Christmas & New Years at Sandringham House

image

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝒯𝒜𝑒 𝐻𝒟𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓇𝓎
Sandringham House is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Country Estate in Norfolk. In the 1960′s, Queen Elizabeth’s & her children would celebrate Christmas at Windsor Castle. Starting in 1988, Windsor Castle was being rewired, so the Royals traveled to Sandringham for Christmas. The Sandringham Estate is set on 24 Hectares (59.3 Acres) of Garden.
Every year before the stay at Sandringham begins, Queen Elizabeth takes an empty pre-scheduled carriage of the train to from London to King’s Lynn Station in Norfolk. In the Carriage is Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, & Immediate Staff. The rest of the British Royal Family will arrive at a specific time on Christmas Eve, depending on their status. Junior Members arrive first & Important Members (Prince Charles & Camilla, The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge & their children, etc.) arrive last.
image
After all family members have arrived at Sandringham, the Estate can be quite crowded. Due to The Sandringham Estate not being as large as other royal family residences, some family members end up staying in the staff quarters. Staff will transfer from their normal quarters & live in either estate cottages or surrounding villages.
𝑀𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒟𝑒𝒹 𝒞𝑜𝓊𝓅𝓁𝑒𝓈
When the family arrives to the Sandringham Estate, the only family members invited to Sandringham are Married Couples & children. For example, before William & Catherine were married in 2011, the now Duchess was not allowed to attend Christmas at Sandringham. Mike Tindall (Husband of Zara Tindall) or Jack Brooksbank (Husband of Princess Eugenie) were not invited to Christmas at Sandringham, until they were officially married to their wives. The only Royal Member of the Family who has broken this protocol, is Megan The Duchess of Sussex. She attended Christmas at Sandringham, during the year she became engaged to Prince Harry Duke of Sussex.
The First Royal Christmas Tree was introduced to Sandringham House by Her Majesty Charlotte The Queen. The Tradition was kept going by Her Majesty Victoria The Queen & her husband His Royal Highness Albert Prince Consort. The Tradition of having a Christmas Tree has continued onto this day & Queen Elizabeth will let her grandchildren & great grandchildren help decorate the trees.
The Royal Family has a Large Christmas Tree & also a 30 year old Large Silver Artificial Tree in the Dining Room at Sandringham. All the Christmas decorations  stay up until February to honor Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI who died on Wednesday, February 6th, 1952.
The day of Christmas Eve, each member of the Royal Family will lay out the presents they bought on the trestle table. The gifts are then exchanged during the Afternoon Teatime, when Prince Philip says everyone is allowed to open their gifts. The British Royal Family do have a sense of humor when it comes to giving each other gifts. Members will sometimes give each other joke presents! Example: Kate Middleton once gave Harry a “Grow Your Own Girlfriend” one year! Harry also gave his grandmother a shower cap with the saying “Ain’t life a b**ch.”
♕ 𝐹𝒶𝒞𝓉: Her Majesty does her Christmas Gift & Decorations Shopping at Harrods! The store would stay open after hours so that Queen Elizabeth could shop on her own.
♕ 𝐹𝒶𝒞𝓉: The family’s favorite treat during their Afternoon Christmas Eve Teatime is the Jam Penny Sandwiches. The Jam Penny Sandwiches are jam filled sandwiches that are cut into circles the size of an old English penny. (Size Reference Below)
Besides family, The Royal Staff are even given Christmas gifts from Queen Elizabeth & Prince Philip! The week before Christmas, the staff are taken into one of the State Apartments, the Head of Staff announces his annual report of their yearly performance, & the staff are then given their gift. The staff can choose between receiving a gift token or a book token, but in order to receive their gift they must be qualified. The qualification is to been in service of the royal family for over a year & their value increases every year, they serve the royal family. Junior Staff are given a token worth £28 ($36.01) & the token increases up to £35 ($45.02). Besides tokens, the staff is also given Christmas puddings with a greeting card all paid for by the Queen. 1,500 total Christmas puddings are made & distributed.
After eating a filling Christmas Day Lunch, the family has 2 choices of After Lunch Activities: Exercise on the Estate or Putting Together Puzzles. The choice to exercise, is to help members digest their food faster & prepare them for Christmas Dinner. The choice to put together Jigsaw Puzzles, is a fun hobby of the Queen’s & the children love it too!
𝒞𝒜𝒶𝓇𝒶𝒹𝑒𝓈
The Royal Family loves Charades! Every year after their Christmas Dinner, the family will get together to play a game of charades with each other. They’ll stay up late into night playing because nobody retires to be before the Queen does.
On the night of Christmas Eve, the Queen hosts a Black Tie Formal Christmas Eve Dinner. During the dinner, everyone enjoys a drink: The Queen will drink A Zaza Gin Cocktail, Prince Charles will drink a Cherry Brandy, & Prince William & Prince Harry will drink Sandringham Apple Cider.
Every year on Christmas Morning, the British Royal Family attends the Christmas Church Service at St. Mary Magdalene Church. The entire family walks together in a group & is led by Prince Philip but Her Majesty The Queen, is driven in a car to the church. The family attends a private service just for them at 9 A.M & there is a public service at 11 A.M for anyone who wants to attend. For the Public Service, attendees must pass a security check several months before December.
𝒞𝒜𝓇𝒟𝓈𝓉𝓂𝒶𝓈 𝐿𝓊𝓃𝒞𝒜 & 𝒟𝒟𝓃𝓃𝑒𝓇
Just like the rest of the families around the world who celebrate Christmas, the British Royal Family have Christmas meals together. Before the family arrives at Sandringham, each member has to practice their French because the Lunch & Dinner menus are in French. Guests are allowed to bring a dish if they choose to.
♕ 𝐿𝓊𝓃𝒞𝒜: After a morning of reflecting at Church, the family will join together for a big lunch. The Lunch includes Salad with Shrimp or Lobster, Turkey (2 Turkeys that are each 25 pounds), Parsnips, Carrots, Brussel Sprouts, & Christmas Pudding with Brandy Butter.
♕ 𝒟𝒟𝓃𝓃𝑒𝓇: After a long day of festivities, the family will once again join together for a big dinner. Unlike the Christmas Lunch where you order your food, Christmas Dinner is a buffet! Dinner includes Rib Roast, Turkey, Ham, & other delicious dishes. Before dinner begins & the family goes inside the dining room, the senior chef must carve whatever meat is served, present the Queen with a glass of Whiskey, & the Queen says a toast to the family & staff. Children are not allowed at Dinner until they are of proper age of behavior, so the young ones are sent off to the nursery.
Beginning in 1952, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has given an Annual Christmas broadcast to all of the Commonwealth. In her broadcast, the Queen will reflect on the past year & talk about what is to come in the future for her family & for the Commonwealth. The broadcast were not televised like they are today until 1957 & are pre-recorded in a Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace just a few days before Christmas. Every year, the family will join together in a sitting room after lunch (The broadcast takes place at 3PM) to watch the Queen’s broadcast together.
Christmas Cards have been a long standing tradition in the Royal Family for years! Every year, Queen Elizabeth & Prince Phillip send around 850 hand signed cards, but they sign the cards early in the summer. Each couple of the royal family will send their own personalized cards, like the one of the Cambridges pictured down below.
The Death of His Majesty King George V
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

