I Should Be Excited To Read Ward. There’s So Much Potential In A Sequel To Worm. I Care About The Returning

I should be excited to read Ward. There’s so much potential in a sequel to Worm. I care about the returning characters and I really, really, really liked what the epilogue of Worm set up. I’m maybe one of a handful of people that like Teacher (as of his epilogue). I love the idea of a work set in the portal ridden ruins of New York. The tension created by the amnesty and of the Wardens attempting to police this new world. And fundamentally, it’s incredibly interesting to move from a work where the world was slowly ending, to one where the world has ended, but which is no longer on the path to ending.

And yet, I’m aware that this potential is, at least partially, squandered. The evocative picture of New York replaced by the amorphous, placeless City. The problems of resource distribution mentioned and yet never fully integrated into the narrative. The apocalypse cult going through the apocalypse mostly unchanged.

Still I’ll read it. Who knows, maybe I’ll love it

73, Charlotte?

Lets see, 73 is Great King Rat by Queen. Yet another song I got into 'cause of Eidolon.

Hmm. I'll be honest, I haven't though much about Charlotte. She doesn't take up a lot of space in my head, except for thinking about how she went from White Kid with Dreads to known businesswoman and community organizer. I'd like to think that she lost the mayoral election because she still has the dreads.

If I was gonna make a fic about her....hm, we only get a limited sense of how she feels working under Taylor, especially given her past view of her from the bullying campaign. You might be able to write a neat fic that shows her view of Taylor during their schooldays as a pitiful, kind of disgusting figure, and then transfer to her viewpoint during the warlord era where she sees Taylor as powerful and worthy of respect, but still fundamentally disgusting. Something that deals with her feeling under the heel of what she'd otherwise consider vermin. I don't think that's actually how she views Taylor, but it'd be a neat spin on her character.

so like. ward-era parahumans definitely had some kind of khepri-romanticization kink subculture right. like there had to have been a genre of PHO capefic written by capes who were controlled by her and all of them are like "as i felt her control washing over me, i knew i was hers. just meat for her to use." and then they write 700 chapters of vaguely autobiographical vaguely pornographical noncon gold morning fight scenes. that moment when taylor dropped ash beast on scion written with jealousy that taylor chose it to sacrifice to her golden foe and not them.

This Moment In Particular Is Super Special To Me, Out Of All Of Worm. Is The Starkest Window Into Her

This moment in particular is super special to me, out of all of worm. Is the starkest window into her inner world, this is probably the first and only time where she actually expresses out loud to another person the fact that she actually took some pride in being a bad ass supervillain, where she actually gloated about being "bad". She was aware of how deranged she was and she actually liked it a little.

This is a taylor we almost never get to see

Reread 19.y, and noticed something I hadn't caught before:

Text reading: If he’d figured it out, others would too. Or they would soon enough. Her parents – did they know? [The word parents is highlighted] They had to. How could they not? Others. Who else might have paid enough attention to Taylor to guess? The girls who had been bullying her? Maybe, maybe not. Now that he’d thought about it, it was impossible to shake the idea. But the bullies maybe didn’t know the real her, didn’t see the person.

Parents. Plural. He makes such hay over being someone who really knows her like other people don't, but he doesn't know her mom died. That's not an unreasonable or unconscionable thing, you're not rude for not knowing everything about your classmates' circumstances. But also, it was a detail that we see the trio implicitly reference, and that Emma will be explicit about without visible shock from other classmates. People who know about Taylor enough to torment her know about it—but its not something Greg knows. It highlights how he's being kinda ridiculous, thinking he has some special connection to her. Good little detail.

I Think It's Pretty Funny How The Power Fantasy Has A Scene Highlighting How Haven Has Plenty Of Doors

I think it's pretty funny how The Power Fantasy has a scene highlighting how Haven has plenty of doors that close, but then later we see that Heavy's bedroom just has incredibly translucent partial curtains. "We're open about our weird sex stuff. We're secret about our secrets."

oooh have you ever done a post about the ridiculous mandatory twist endings in old sci-fi and horror comics? Like when the guy at the end would be like "I saved the Earth from Martians because I am in fact a Vensuvian who has sworn to protect our sister planet!" with no build up whatsoever.

Oooh Have You Ever Done A Post About The Ridiculous Mandatory Twist Endings In Old Sci-fi And Horror

Yeah, that is a good question - why do some scifi twist endings fail?

As a teenager obsessed with Rod Serling and the Twilight Zone, I bought every single one of Rod Serling’s guides to writing. I wanted to know what he knew.

