im so mentally ill about the tragedy of hamlet right now

Yesterday we had a debate about which social media platforms different Hamlet characters would use and this is what we came up with:

Gertrude: is probably on facebook and in several weird parenting forums where she asks for help with her weird son

Hamlet: Tumblr, but like 2012 tumblr where he post pseudo edgy shit. Also he has a secret twitter account which he uses to bitch at Claudius

Horatio: Probably has his own blog or something where he just writes about his life from time to time

Laertes: The king of 08/15 mirror selfies on instagram. He also posts his dietary and work out plans on there

Ophelia: Is not allowed to be active on any social media platforms apart from pinterest, where she has several pretty mood pinboards

Claudius: He's obviously on Twitter, where he unfortunately regularly gets backlash from a certain anonymous user named 'DefinitelyNotHamlet'

Polonius: ICQ.

Remember that trend? Yeah me neither.

Can't stop thinking about how it's Horatio and not Hamlet who is in both the first and last scene. This is the story of Hamlet, but somehow the play begins and ends with Horatio, because even though it's about Hamlet, it's not actually his story. These are the things Horatio has witnessed - the things we as the audience have witnessed alongside him - and he is going to "speak to the yet unknowing world [h]ow these things came about" (Hamlet, 5.2.364-365). We start with Horatio witnessing the appearance of the ghost and we end with him surrounded by the dead, vowing to tell their stories.

literally i just can’t comprehend any interpretation of hamlet that doesn’t put grief at the center like. hamlet’s father died and he is actively grieving throughout the play that is the driver of all of his behavior. “is hamlet actually crazy or is he putting on a performance” is a boring question to me because grief is a type of insanity. grief makes you feel like you are performing even when you are all alone. it makes you feel like you’re seeing things it makes you feel completely alone it makes you cling to the people around you it makes you push them away it makes you angry and sad and hamlet wants to kill claudius for replacing his father and taking his mother from him as much as he wants to kill him for revenge.

Omg Ophelia you would not believe the day I had.

First horatio was like “methinks I saw him yesternight, the king your father” and I’m all like “the king my father???? But he’s dead; peep the nighted color of my mourning garb.” Then he tells me this wild tale of seeing the ghost of my dad and that I should totally come check it out tonight. So I go and skip my uncle’s rager, but it was cold and Marcellus forgot snacks. BUT THEN OPHELIA—The ghost actually showed up, but it started stalking away. So I’m like “I’m gonna follow it” but Horatio grabs me and goes “nooo doooont! it will make you jump off a cliff or lure you in to madness!” So I pulled a knife on him, because one should always have a knife when communing with spectres loosed from hell, just common sense, and threatened to kill him and Marcellus if they wouldn’t let me go. Can you believe horatios nerve? He invites me ghost hunting and then gets all weird about me hunting ghosts!! Anyway, long story short: ran around the woods in the dead of night and lost my hat, talked to the ghost, pissed myself hence why I’m holding my trousers and—why are you looking at me like my noble mind has been overthrown?

Thinking about how Romeo doesn't know he's in a narrative, and that's what dooms him, whereas Hamlet knows he's in a narrative, and that's what dooms him.

Romeo doesn't check Juilet's body in the crypt because why would he? He has no reason to believe that she isn't actually dead. He never got the message from the friar, and since whatever Juilet took was good enough to convince everyone else, why wouldn't it convince Romeo? And so, he dies.

Hamlet, on the other hand, is so hyper-aware of the circumstances he's in that he stays stuck in his indecisiveness until it's too late.

I wish more comics would delve into Joker's humanity, he's always labelled as psychotic and insane despite the fact that he's such a multifaceted character. He really has the potential to be explored as a human being with complexities rather than an aimless maniac but DC almost always seem to miss the mark (especially in recent years). Ig TKJ went in that direction to an extent, as did White Knight, but overall I just don't think either of them do him any justice.

Basically I'm tired of fanfiction being the only place to find consistently good Joker characterisation.
