5 Times Tim Drake Fell Asleep Unexpectedly

Anonymous said:Tim falling asleep in multiple random places

:D This’ll be fun. I love this kind of thing!

Tim needed to sleep more. And apparently, his body often agreed with him–in spite of his own belief he did not need sleep and could make do on extreme amounts of caffeine.

Some family members had kept track of the places he fell asleep in the beginning–but soon enough, there were too many and it became less of a game.

Top five, however, as recorded by various family members with their phones, were as follows:

1. The first time. Tim had worn himself out his first night out as Robin–the legitimate Robin, not merely wearing the costume.

He was supposed to go home afterwards, so his parents wouldn’t miss him or be upset, a normal enough scheme during his training. Alfred suspected that this had been more emotionally draining than training ever had been, though–the thrill, the euphoria, the adrenaline–and Tim was completely wiped.

He fell asleep in the Batmobile.

Bruce had already left the Batmobile at the time, and Alfred found Tim asleep in his seat, one hand clutching the release for the seatbelt, thumb on the button.

And Alfred had smiled to himself, snapped a picture, and then gently roused Tim. It wasn’t an entirely happy smile–he wasn’t entirely for Tim becoming Robin. But in the year of his training, he’d grown to truly care for Tim.

That picture was still in Alfred’s possession, well-hidden, like the rest of the precious few pictures of the children in costume.

Tim’s almost dopey sleep smile, the way he looked totally at ease, would both haunt and console Alfred in future years.

2. Dick had always taken a more active role with Tim than he ever had with Jason. It was a conscious decision on his part, even if he would not admit it to very many people at all.

And so, he often dropped by unannounced, usually not long after Tim got out of school, to surprise him with either mission work or an outing. Both were equally exciting to Tim, and Dick would quickly figure out, when they went to a hideous wax museum that was just a shade shy of being entertaining kind of horrible, that it wasn’t what they did–it was being with Dick. It was having an older brother.

In any case, he dropped by one day, after school, to pick up Tim for a movie. It was a cheesy superhero flick, the kind that clearly had no clue what it was like to be a superhero–but certainly knew all the standard gags for comedy and the standard tropes for romance within such a movie.

No one answered the door, but he’d just let himself in. “Hey, Tim! We gotta catch SuperAwesome–it actually starts at 5:15 instead of 5:45, and I wanted to grab a bite–you know how Gotham traffic can be…”

No one was responding. Funny, Tim had been excited about going there and making fun of the movie with him. He searched a bit, and still didn’t find Tim.

“Huh. Hey, anybody home?”

He was starting to go into vigilante mode–sharpen his senses, look for clues–and then he spotted a very large container. The exact one used to house Christmas ornaments (a few hundred), all packed in with newspaper and bubble wrap between pieces of cardboard by Alfred.

But all the ornaments were on the tree, and the lid on the container was very ajar…

Dick stepped towards it and nearly choked trying not to laugh.

Among the empty newspaper and bubblewrap, and even the cardboard, Tim was asleep. A haphazard blanket was lying half in and half out on the side away from Dick, and a pillow had completely missed the container. Tim was in PJ’s, and Dick could practically smell the flu on him.

It appeared he’d been dragging himself to the couch, where a cold but formerly hot meal sat, as well as the start menu of some old cartoon movie, and had fallen in–and then just given up and fallen asleep.

Dick took a picture, and gingerly lifted Tim out. The boy was a bit warm, but not alarmingly so, and Dick got him settled on the couch.

That picture still made Dick smile when he looked at it.

3. Jason wasn’t normally one to take pictures, in any case–evidence that could be traced back.

But he’d been tailing Tim for a bit, spying–when the other seemed to disappear. It’d taken several minutes to find him again, the Robin surprisingly elusive for someone wearing such bright colors–and when he did, Jason had to stop in relative shock.

The moron was fucking sleeping in the middle of an alley.

Jason stopped to take stock of the situation, make sure there was no one who had attacked him–but then Tim let out a small, almost adorable snore, and Jason groaned to himself.

He had been moving in a more and more lethargic way, Jason supposed. He was curled on his side, cape pulled over him like a blanket, and damnit, Bruce needed to stop working his kids like they were in a fucking factory in the 19th century. Cause the kind of tired where it won out over fucking survival instinct–that was very bad.

Jason debated what to do about it for a moment–he didn’t want Tim shanked in some alley cause he was asleep. So, after a groan, he took a picture, attached the words, ‘Come get your goddamn kid’ to the message, as well as the coordinates, and sank back to a position where he could watch over Tim, but not be seen.

