Reblogging because this is really good advice!
Hi Jenny, I was curious and looking for advice. I graduated from LCAD just last year, but I'm still having a lot of trouble achieving a more natural look to my digital art and linework. (I took Vargo's digital painting class, but my linework usually looks like stairsteps instead of smooth). Your work is always very lovely, smooth, and natural looking, is it okay if I ask what you do to achieve it? Or what program/tablet do you prefer to use?
Hi there, thanks for the kind words! First off I want to make a disclaimer for everyone here at the top: these are my own thoughts and opinions based on how I personally work & perceive my work. This advice is not for everyone, if it’s not for you that’s totally cool, everyone has their own path!As for your question this is a really difficult one to answer. There is no program or brush that helps with what you are trying to achieve. All the drawings I do are done in photoshop on a Wacom Cintiq (sometimes an iPad) and each drawing uses a variety of the Kyle brushes. I understand the frustration of not being taught how to clean digital line work or even to be able to sketch digitally but the best way to think of it is if you are inking on paper and to treat it the same way- difference is there is the safety net of the Cntrl Z hah. I also was never taught how to sketch or draw in any program so I was self taught, even through college. I had to just practice constantly until I was able to achieve the line quality that I was after.
Here are some great tips I have gotten over the years:
-The line is the essence of what you are drawing, it’s more than just the contour of the form or an identifiable path; it is the flow and movement in which the drawing is given life
-Try not to make mindless lines, every line should have it’s purpose so do it thoughtfully. This means being thoughtful of your silhouettes, straight against curves, so on & so forth.
-Try not to lift your pencil off of the paper so much, if you want to avoid the “hairy line”
-Be aware if you are using your shoulder/ elbow movement to draw or if you are tensing up & only using your wrist. This breaks fluidity in your body thus also breaking the fluidity of the drawing.
-Be confident in your lines- it shows!
-Less is more
I’m sorry there isn’t a definitive answer for this question but I hope these tips help. In the end it really just took me a lot of practice, self study & self discipline. Don’t give up & just keep practicing! <3

Pressure is reaching a boiling point as Internet users continue sounding the alarm ahead of the deadline for members of Congress to show they support real net neutrality protections by signing on to the discharge petition for the CRA resolution to reverse the FCC’s repeal.
Representative Brenda Jones, who won a special election to succeed John Conyers in Michigan, just became the latest House rep to sign on. Her name appears next to Rep Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), who has now officially signed on to the discharge petition after facing a flurry of angry phone calls and messages from constituents when she put out a video last week saying she wouldn’t sign.
Internet activist group Fight for the Future has been using the page DemsAgainstThe.Net to highlight the handful of remaining Democrats who are the only members of their party who have not signed on to the CRA. And online actions surrounding the open letter at DeadlineForNetNeutrality.com have been amplified by celebrities like Tom Morello, Evangeline Lilly, and Bassnectar, along with companies like Tumblr, Etsy, Postmates, and Reddit. The group also deployed a mobile billboard in Washington, DC that cycled through the faces of every member of Congress who has not signed the CRA.
“The fight for net neutrality is far from over, but time is running out for members of Congress to make decision: do they want to go down in history as the corrupt politicians who rubber stamped the repeal of net neutrality? Or will they sign on to the CRA discharge petition and show that they’re willing to put their constituents’ basic rights ahead of their corporate donors,” said Evan Greer, Deputy Director of Fight for the Future (pronouns: she/her).
Last week, on the one year anniversary of the FCC repeal, the group issued a blog post explaining the path ahead for net neutrality beyond the CRA resolution. Fight for the Future will continue to push in Congress, in the states, and in the courts, until net neutrality is restored.

Here's a WIP of what I've been working on this past week for my Illustration class. 🔷 This assignment is another collage, using very detailed life drawings from a specific book. I've taken images that I liked, collaged them together, photocopied them, then used a special marker to transfer the images on to Bristol paper. (Looks like magic, no? 😆) 🔷 I haven't drawn anything yet, but I plan to later. I haven't been feeling that great, so I think I'll go get some more rest. Hope you enjoy!
Feel like I should do this for my characters at some point.
Is there a character you want to know a little more about? Well step right up and drop their name in my box–and I’ll tell you more about them. (Reblog to have folks do this for you) You’ll get to learn:

I took a photo of my art and played around with its colors on my phone. I thought it'd be cool to share. 😁 I'm still finishing up coloring the original, so stay tuned.
I finished up painting my birdhouse yesterday for the upcoming BirdUP! Art Show this Saturday. I had been working on it for a while now... I wasn’t sure what I was going for, but I stopped when I thought it was enough. I guess that’s how abstract work goes? Either way, I hope you enjoy. 😊 Be sure to come on out and see our work! The art show is the 12th from 4pm to 9pm at the C.A.C.t.T.U.S. art gallery in Downtown Long Beach. Feel free to message me if you need help finding its location.
I painted this pot today. I was trying to create a green gradient on it at first, but I kinda messed it up so I gave it a solid green coat instead. I’m hoping to finish touch ups and plant some Burro’s Tail in it soon, hopefully next weekend. 😊 I hope you enjoy~
I haven’t drawn anything in forever. (4 months 😬) I’ve been really busy but it felt nice to draw for myself again. 😌 Inspired by some artists InkTober prompts. I hope to ink this soon.
We're a quarter of the way into the Fall semester and October is just around the corner! 😱 I've been busy, working on a few art projects, but I got in some quick sketches here and there. Hope you enjoy! More artwork to come soon. 😊🍁⠀
