This feels like a crazy long shot, but do I know anyone who plays Pokemon Go in the Uxie region?
*dances around* Not only did I get to meet Brandon Sanderson and have him sign my books, I ALSO got to meet Ben McSweeney (see previous post)!
While hanging out in the bookstore waiting for the signing to start, I met a couple of other fans. One of them had gotten there early enough to get one of the special "get a seat at the front of the Q+A" wristbands but didn't have a question. I got him to ask what Horneater stew would be like on earth. It is apparently based on a spicy Korean seafood soup that traditionally is made by just throwing anything acquired from the sea (shrimp, clams, mussels, etc) into the pot whole, shells and all. He gave the name of the soup. It's Korean. I would probably butcher the spelling completely, so I'm not going to try.
When I got through the line, I asked if he could draw the Blad defense in The Rithmatist. His response was a look that very clearly said "You expect me to remember which one that is by name?" I clarified and he just kind of laughed and drew me one of the 4 point circles and suggested that maybe I could get one of the more complex ones from Ben.
I asked for something about Kaladin when he was signing WoR. Before I tell you what he wrote, I should mention that he was halfway through writing it when I opened my rithimatics notebook and kind of distracted him. "Kaladin has known multiple lightweilders."
So. Rithmatics. I pretty much just started flipping through my notebook asking questions about each page. Most of the questions got a simple affirmative. For the other things, I'm paraphrasing:
Yes, 5 and 8 point defenses could exist. They haven't really been explored in world though.
You can always bind more than one thing to a bind point, but binding multiple things weakens the point. It is a much better idea to add a small circle that gets 3 additional bind points. It doesn't change anything if the point comes from multiple points in the 9-point construction.
When I showed him the 9-point ellipses constructed from different triangle centers he stared at them for a moment before answering. He hesitantly said that, yes, those constructions should be valid in theory, but that they shouldn't be used in practice. The sides of ellipses are weak enough that if you expect to need to defend your sides you really should be using a circle.
At this point he started to say that we shouldn't hold up the line too long as I flipped to a page titled Lines of Vigor. I was going to let it go, but he glanced at the page and told me to go ahead and ask :D
Yes, Lines of Vigor behave like light waves. (I'm so glad I was right on this)
To clarify I double checked that this means that higher frequency waves are better for doing damage, lower frequency waves are better for transferring energy (and thus moving things)
Yes, Lines of Vigor follow the rule that the angle of incidence =angle of reflection.
GUYS. LINES OF VIGOR ALSO REFRACT. I asked it in terms of whether they slightly change speed and direction when they move between materials like, say, concrete and asphalt. He said yes and that you also get the wavelength adjusting. Ben then commented that he hadn't known that. *flails*
I got "Oh, wow"'s from both of them while I was flipping through the notebook :-). At that point, Brandon passed me off to Ben and we chatted about inconsequential things while he took one of my spare sheets of paper from my notebook and drew me a picture *flails more*
I'm still on such a high guys, it's crazy. *dances around*
(very minor edit to fix a typo that was bugging me)
Hello and welcome to Cooking with Kaly. I decided I wanted to make chouta. It was an adventure.
We know that the meatballs are made by mixing flangria with ground lavis, forming it into balls, battering it and frying it. To create these meatballs we therefore need something to represent flangria, something to represent lavis, and a way to put it together without egg (since eggs are unlikely to be used in cheap street food on Roshar.)
I happened to have ground turkey in the freezer that I had gotten on sale at some point. It seemed like a reasonable stand in for flangria. Given the range of ways lavis is used, I feel like corn is a reasonable earth analogue, so ground lavis gets to be corn meal. I mixed the 1.5 lbs of meat with 1/4 cup of cornmeal, 1 Tbsp chili powder, 2 tsp cumin, and 2 tsp oregano, formed it into small balls (maybe a heaping Tbsp of meat per ball? I didn’t measure), then covered them and put them in the fridge for a while to let the flavors meld.
Before cooking them, I rolled them in cornmeal, dipped them in water (some but not all of the cornmeal will fall off), then rolled them in the cornmeal again. I fried them in a thin layer of canola oil in a cast iron skillet until they were golden brown. The cornmeal gets all crispy and the flavors are great. I’m a big fan of these meatballs. (note:the plate in this picture is small, the meatballs are not giant. There are also a lot more meatballs not shown)
For the flatbread, I mixed 1 cup mashed potatoes (since tubers seem to be common on Roshar) with 1/4 cup cornmeal, a heaping 1/4 cup flour and 1 tsp baking soda. I kneaded the mixture until I had a dough that I could press out into a decent sized flatbread. This made enough for 2. Transfer the pressed out flat bread *carefully* to the frying pan and make sure you don’t try to flip it too soon or it will tear and be a mess. This made a decent flatbread. I think the recipe needs work though.
I used the pan drippings from frying the meatballs to make the gravy, but I didn’t have any good broth to use so it came out a little bland. I think drippings gravy is the right idea here, I just didn’t do it well.
Overall verdict: This definitely feels like street food. It was tasty and has the potential to be amazing once I get the flatbread and gravy right. Nomnomnom. It’s not going to win any awards for being good for you, but that’s not what this is about.
We've talked about 9-point circles. Here is a further exploration of 9-point conics in case you are curious:
brightlord-kholin replied to your post: Hello and welcome to Cooking with Kaly...
I’ve gotta find a way to substitute the meat with a vegetarian fake meat thing because this looks delicious and I need to try it.