The message reached who it was supposed to–Batman showed up, scooped up Robin with a sigh after checking to be sure it wasn’t a trap.

Jason never did get the full story on why the hell Tim decided to take a nap in an alley–but he was sort of glad there was photo evidence of it.

4. Steph’s favorite story of Tim falling asleep was not her favorite at the time. They’d been together, dating, and had finally found a break to get together and, ahem, get things on.

Which mostly meant heavy kissing at that point, but still, Steph enjoyed it a lot. It just felt special when it came to Tim, like every little thing mattered more than it had with a lot of previous boyfriends. Sure, sometimes they fought, but she still adored her dork.

And was he ever a dork.

She was kinda leaning over him, him on his back against the sofa arm, and yeah, he’d kinda ended up that way very easily, which Steph had taken as a trust thing, and they were kissing pretty passionately–or, at least, Steph soon realized she was.

Tim’s lips had slowly gotten less and less responsive, and then, nothing–except a small snore.

The exact words that went through Stephanie’s mind at that moment were ‘What the fuck?’

Tim was definitely asleep, head resting against the couch arm and Stephanie’s hand where she’d been holding the back of his head. His whole body was limp, slightly curled in, and exuding that soft sleep heat.

At first, she’d been kind of hurt. She literally had her body against his, she was making out with him (and doing a damn fine job of it, thank you), he should not have been able to fall asleep.

But then she sighed, snapped a picture and sent it to Barbara (’Get a load of this dork–what a romantic evening, right?’) and then instantly regretted it–Tim might not like that. She didn’t want to hurt his feelings.

Not much she could do now, though.

It blew over, Barbara kept it to herself–and Tim got a night’s rest, cuddled under Steph’s aubergine fleece blanket.

5. Damian wanted everyone to understand that he only took a picture so they would believe him. It was not part of their ridiculous game.

Who slept partway in the fridge, after all?

But there he’d been, one hand in the meat and cheese drawer and the rest of him pressed against the cool plastic of the lower drawers. Damian would think, if not the cold, the light would at least keep him awake, but neither seemed to bother him.

Damian watched him a moment. Tim had seemed very on edge lately, he thought. Of course, Damian could not recall a time he himself had relaxed in the way shown on the strange TV shows, but he got the feeling normal, weak people needed to.

And Timothy Drake was definitely weak.

So, Damian took a picture, so no one could accuse him of trying to murder Tim (again), and dragged his stupid, dead-weight body off to bed.

And no, he did not tuck him in, he just dumped his body on the bed. It only happened by coincidence that his head head ended up on the pillow and he was mostly covered by the blanket.

That picture was not one Damian saved, thank you. And he didn’t look at it on occasion when he needed to be reminded of Tim’s humanity or the not so scowling, ‘I hate the demon spawn’ look on his face.

Imagine the batboys switching roles

It starts with Tim and Damian arguing and Tim says something like, “You wouldn’t last a day as Red Robin, demon brat” and of course Damian takes that as a challenge. So, they decide to swap alter egos for a night. Jason thinks it’s stupid, but Dick loves it, so he gets Jason to join with him. When the night comes, they all put on each other’s outfits,(with some size adjustments, of course), Damian as Red Robin, Tim as Robin, Jason as Nightwing, and Dick as Red Hood.

As expected, Tim and Damian hate it. Tim had a different relationship with Bruce as Robin, and hates being treated like Damian.(being treated like a kid) Damian doesn’t understand why Tim works with anyone he works with, Tim’s staff is too long for him, and his notes are so sloppy(from sleep deprivation)he can’t make any sense of them to work on cases. When the night is over, both of them are tired, and somehow hate each other even more. They both expect Dick and Jason to come back the same way.

Dick and Jason, however, loved it.

Dick loves being Red Hood. The armor makes him feel safe, guarded. Even if he gets shot or stabbed, it doesn’t hit him. The helmet is extremely efficient, and he never has to worry about his identity. He feels invincible. He uses the guns, but doesn’t kill anyone. Still, they make his work much easier and efficient. He feels strong, powerful, secure.

Jason loves being Nightwing. The ecrisma sticks that he used to think were dumb, now filled him excitement. Hearing criminals scream as they were electrocuted or the thunk of the stick landing on someone’s skull was as satisfying as shooting a gun. Even though he thinks it’s impractical, he loves the outfit, too. It’s thin, so when he jumps off of skyscrapers he can feel all the wind rushing against his skin. It makes him feel higher than any drug could make him. Now he get Dick’s love for jumping off high buildings. He feels light, strong, free.

