The Modern Sapphire Tiara/George VI Sapphire Tiara/The Belgian Sapphire Tiara
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝒪𝓌𝓃𝑒𝓇𝓈/𝒲𝑒𝒶𝓇𝑒𝓇𝓈:
♕ 1858 - 1924: Princess Louise of Belgium: It is unknown how the Princess acquired the necklace.
♕ 1947 to Present: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: Queen Elizabeth added the tiara separate from the rest of the George VI Sapphire Jewelry she owns. She used the George VI Sapphire jewels (which she received in 1947 as a wedding gift from her father) to create the tiara in 1963.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is unknown about the date the original necklace was created, but the tiara was made in 1963 by Queen Elizabeth II.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before the tiara was created into a tiara, the jewels were used as a necklace or as a dress ornament for Princess Louise of Belgium. When looking at the design of the tiara, you can see the point of the tiara which is the sign of a converted necklace. The jewels stand upright on the tiara, which would have been seen as drops on a necklace.
♕ Princess Louise of Belgium was a scandalous figure among the Belgium Royal Family. She had multiple lovers & left her husband, which left her in financial troubles due to being estranged from her family. She had to sell all her jewels to help her financial debt. The necklace ended up in the general marketplace, which is when it was acquired for the queen & turned from a necklace into a tiara.
♕ Besides the Tiara as a wedding gift from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II & His Royal Highness Prince Andrew The Duke of York, they also bought Sarah a suite of diamond jewels in a modern floral design from Garrard. The set consists of a necklace, a bracelet, and a pair of earrings. The set was valued at around $500,000.
♕ Upon arrival to the wedding, the Bride was wearing a wreath of flowers atop her veil. By removing both the veil & the wreath of flowers, while signing the register and revealing the Tiara underneath, symbolized that she wanted to enter the Abbey as a commoner and leave as a Duchess.
♕ The Duchess keeps the Tiara in her bedside table.
♕ Original: The Tiara first made an appearance in 1818, by Her Royal Highness Augusta The Dowager Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The Tiara was given to her as a wedding gift from her family.
♕ The New Tiara: Designed in 1913 by Her Majesty Queen Mary but was created by The House of Garrard.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝒟𝑒𝓈𝒾𝑔𝓃:
The Tiara features a Diamond and Pearl tiara with Lover's Knot Motifs. The lover’s knot motif was very popular in the nineteenth century; the knots are the pretzel-like elements at the top of the tiara - the part from which the pendant pearls are suspended. Originally Mary’s Tiara was topped with a row of upright pearls, which made the tiara taller & grander than the version we currently see on the current Duchess of Cambridge. The pearls are the same pearls that once sat on The Girls Of Great Britain And Ireland Tiara, but they could removed off the Lover’s Knot. When Queen Mary died, the upright pearls were removed off the tiara. Lovers Knot bows were part of the design of the tiara, which was repeated along the entire length of the tiara, and from which originated two drop-shaped pearls, one hanging down and the other rising up like a spike.

♕ It is Kate’s most worn Tiara for Royal Events. Her second favorite is the Lotus Flower Tiara, which she has worn 2 times.
♕ Diana was not allowed to keep the Tiara after her divorce from Charles. She did get to keep all of her other jewelry gifts though.
♕ Before the Original Lover’s Knot Tiara was bought at an auction in 1981, no one knew what happened to the tiara after Her Royal Highness Princess Militza of Montenegro died. It is believed she sold it to a jewelry company right before she died.