𝒟𝑒𝒞𝓁𝒟𝓃𝒟𝓃𝑔 𝐻𝑒𝒶𝓁𝓉𝒜

George V had developed a lot of health problems after the First World War & it took a toll on him. George was injured on Thursday, October 28th, 1915 when he was thrown from a horse & he also developed Chronic Bronchitis from his heavy smoking addiction. 10 years later in 1925, he was sent on a cruise to the Mediterranean which was used to help him recuperate.

image

3 years later in 1929, he developed an illness called Sepsis, which is a life-threatening condition for when the body’s response to an infection causes injuries to both the tissues & the organs. The King’s body never recovered from years of illness & injury, so in last year of life, he was administered oxygen.

image

 6 years later, when George’s sister Her Royal Highness The Princess Victoria died, it sent the King into a deep state of depression. 1 year after his sister’s death on January 15th, 1936, George went to his bedroom at Sandringham House, complaining of a cold. The cold turned the King’s body for the worst, as he became weaker & would drift in & out of consciousness. George’s nurse Catherine Black & physician Lord Dawson of Penn, gave him a sedative the night of his death which consisted of 3/4 gram of morphine & 1 gram of cocaine. The family did not approve of the injection but also did not want the King’s death to be painful & slow.

Declining Health & Lethal Injection

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝐹𝓊𝓃𝑒𝓇𝒶𝓁
As the King’s health declined, multiple close sources of the King’s came forward with updates on his decline.
The first source was Prime Minister Baldwin who wrote, “Each time he became conscious it was some kind inquiry or kind observation of someone, some words of gratitude for kindness shown. But he did say to his secretary when he sent for him: "How is the Empire?" An unusual phrase in that form, and the secretary said: "All is well, sir, with the Empire", and the King gave him a smile and relapsed once more into unconsciousness.”
The second source was Lord Dawson of Penn (The King’s Physician) who issued a bulletin that had “The King's life is moving peacefully towards its close,” written on it. Lord Dawson also kept updates in journals with the King’s last words written in it which were “God Damn You,” which was said to his nurse Catherine Black. He also said he wanted the injection to happen at night, so that the death of the King could make the morning edition of British Newspaper The Times.
British Pathé News announced the King’s death, the next morning & described the King as “More than a King, a father of a great family.” BBC Studios was next for the broadcast, as German composer Paul Hindemith & English Conductor Adrian Boult along with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, performed a Mourning Music that evening.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6y1KYItRzQ (British Pathé News Broadcast)
The night before the funeral, the King’s sons’ His Royal Highness Edward The Duke of Windsor, His Majesty King George (Albert) VI, & His Royal Highness Henry The Duke of Gloucester, mounted the Vigil of the Princes guard at the Catafalque. The sons did this in respect to their father who was now gone. The King was lied in state at Westminster Hall but was interred at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, January 28th, 1936.
Fashion Rules of the Men of The British Royal Family
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

𝒫𝒶𝓃𝓉𝓈 & 𝒮𝒜𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈

image

Boys never wear pants! When a boy is going through his toddler years, he is never allowed to wear pants. Boys wear smart shorts when attending public events, but don’t were pants until they’re about 8 years old. The tradition of young boys wearing shorts, dates all the way back to the 16th century. This tradition is called the practice of breeching, which is when a toddler grows out of wearing traditional gowns & moves onto wearing breeches.