Tim and Damian are shocked. They never expected the other two to have such a good time while they suffered. Of course, the peace couldn’t last forever. In the middle of Jason and Dick fangirling over each other, Tim leans over and whispers to Damian, “Told you ya couldn’t handle it”

Tim and Damian don’t hate each other

They misunderstand each other.

I’ve been delving into the comics, searching for the thread that is Tim and Damian’s relationship throughout canon and the overall theme I’ve been seeing is misunderstanding.

The best place to start is the beginning.

Tim came from a neglectful home.  Love and attention was never something just freely given to him.  The happiness he felt post-adoption, living with Bruce, was something he felt he earned, and in a way he had.  After all, Tim was not Bruce’s son when he first wormed his way into the Batman operation.  Bruce had no obligation to love Tim, but Tim proved himself to Bruce time and time again to get to where he was, and did eventually gain Bruce’s love.

The issue where Damian was introduced starts out showing us the state of Tim and Bruce’s relationship at present time.  Bruce is immensely proud of Tim, and says as much.  He claims that Tim knows that, and it’s likely that he does.  Tim seems secure enough in his position in the family.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #655]

Tim is an eager, excited, normal teenage boy. Despite all the loss he’s endured recently, he’s in a good spot.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #655]

And he’s one quite content in his place by Batman’s side.

Enter: Damian Wayne.

Damian, on the other hand, was anything but neglected.  Not in the same sense Tim was, at least.  Canonically, Damian was abused both physically and emotionally.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #665]

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[The Shadow/Batman #3] / [Robin: Son of Batman #2]

I will point out, that #665 happened after Damian met Tim, but I think it still shows what life Damian has come from.  Talia is the one who blew Damian up, after all.  And that smack on the back of the head was nothing compared to the year of blood it preluded, but I digress.

Perhaps it can be claimed that Damian was neglected in the sense that he was never shown the love children need.  He was never nurtured and allowed to thrive as himself.  Instead, he was forced to commit horrible acts, exposed to graphic violence from pretty much birth, and indoctrinated into one of the worst cults in the DC Universe.  (I would claim the worst, but I am, unfortunately, only familiar with the Batman side of the universe)

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman and Robin (2011) #0]

So when Damian is thrust upon his father, he has no idea how to function in ‘the real world.’  He is operating on the rules and values of the League of Assassins. There, if he felt ignored or brushed aside, the way he won attention was by acting out and proving his worth.  Proving his use.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #658]

In fact, he had to continue to prove his worth in order to stay alive in the League.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[The Shadow/Batman #3]

So why would it be different in Gotham?  Damian is about 9, maybe 10.  He is just a child.  How many children that young, that deeply indoctrinated, are going to flawlessly adapt to an entirely new culture and new set of ideals and morals, without being taught them first?  Or even being told it’s different where they now live?

Exactly none.

Bruce, for all his shortcomings as a parent, understands this.  He knows exactly where Damian is coming from, and resolves himself to give Damian what he needs: love and respect.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #657]

Tim, however, does not accept this revelation.  He argues that Damian should earn Bruce’s love and respect like ‘everyone else.’  Read: like he did.  Again, Tim has never once been freely given the love and respect of a parental figure.  Perhaps Jack, in his later years, but it’s difficult to take just a couple good years and ignore the years of prior neglect.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #657]

Tim is operating from a damaged worldview, just as Damian is.  No child should ever have to earn his father’s love, and respect is not something anyone should earn.  It should be freely given, then lost if necessary.  Never the other way around.  And children should always be respected, especially by adults.

Neither Tim nor Damian understand this.

Regardless, Tim is a kind person.  So he tries.  And that’s how we end up with the infamous attempt on Tim’s life.

Tim came home to find a new kid in the cave.  He was a little confused by Damian’s presence, and has a hard time keeping the scorn off his face while Damian throws his fit for them all to see.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #657]

Despite all this, Tim tries.  Again and again.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #657]

Damian, being himself, ignores Tim and fights him at every opportunity.  Even though Tim is highly annoyed with Damian, and seriously defending himself against a violent attack, he still attempts to calm Damian down, saves his life, and tries to talk some sense into him.  Damian, well, pushes Tim off the dinosaur.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other
Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #657]

A lot goes down while Tim is out of commission.  Damian steals Jason’s robin suit and goes out to prove himself to Bruce.  Once Bruce makes sure Tim is okay and being taken care of, he willingly brings Damian with him on a mission.  And this is what ultimately drives another wedge between the boys.

