before the teams swapped positions and the score was 45:55 a ten-point distance between Panacea and Edenbrook, Casey looked up at the board with a pleaful sigh, desperate for Edenbrook to win not only for their sake but for the sake of funding. She looked up just in time to see the ball flying at her as Esme bowled, and yet Casey didn’t have no bat to hand in order to stop it in time, her instincts took over as she put her arms in front of her face and ducked out of the way, calling out for all of her baseball team to watch out as the ball came hurdling towards Declan’s shoulder. Of course, he was far too obsessed too with himself to listen to reason, as a deafening crack and curse came from his direction. “Are you okay?” she asked, stupid question but it’s human nature, as she paused the game and wandered over to him.

“Do I look okay, your stupid intern just broke my shoulder!” he snapped at her as he put a hand over his shoulder, but Casey grabbed his wrist to stop him.