Hmmm... I would probably start by playing with a falafel recipe, but I could also see tempeh working well. Fake meat is also a decent interpretation of “soulcast meat,” so you can even claim you are sticking to canon :D. If you decide to try it, I would love to hear how it goes!
and I really, really want to introduce Vin, as we meet her right at the beginning of the story, to Lift. They wouldn't trust each other at all at first and for quite a while, but they would cautiously work together because it is better than the alternatives. It's possible they would see each other as rivals, but I want Vin to eventually take Lift under her wing like a little sister and they can be awesome magic scrawny teenage girl street thieves together. They could get up to so many ridiculous shenanigans and steal *everyone's* dinner...
My thought process on reading this:
Yeeesssss sibling interatctions!
Mmm, if Lift were Kaladin's little sis, she would be the little sis of all of Bridge 4. Since Rock is in charge of food, he would be her favorite big bro (or maybe uncle?...hmmm...either way works) and she would hang out around him and try to snitch food constantly. Rock can see Wyndle and they conspire to try to keep her somewhat in line, but Rock is also never actually mad about her eating. Sigzil takes it on himself to be her tutor and both starts teaching her to read glyphs and helping her understand her awesomeness by experimenting with it. Lift isn't thrilled with his tutoring and sneaks off whenever she can. She learns much more about her awesomeness from the games she gets into with Lopen. She catches Lopen glowing sometime and insists (with much stomping and pouting that isn't actually necessary because Lopen doesn't really need convincing) that he teacher her how to glow because that is so awesome! At some point he sticks her to the wall and starts to laugh at her but then she becomes awesome and slides down the wall and past him making the bottoms of his shoes awesome as she goes past so that when he tries to turn around he slips and falls. Lopen is briefly stunned and then bursts out laughing and congratulates her and from then on they are constantly trying to use their powers to get one over on each other.

does anyone else really want to see the dynamic between kaladin and lift
because I’ve been thinking about it all day and I feel like since most of the radiants so far are pretty tall and lift is. not. she’d want to see what all the tall people were doing so since kaladin’s the tallest she’d end...
Hey guys. Iredomi posts their cosmere fanstuff over on sebrukiscrossbow and this includes a collection of lovely cosmere inspired poetry. This is me reading one of their poems. You can find the text of the poem in their original post here.
In the chasms in Way of Kings, Dunny creates an insult poem by making the rhythm fit the song Mari’s Two Lovers. Rock then goads Dunny into singing it before joining in. Ashiok and I have been working on lyrics for the song. This is what we have so far, but this is a Rosharan drinking song and we are pretty sure it has many, many more verses, so we are releasing it into the wilds of the cosmere fandom to see if anyone else happens to have any verses to add. Current lyrics under the cut.
Dunny’s poem:
Hey you big buffoon,
you smell like a wet hog,
so go out by the moon,
And jump yourself in the bog.
Mari’s Two Lover’s (lyrics by Kalyna and Ashiok)
Gather round and hear
this tale I have to tell
of our young Mari dear
and the men she loved so well
Mari was a lass
Though Not the brightest sphere
She often cut her class
to a wander far and near
There she met a lad
who took her out for wine
But she arrived with Khad
and left with his brother Stine
Khad and Stein were twins
who looked so much the same
it was beyond her ken
that the two had different names
The twins had a tell:
two eyes of different hues
they were distinguished well
cause their eyes were switched, it’s true
Their town had a dance
And Mari begged to go
While there she whirled and pranced
Always watching for her beau
As she spun around
She fell/came into Khad’s arms
She was extremely proud
Khad had fallen for her charms
Then she came to Stine
And danced with him a turn
She stared into his eyes
Oh but still she didn’t learn
Khad had brown and blue
While Stine had blue and brown
But our dear Mari knew
Her beau was the best in town
Over in a lait
An axehound pup bit Stein
To keep up the charade
Stein cut khad with some fork tines
Now this song must end
I sadly have to go
But Mari and her men
Oh their tale goes on you know
Because I saw the first panel of today's Gunnerkrigg Court update and my reaction was "Dude! When did Paz become a Windrunner?" I don't think Paz is actually a windrunner though. She would hang out with Shallan and they would go meet all of the creatures. Paz would absolutely be up for tracking down a chasmfiend for a chat. (Oh man, Shallan in Gillitie Wood. She would be so excited.)
More below the cut, but it kinda got long.
Eglamore, on the other hand, would totally be a Windrunner. Parley might be as well, but she also might be a Willshaper. I'm not sure.
Kat would hang out with Navani and they would be awesome engineers turning magic things into technology together.
Annie is half Horneater and inherited the ability to see and interact with all of the spren. She discovers she is a Lightweaver (I guess, unless she finds a way to get transportation and illumination, but that doesn't appear to be a thing) and quickly learns to navigate Shadesmar. (Blinker stones are totally infused spheres).
Zimmy is a Lightweaver who didn't have a mentor to teach her to navigate Shadesmar and sometimes she gets sucked in unintentionally and sometimes she accidentally pulls other people in with her and sometimes she managages to only get partway pulled in and accidentally projects an image of Shadesmar into the physical realm. The whole situation is a mess. She finds it relaxing to stand out in the riddens after each highstorm. It helps to ground her.
Ysegrin would be one of the Parshendi leaders.
Coyote is Wit. Or...no... maybe Jones is Wit and Coyote is the Stormfather. Yes, I think that works better.
I can't decide where Reynard would fit in and it's bugging me.
EDIT: I figured Reynard out. He is totally a Kandra.
So. I found my way to tumblr when I first discovered Brandon Sanderson's books. As a result, this, my main, was all Sanderson all the time. Tumblr won't let us change which blog is the main blog and my brain won't let me make this blog more general, so you'll find my general tumbling (currently including a great deal of Imperial Radch and Murderbot) on my "side blog" RithmatistKalyna.tumblr.com .