Damian already saw Tim as competition.  Another contender for Bruce’s attention, and by all outward appearances, the current favorite son.  Tim, however, now sees Damian as competition, because Damian just did the unspeakable.  He murdered someone.  In cold blood. He attacked Alfred and he tried to kill Tim.  And yet, Bruce is still showing him ‘love and respect’ in the form of attention.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other
Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other
Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #657, #658]

It’s easy to blame all of Damian’s actions on himself, but in the end, he was just a child.  A naive child, at that.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #658]

But Tim is also just a child.  Likely around 15 or 16, although I’m not sure his age is specifically stated at this time.  I know he tells Jason at least once that he’s 16 quite a while later, but that’s straying off topic.  It’s easy for Tim to blame everything Damian did on Damian himself, because he doesn’t understand Damian or his background.

Bruce does understand, though.  That doesn’t mean he trusts Damian, doesn’t mean he welcomes him warmly in the future, but he understands that Damian’s actions were not his own.  They were the result of abuse and indoctrination.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #658]

Damian, however, does not see that he has been manipulated.  That he’s been horribly mistreated and his actions are wrong.  And it’s this lack of revelation that actually hurts his relationships in the future, but that’s straying again.

Of course, Damian returns to his mother and we don’t see him for a while.  Tim recovers, and eventually calls Damian what he is: his brother.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #676]

Begrudgingly, at least. In a I’m-very-annoyed-why-is-this-happening-to-me sort of way.

But he’s recognizing it, and he’s coming to terms with the reality of the situation.  It causes Tim to become incredibly insecure in his place by Batman’s side, as Bruce’s son, despite Bruce’s reassurances.

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #657]

Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other
Tim And Damian Don’t Hate Each Other

[Batman (1940) #665]

And thus begins the tumultuous relationship that is Tim and Damian.

To be continued….

Hyacinthus By Viria (http://viria.tumblr.com/)

Hyacinthus by Viria (http://viria.tumblr.com/)

I opened my eyes and saw a ghost—his face just as precious to me as Daphne’s. I knew his copper skin, his kind smile, the dark curls of his hair, and those eyes as purple as senatorial robes.

“Hyacinthus,” I sobbed. “I’m so sorry…”

He turned his face toward the sunlight, revealing the ugly dent above his left ear where the discus had struck him. My own wounded face throbbed in sympathy.

“Seek the caverns,” he said. “Near the springs of blue. Oh, Apollo…your sanity will be taken away, but do not…”

His image faded and began to retreat. I rose from my sickbed. I rushed after him and grabbed his shoulders. “Do not what? Please don’t leave me again!”

(…)

I sang of Hyacinthus, the most handsome of men. The West Wind Zephyros had also loved him, but I refused to share even a moment of Hyacinthus’s time. In my jealousy, I threatened Zephyros. I dared him, dared him to interfere.

I sang of the day Hyacinthus and I played discus in the fields, and how the West Wind blew my disc off course—right into the side of Hyacinthus’s head.

To keep Hyacinthus in the sunlight where he belonged, I created hyacinth flowers from his blood. I held Zephyros accountable, but my own petty greed had caused Hyacinthus’s death. I poured out my sorrow. I took all the blame.

That look in Tobey's eyes when he's holding Tom's Peter back from killing Norman. He didn't have to say a single word. They both just knew. That look is haunting me it won't leave my mind.

It was so, so important how they did that moment - how Tobey didn't just snatch the hoverboard out of Tom's hands with a web - but rather he could look him in the eyes, look his younger self in the eyes, and stop him from making the same choice that he did. Not just physically stop him but to make him understand, and let him make the choice to let go himself, instead of making it for him.

I love how they really framed Tobey's as the oldest and the wisest. He's had all this time to look back on that choice he made. All this time to think about the things he would have done differently. All this time thinking if he had just known, wishing he could just go back in time and talk to himself, to stop himself. He never thought that one day he would actually get that chance.

That look. That look that won't leave my mind. That look that said you know you shouldn't do this. You know May wouldn't want you to do this. I know the pain it will cause you. I've felt it. I feel it every day. I don't want you to go through what I did. I don't want you to make the same mistake I did. I don't want you to feel the pain that I do. Please. I love you. Please. It didn't help.