The reason that Rod Serling’s twist endings work is because they “answer the question” that the story raised in the first place. They are connected to the very clear reason to even tell the story at all. Rod’s story structures were all about starting off with a question, the way he did in his script for Planet of the Apes (yes, Rod Serling wrote the script for Planet of the Apes, which makes sense, since it feels like a Twilight Zone episode): “is mankind inherently violent and self-destructive?” The plot of Planet of the Apes argues the point back and forth, and finally, we get an answer to the question: the Planet of the Apes was earth, after we destroyed ourselves. The reason the ending has “oomph” is because it answers the question that the story asked.

My friend and fellow Rod Serling fan Brian McDonald wrote an article about this where he explains everything beautifully. Check it out. His articles are all worth reading and he’s one of the most intelligent guys I’ve run into if you want to know how to be a better writer.

According to Rod Serling, every story has three parts: proposal, argument, and conclusion. Proposal is where you express the idea the story will go over, like, “are humans violent and self destructive?” Argument is where the characters go back and forth on this, and conclusion is where you answer the question the story raised in a definitive and clear fashion.

The reason that a lot of twist endings like those of M. Night Shyamalan’s and a lot of the 1950s horror comics fail is that they’re just a thing that happens instead of being connected to the theme of the story.

One of the most effective and memorable “final panels” in old scifi comics is EC Comics’ “Judgment Day,” where an astronaut from an enlightened earth visits a backward planet divided between orange and blue robots, where one group has more rights than the other. The point of the story is “is prejudice permanent, and will things ever get better?” And in the final panel, the astronaut from earth takes his helmet off and reveals he is a black man, answering the question the story raised.

Truly the tragedy of Taylor is that she was just, the best at violence and discovered this at a time in her life when she had nothing else. Is it any surprise that she ended up as a creature of nought but violence when people only cared about her in relation to her capacity for violence?

list of times taylor hebert used other peoples powers better than them:

when she told genesis to create a body that looked like crawler with the s9 riding on his back

when she used clockblockers power to bisect echidna. this literally fundamentally changed the way clock used his own power

when she made doormaker open and close portals overlapping each other so that the portals were effectively moving (granted this was only possible with the help of taylors multitasking power)

help me add more things to the list

To a certain degree, I think it must have been even more traumatic for Mars to return to Aleph than it would have been if she had to stay on Bet.

She spent months watching her best friend slowly - and then very rapidly - turning into a horrific monster and suffering the whole time. She survived the horrors of Leviathan and the Slaughterhouse Nine. She had to kill said best friend in the end after she turned into a mountain of mutated, agonized, homicidal flesh. Her power is considered one of the strongest and potentially deadliest on Earth Bet.

And then immediately after incinerating her bestie, who was screaming for her up to the end, and watching bestie's boyfriend get sent to life in interdimensional super prison, she just goes back home where things are... not like that. Aleph is pretty closed off from Scion and all the other cape fuckery. There's capes but they're nothing like her and they sure as hell aren't anything like the ones she fought on Bet. There's no Endbringers on Aleph except for when the Simurgh pops in. Other than the Khepri draft on Gold Morning (which must have been absolutely horrifying for her oh my god), there's probably a good chance that she never has to deal with any cape-related situations again in her life.

She just has to sit there with the power of the literal sun and all the blood on her hands and there's only three people in the entire world who will ever understand what happened to her. How is she supposed to function. What the fuck.

Sometimes I think about for how much Faultline looks down upon Skidmark and the Merchants, for her whole “he has no ideology, he’s just an idiot” line at the S9 moot, Skidmark and the Merchants actually showed up to the Leviathan fight, while Faultline and her people got the hell out of dodge because no one was paying them.

Like, Melanie, you are not significantly less of an opportunist than those guys!  You sided with the villain alliance over the bombslinging terrorist because they outbid the terrorist. Your wholesome fan-favorite found family is composed entirely of people you took in because they were at rock bottom and you could exploit that- you were not Spitfire’s first choice of boss, lady! Your cute surrogate-daughter is someone you broke out an asylum to use as a gun. You only grow principles when it would let you butt heads with Tattletale more effectively, or wring more money out of a deal by positioning yourself opposite Alexandria!

I dunno, I find this internal moral jockeying between the villains to be super entertaining because of how clearly it highlights how many people in the wormverse are angling for any means by which they situation they’ve arrived at in life is the morally and practically correct one.