As British Etiquette Expert William Hanson explained, “Trousers are for older boys & men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent markers that that we have in England. A pair of trousers on a young boy is considered middle class —quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristo or royal would be considered suburban. The usual custom is that a boy graduated to trousers around 8 years old.”

When on a Royal Tour, it is extremely rare to see a royal wearing black as part of their fashion plan. Each royal, must carry a black outfit while traveling outside of the country, in case of an emergency like a family member dying. The black outfit being packed is helpful so that when they arrive back in England, they are dressed appropriately. Outside of a death, wearing black is a major fashion rarity for men. The color is mostly worn on Remembrance Day or in a men’s tux.

Military Uniforms are the most common & customary outfit worn by the men & women of the British Royal Family. They are worn at the most formal of events like Trooping of the Color & Weddings. This has been a tradition since the 19th Century & Her Royal Highness Anne The Princess Royal is the first royal woman to dress in a military uniform since Queen Elizabeth I in 1588.

Examples of Military Uniform Events:

Weddings:

1. Prince William (2011) - Tunic of the Colonel of the Irish Guard, one of two Irish infantry regiments in the British Army. The buttons on William’s tunic were arranged in groups of four to show the Irish Guard as the fourth of the Foot Guards regiments to be established. Over his tunic, William wore his garter sash, garter star, his pilot’s wings (to represent his service in the Royal Air Force), & a Golden Jubilee medal.

2. Prince Harry (2018) - A Single Breasted Frockcoat of the Blues & Royals, a a cavalry regiment & the second most senior regiment in the British Army. Harry wore a major’s uniform instead of a general’s uniform, as Harry is the Captain General of the Royal Marines. The now Duke had to seek approval from the Queen herself for permission to wear the uniform. On his chest, Harry wore pilot’s wings, which represent his time serving in the Army Air Corps. Harry’s trousers, were made from blue and black wool barathea & featured red panelling, a leather strap, & a buckle below the boot traditionally worn when on horseback.

Denim: A non-preferred but not forbidden piece of clothing.

Denim is not seen being worn often by British royal men or women, as its a go-to item when attending events or just being out in public. When choosing to be in a more casual outfit, royals typically go trousers & khaki pants. Days spent in the English countryside are always in a relaxed but polished dress code like Wax Jackets, Tweed Flat Hats, or Wool Coats. Denim is fine, if royals are just walking the grounds of the different estates, like for example if they go walking the dogs for their daily walks. Denim is now typically worn in private at home settings.

It is a rule in most militaries (Australia, Colombian Navy, Finland, India, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Lebanon, Mexico, Nepal, Norway, Pakistan, Royal Life Guards of Denmark, Serbia, South Korea, Sweden, Syria, Turkey, & United States of America: Most of these countries will let the men grow a mustache that is neatly kept but a beard is only allowed to be grown with special permission for health/religion reasons), the mean must be cleaned shaven. With the British Military, as long as the mens facial hair is neat & tidy they are allowed to have facial hair like beards, sideburns, & mustaches. Prince Phillip & Prince Harry, both grew out their facial hair while in service. Queen Elizabeth is not a fan & intensely dislikes facial hair, expecting royal men to remove it sooner than later.

image

You don’t typically see the British Royal Family wearing bright out there colors except for the Queen. When not at a very formal event, the family is generally wearing muted down colors, mostly in a palette of crisp whites, navy blues, or pale grey. Morning Coats are in either black or charcoal color & trousers must be grey but have a checked or striped pattern. Turndown collar shirts must be white or pastel & can be worn with a grey or buff colored waistcoat. Ties must be grey but can be in lighter colors.

Men do follow a dress code for certain types of days. When being out in a more casual setting, royals typically go trouser, cardigans, blazers, polo shirts, button down shirts, & khaki pants.

Days spent in the English countryside are always in a relaxed but polished dress code like Wax Jackets, Tweed Flat Hats, or Wool Coats.

For a Morning Dress Day like Christmas, men will wear a Turndown Collar Shirt, a Tie, a Waistcoat, a Cutaway Tailcoat, & Striped Trousers. A Morning Coat is a single breasted coat with a single button closure & peaked lapel. Turndown Collar Shirts, can be replaced with a single-cuffed shirt worn with a detachable wing collar & a waistcoat. Accessories include top hats, pocket squares, & gloves.

image

For evening formal events, men will wear tuxedo suits.

Each of the royal men have a personal style of their own, that is worked into their everyday wear. These are called Small Accents. For Prince William, it’s his Wellington Boots, for Prince Harry it’s his Persol Sunglasses, & for Prince Charles its locally made attire.