And Tom's Peter listens. He makes the choice Tobey's couldn't. His younger self didn't have him to offer him his strength and compassion and wisdom and perspective. Tobey's Peter can never go back in time and save himself, but at least he could save this version of himself. He can go on living, and the pain will fade more and more every day. Whenever he looks back on his younger self at least he'll know, without a doubt, that in another world, there's a version of him that he was able to help. Who didn't make that choice.

(And then Tom's Peter could then do something else that Tobey's couldn't, that being curing Norman, which he said he's been thinking about for years. Even though he was dead he still wished he could go back and help him, and now he was finally able to give him a second chance.)

(And the fact that Tobey says in the very next scene after May dies that ever since he got here he's been trying to find Peter because he feels he needs his help. I know he probably got there earlier but part of me thinks he got there right after or when May died, and he goes through the portal a few hours later. Yes Peter needed him because of the villains but the real reason he needed him was because of May's death and how he was grieving - and how this universe's Peter was going to make the same decision he did if he didn't find him and help him.)

And Andrew. I saw someone else say that he's still grieving Gwen, which is so true. From his conversation with Tobey it sounds like he really just sunk himself entirely into his work as Spiderman in order to, maybe not so much cope but just keep himself occupied to block out the grief.

He thinks about her every day. Sees her falling. Feels the weight of her in his arms again and again and again.

And when MJ fell, every fiber of his being was screaming not again. Not again. Not again.

In that moment, he just saw Gwen. Like he does every day. Only this time it was all too real.

And this time it was different. MJ's Peter couldn't get to her, just like he couldn't get to Gwen. This time he was here. This time he could do something about it. This time there was someone who could spare Peter the pain he lives with every moment of his life.

Maybe when he caught her, for just a split second, it felt like he caught Gwen. He had relived the most horrible moment of his life again. That moment that lived in his mind, that was always there underneath everything else, burning just a little but without end. Then somehow, this time, it ended differently.

The worst thing that happened to Andrew's Peter was a tragedy, but the worst thing that happened to Tobey's was a choice. They're both things that they can never change, but wish they could. They're both things they were able to spare this young version of themselves from. This boy who's full of so much potential and been through so much already. This boy who needed them. This boy who is them.

Obviously this whole movie was about second chances and compassion. You can always give second chances to people, no matter what they've done. You can always start over with them. Everyone except for yourself. You will always know what you've been through and what you've done. And you can be compassionate with yourself, but you can never truly start over. We can never get second chances in life - we can only have them in the eyes of others.

I wish I could go back in time and be there for my younger self. I wish I could help them and guide them. I wish I could protect them. I wish I could save them. I think about it all the time. I think a lot of us do. But in the real world we can't save our younger selves from pain.

Tobey and Andrew were able to fulfill the impossible dream of giving yourself a second chance. Of saving yourself.

I think what this movie was saying was that, as much as we wish we could, we can't start over. You can't give second chances to yourself so that's why it's all the more important that you give them to others - because if we could give ourselves even one moment of the past that could be changed, we would all do it in a heartbeat.

Anyways saw jason being brought into a titans post recently because it seems fandom has this idea that Dick didn't mourn Jason/didn't care about him/whatever.

So anyways. Let's talk about post-crisis because that's the standard when ppl bring up Robin!Jason.

Fanon myth #1: When Dick mourns Jason, he's grieving someone he didn't know.

Canon: Post-crisis didn't have a ton of time to establish the new version of Jason's character, but they dedicated a whole issue to Dick reacting to Jason being Robin, had Jason show up in The New Titans, and frankly set things up so that their relationship was pretty much unchanged from pre-crisis (which was a good relationship).

The issue I just mentioned has Dick start out as annoyed in the beginning because Bruce didn't tell him there was a new Robin and Jason messed up a case he was stalking out. He's a bit harsh with Jason at first, but it's not meant to be something unforgivably mean - it's understandable. By the end of the issue they've given each other like 3 nicknames a piece (shorty, old-timer, kid, Mr. Nightwing, Mr. Robin, etc) and end by bonding over kicking the crud out of some dudes. It takes Dick all of one day to warm up to Jason lmfao, he's mildly harsh on day 1 and day 2 he gives Jason his old costume and contact information and it ends like this:

A series of three comic book panels. The first has Jason and Dick standing over a pile of guys on the ground. A narration box says "120 seconds later." Dick: "Not bad for a beginner, kid. But you could use some practice on that sidekick." Jason: "Duly noted, old-timer. I'll work on it." The two smile at each other and shake hands, you can see Bruce's outline up above. Narration: "The two of them are flush with the thrill of their well-earned victory. They don't think to look up. So they don't see me." The final panel shows a close up of Bruce's face in the Batman cowl. His face is set in a proud smile. Bruce: "But even if they did, they're too far away to see me smile. Thanks, Dick."

