warning: depictions of racism, insecurities

a/n: Last night, as of writing this, an anon decided to submit a photo of me calling me the n-word. This is one of many attempts of hate on my blog and several other blogs, simply for the fact we cater to black audiences or advocate for diversity on this sight. Last night was horrible, and mind-numbing to me. Sadly it wasn’t the first or last time I will be call that word. It was thanks to my followers and friends that I got out of that funk. I needed to write this story since certain anons have gone blog to blog saying Todoroki wouldn’t like black people. Placing racist views onto characters because you “think they wouldn’t like black people” expresses your hatred, not the characters. I love you all, and black lives still matter.
Your eyes looked back at your reflects, dull and unsatiated. Your dark skin gleamed in the yellow-tinted lights from the bathroom, hands gently grazing and probing places on your skin. You bit your plump lips, a sigh escaping them in the process. The smell of coconut diffused in the air coming from your hair products.
You typically weren’t insecure. You were proud of your heritage and skin color, wearing it as a gratifying badge, yet. Your hands immediately went to your face, looking down at the porcelain skin in front of you. It didn’t help when you god poisonous stares, glaring at you. It didn’t help that people would talk about your features behind their backs.
It didn’t help you could hear under their breaths the words that have haunted your race for years.
You took your hands away, turning the skin facet—cold water immediately shooting from the spout. Cupping your hands together and leaning down. You splashed the cool water onto your face. Droplets of water remained, slowly dripping down your chin. You adjusted your boyfriend’s blue hoodie, the smell of him wafting from it.
The sound of gentle knocking surprised you. Did Todoroki have to use the restroom. You quickly went to the door, cracking it open. As you thought, Todoroki stood there—cyan and stormy grey eyes slightly squinted with worry. His pale hand ruffled his long red and white hair, a behavior he often did when he was struggling with what to say.
“Are you alright? You seemed distant since when we went out earlier…” Todoroki trailed off. This all happened after you had decided to go to Shibuyu together. Hand-in-Hand, smiling at each other, you couldn’t shake off those rude stares and careless whispering bystanders were giving you.
“The beautiful Japanese man with a black person? Times have changed for the worst…”
You could feel your eyes watering, remember the exact words you hear—eyes remaining on Todoroki. Your lips formed into a smile, countering the negative emotions you were feeling inside. Sensing your discomfort, Todoroki took a step forward—your bodies were almost touching with one another.
“(Y/n)…” he whispered, placing a hand on your plush cheek. It felt so warm, so gentle—the way he learned to expressed his affections to you always had a way to make you melt. You placed one of your own hands on top of his, fingers loosely dangling with his.
“…Shouto, do you think I’m beautiful?” you whispered out, feeling detached. Todoroki narrowed his eyes, confused on why you would ask that in the first place. The moment his eyes fell on you, he was captivated. The way your skin glowed in the sunlight, how your smile would light up a room—he was a moth to the flame, and you were his flame.
“Are you kidding me,’ he muttered out. The feeling to curl into a ball intensified briefly before Todoroki leaned in closer. His fingers gently caressed the skin on your cheek, moving your hand in the process. Your noses were almost touching with one another, mouths slightly distanced from the other.
“You are the most beautiful person I have laid my eyes upon. It is as if there is a deity trapped in a human’s body. How your lovely curls reach the sky, how kissable your lips are… Darling, where is this coming from,” Todoroki mumbled. Your eyes shot away from his briefly. You knew Todoroki loved and cared about you, but your heart remained heavy.
“Wouldn’t you prefer someone else? I’m not exactly beautiful in the eyes of many. I think you would—
“You’re beautiful to my eyes, who cares about the rest?” he interrupted. Your eyes widened, sparkling at his confession—lips parted and trembling. He managed to struck a cord in you, an insecurity you had, had since the beginning of your relationship. With the snap of his fingers, all those fears felt your body. You could feel your shoulders relaxing, tears streaming from your eyes. You couldn’t even respond, opting to lean into his chest.
You felt his arms wrap around your frame, gentle placing pecks on your cheeks and forehead. He hated the way people managed to poison your thoughts of him. He hated the way you saw yourself as lowly due to your race.
He wished you could see him through his heterochromatic eyes.
You felt yourself being pulled away from his chest, body twisting towards the mirror—his hands rested on your hips. You could see your bloodshot eyes, looking back at you. Todoroki’s lips were right by your ear, shivering from the puffs of hot air he was giving you.
“In front of me, I see someone who is strong…but I also see someone who’s insecure. No matter what anyone says, they aren’t going to dissuade me from seeing you in any different light. You’re mine as I am yours, my love,” he whispered your ear feeling his arms wrap further against your hips.
“I love you, Shouto…” you whispered. Todoroki kissed away a lone tear that managed to escape, the salty liquid on his tongue. His lips began to trail against your neck as if he was trying to slowly ease your thoughts through his actions.
“I love you too, my love,” he murmured back against your skin. Todoroki would refuse to let you think of anything but extraordinary, even if he had to break those thoughts word by word, sentence by sentence. His goal would be to fill your head with joy than sorrow.
Being black is hard, especially in an interracial relationship, yet somehow, someway, Todoroki hold on you made all those whispering and stares dissipate from your mind. It was as if you and him were the only ones in the world this time, and you wouldn’t complain. The two of you loved each other—race and color made no difference.