Batman (1940) #416

Now if that's the only issue you read, I too would be a bit skeptical, like "oh he showed up one time, everyone knows he had to at least pretend to try" and if you're reading through a reading list for Robin!Jason and are uninterested in Dick, you'll miss this next thing.

This is Danny Chase, a member of the Titans. He's searching for reserve members of the Titans because he's bored as he got left home alone when the Titans went to space without him.

A series of panels showing. First is Jason Todd's face on a screen with the words "Robin-2" and below that "Status:". In the next panel it shows those words repeated at the top and then Danny's surprised face, his glasses reflecting the screen. Danny: "Huh?" At the bottom of the screen it says "Robin-2" then "Status:" then "Unknown" with each word on a different line. Finally, Danny looks up saying "'Unknown?' I don't get it. I spoke to the Toddster last week? What could have--"

The New Titans #52

Remember that there wasn't a ton of time for them to set up Jason's new characterization, but in universe, he still was Robin for about 3 years. In pre-crisis times, Jason did appear in the New Teen Titans, most notably helping save Dick and Raven from Brother Blood. This is something that is implied to be carried over from pre-crisis into post-crisis continuity, as Danny (who wasn't even on that mission) knows about Jason, has a nickname for Jason, and talked to him the week before he died - ergo the Titans, including Dick stayed in contact with Jason after that mission.

So yes, even in that tiny sliver of time that we got post-crisis Jason, the writers went out of their way to establish Dick and Jason's relationship. They couldn't do it more because it was literally like. A year.

Fanon myth #2: Dick didn't mourn Jason.

Canon: This likely comes from Dick being pretty much okay by the time A Lonely Place of Dying comes around. That's Bruce's arc, but that doesn't mean that Dick didn't have one - he, literally did.

In my expert opinion, he looks pretty upset about Jason dying here... and this is his initial reaction, not retconned or anything - this is a direct response to "A Death in the Family". Basically Danny goes "hey i think Jason died" and it sets off this chain of events

A series of comic book panels. Dick limps away from Kory, one hand reaching back as if pushing her away. His left leg is wrapped in bandages and his costume is torn up, and he's using a crutch. Danny stands behind him with his palms facing up, explaining. Raven is in the doorway saying "You must be mistaken." Kory: "Dick, where are you going?" Dick: "I've got to find out." Danny: "I've tried calling Wayne's place, but nobody ever answers." The next panel has Dick sits at the Titans computer with Danny, Kory, Joey, and Raven looking on. Dick: "I've linked the Titans computer into Bruce's computer in the Batcave. I can access any information that's in there." Danny: "I know. That's how I found out." Dick looks desperately at the screen as Kory looks at him in concern. Kory: "Dick, calm down. There could be a mistake." Dick: "If there is, then I'll take it easy. Oh lord -- Jason!" The next panel has Jason's profile on the screen. Danny: "See -- it says whereabout unknown. No info. That doesn't make any sense." Dick: "Shut up, Danny. I can use Bruce's password to bypass this main screen." The next panel shows the following computer readout: "HT: 5'4, Deceased, of death, of death" with commas representing line breaks. Dick clenches his fists to the sides of his head and tears drip from eyes squeezed shut and he screams "No! No!! Nooooo!!" with the second "No" bolded and the third one written in red bubble letters. The dialogue bubble has jagged edges. The next panel has Joey, Donna, Terry, and Raven all looking upset. Donna: "Jason... dead? My god. How old was he, anyway? How did it happen?" Terry: "I didn't want you to find out this way." Raven: "Richard-- do you need my help?" The next panel has Dick hunched over on the desk with his hands gripping his head. Kory stands over him almost touching his head, and Danny is on the other side. Dick: "No... no! Don't do anything to me, Raven." Danny: "I think it happened a week or two ago. I'm not sure." The next panel shows Danny talking and Kory looking concerned. Danny: "There's been nothing in the papers -- sorta like the secretary disavowing any info and such." Kory: "Danny, maybe this isn't the best time..." The final panel shows Dick crying and gritting his teeth veins popping out of his hand as he holds his head, his eyes are covered in shadows and tears drip off his nose. Danny continues "Hey, we knew the job was dangerous when we took it!"
Dick lunges forward grabbing Danny by the collar of his shirt and smacking him against the computer hard enough to knock off his glasses. Kory stands behind him with her arms up and mouth open in shock. Dick: "You stupid little jerk. God, I can't believe how idiotic you are! I thought it was because you were a kid -- but you're really just plain dumb!" Kory: "Dick--" Danny: "Hey, leggo. Wh-what are you doing?" Kory reaches forward and Donna and Joey rushed forward. Dick stands over Danny, still holding him by his collar. Dick: "No, get back, Kory. I can't keep listening to this moron thinking life's just another statistic. Not when he nearly fell apart when it was his own blood that was spilled." Dick pulls Danny close to his face, scowling at him. Dick: "Listen -- this is real life. Not some Jason Bond spy story where the bad guys get blown away and the good guys always live." Danny: "Lay off, man, before I use my powers." Kory, Donna, and Joey cluster around Dick, who's sweating, still looking down at Danny (off panel). Donna: "Dick... c'mon. Step back."

The New Titans #55

And that's just the initial reaction. Later in the issue, after taking time to think things through, he fires Danny from the team with part of his reasoning being:

"I've been thinking about what happened with Jason and I honestly don't know if we should be taking responsibility for someone as young as you."

From here, chronologically speaking, he visits Jason's grave and expresses guilt over giving Jason his old costume and notes that Bruce didn't even try contacting him about the funeral, which he had missed.

Next we have a not super well known Secret Origins issue where he confronts his feelings about Jason while stuck hallucinating in limbo, and this issue actually acknowledges the incident with Brother Blood and Jason helping out, which confirms it was brought along into the new continuity. Basically these panels sum up the incident.

A series of four panels, the first has Dick waking up. He says "Unngh! Please tell me I'm not still dreaming. Tell me that I'm really here!" The next panel shows his back as he starts to sit up. From left to right Raven, Gar, Joey, Malcom, Karen, Donna, Vic, and Lilith all crowd around his bed. Raven: "We're real, Richard. We're all real. You're home." Kory: "Thank X'Hal." Kory wraps her arms around Dick, standing behind him. Kory: "Oh, Dick... we were all so scared..." Dick: "Kory... man -- it's like seeing you for the first time again. But please -- can someone finally fill me in on what happened?" Raven: "It was the antithesis, Richard. It wanted revenge." Kory and Dick look at Raven. Raven: "Years ago it transformed its servant, Mr. Twister, into the gargoyle to use deceit and psychological assaults against you. He failed. That's when vengeance became an obsession. So they waited-- until your recent emotional turmoil made you vulnerable. The goal was to crush your spirit-- so you wouldn't have the strength to escape. You would beg to remain in limbo. You were already in a drug-induced slumber when we arrived -- and we feared a sudden awakening might prove fatal. There was also Malcom."

Secret Origins Annual (1987) #3

So yeah the "recent emotional turmoil" is Jason dying and Dick's conversation with Bruce (where Bruce blames him for making him need a partner, blames him for Jason's death, punches him in the face while Dick is still injured from the space mission, and kicks him out of the house). And the "drug-induced slumber" is because Dick at some point has started taking sleeping pills, and he feels like shit at the start of the issue and takes one so he can get some rest (which then backfires). Also in this issue, he mentions that he's seeing a therapist (he hallucinates and is like hmm maybe i should call them, before being like, no it's probably fine, I'm just on edge... which rip).

In The New Titans #57, which takes place after this, we see him talking to his therapist, and going to confront Bruce, which now kicks off A Lonely Place of Dying with him in a better place now that he's had some time to talk things out with his therapist and such.

However he still doesn't like bringing up Jason

Tim looks over Dick's shoulder. Tim: "How about Jason Todd?" Dick: "You don't throw softballs, do you?"

Robin (1993) #0

Here they brought him up for exposition, but let's not forget the time Dick beat the Joker to death because he brought up Jason's name. He thought Tim had been killed by the Joker too, but the clown saying Jason's name sends him over the edge.

Dick stands in front of the Joker who is on the ground. Joker: "Aw... Jeez... I hit Jason a lot harder than that." Close up of Joker's beaten and bloody face. Joker: "His name was Jason, right?" Close up of Dick's face as he grimaces and moves in for a punch. The final panel has Dick sitting on the Joker who flails up and arm and a leg as Dick angrily punches him.

Last Laugh #6

After this he's incredibly upset with himself and locks himself in his apartment and when Wally comes to talk to him he finds him looking at a bunch of old photographs, one of which Dick picks up at the end and stares at, which is labelled "Me and Jason". And further on the grieving ends of things, in Nightwing Secret Files #1 the first story features him hallucinating Jason who leads him through his life story (again exposition time lmfao). And in Gotham Knights #26, when Tim brings up Jason in an argument, Dick looks crushed and Tim just apologizes at that point, because he knows he crossed a line. So yeah. Dick grieved Jason.

Fandom myth #3: No one even cared Jason came back and they were incredibly mean and out of line, especially Dick who threw him in Arkham three doors down from the Joker!!!! Jason was pit mad he deserves none of this mistreatment!!!

Canon: Jason came back right before another crisis, the one Dick was supposed to die in, and actually gloated about Dick dying to Bruce's face, while trying to become a drug lord and trying to force Bruce to kill the Joker. Jason then proceeded after the crisis (which had left Dick in a three week coma - he pretty much didn't have the time/opportunity to respond to Jason being alive right away) to dress up as Nightwing and run around New York City killing criminals and through a bizarre series of events, Dick ends up saving him from being eaten by a tentacle monster and then Jason himself becomes a tentacle monster, and Brothers in Blood is an arc that exists...

Dick is conflicted about Jason coming back considering that Jason is you know, going around murdering criminals as Nightwing. He talks to a therapist but when Jason does ask for help, he does decide to go and save him. So he does well... care, it's just complicated because Jason as Red Hood isn't the Jason Dick remembers.

Jason has actually gone to prison twice. The first time Tim in his infinite wisdom decided now, right after Jason tried to start a gang war where his grand plan was "use the kiddie gangs as fodder" and uniting the gangs under the "good cops", would be the perfect time to give him a second chance.

Now the Arkham thing: when Dick became Batman, he decided to renovate Arkham and get ride of all the torture and shit that was going on, because he had spent some time there undercover and was like, getting tortured fucking sucks.

At this point, Jason, with his second chance decides he's going to use it becoming the "Batman Gotham needs" nearly kills Tim (who literally gets away by playing dead using a bullshit technique to slow his heart rate) and shoots Damian in the chest, and also attacks Dick as well (he's not messing around he literally sprays Dick with fear gas in this fight). He then becomes the Red Hood again and kidnaps Dick and Damian in a ploy to unmask them in front of the internet. The police capture Jason, and Dick pulls some strings to get Jason sent to Arkham - he has to pull strings because Jason doesn't actually belong there

Jason speaking up at Batman. Jason: "I have passed all of my physch exams -- multiple times. I'm simply homicidal. Will I kill again? Sure. Am I a bad person? Oh yeah. So keep me locked up. Just not here."

Batman and Robin (2009) #23

And note: the joker just attacked everyone so like he's not in Arkham, he broke out a while ago. And also note: Jason's sane, he's passed all evaluations, he calls himself sane, he is making these decisions not out of pit madness, but because it's what he wants to do. So, why did they pull strings to put him in Arkham? Simple:

"He won't be safe in a conventional prison... there will be a list of enemies a mile long locked up in there with him. Unless he's in twenty-four-hour protective custody, all he'll be doing is fending off attacks."

- Dick Grayson, Batman and Robin (2009) #23

So yeah. He was in Arkham because Dick cared enough not to let him just die. Their relationship isn't by any means good in this period, but Dick very clearly, still cares.

Dick holds out a hand as Nightwing, Jason staring back up at him. Dick: "The fight is over Jason, take my hand. You have no choice!" Jason grins, blood trickling down his face. Jason: "But I do have a choice." Dick: "Don't do it! You can reform! I'll see to that!" Jason: "What's the matter, Dick? Don't want my blood on your hands? Well, it's too late!" Dick reaches out his hand. Dick: "Take it. Now, Jason. Take my hand!" Jason grins darkly at him. Jason: "I'll be seeing you sooner than you think." Jason falls down towards the water as Dick screams "NOOOOOO!" in bubble red letters. Internally he thinks "It didn't have to end this way." Jason then drops all the way into the water.

Batman: Battle for the Cowl #3

I hope that clears things up. @not-your-regular-nerd, tagging you because you recently seemed to have some confusion about how Dick could grieve other people but not Jason. I'd recommend reading some of the comics I mentioned if you don't think Dick cared about Jason. Him caring about Donna dying is not mutually exclusive to caring about Jason dying.
