I love joining a fandom and immediately making my fav character agere
Like ik this mf is EXHAUSTED let me just
hello!!!!! youāve mentioned previously that you have some opinions on bakugo mitsuki as a mother, and im super curious about them šļøšļø
Hihi!!! Basically, Iām one of those people that really dislikes Mitsuki. Ultimately , my opinion is that the fandom can be really weird in their mindset about her because she is a toxic/bad mother, and I think thatās true regardless of how much someone might like her.
(This is really long because I yap about a couple different things, sorry!)
Mitsuki falls victim to an issue that I have with Horikoshi as an author; he has a really bad problem with tone and trying to merge his comedic aspects with his more serious ones. The best example I have is Hagakure, a character that solely exists because he thought it was funny to have a female character with the āneeds to be naked to be invisibleā tropeā something that destroyed her ability to be an ACTUAL character and caused her to be so overlooked that she accidentally makes more sense as the traitor than Aoyama, the one that was known to be traitor since day one.
Itās absolutely fine to have darker themes in a silly show, have a kidsā show become darker, or have two juxtaposing tones to highlight how serious things are getting. Spy x family is a show that does this incredibly well, imo, even with some of the pacing issues I have with it. With mha, however, Horikoshi will just randomly add things and commit to them just because heās thinks itās a funny bit and it ultimately ruins a lot of things about his work.
Bakugou Katsuki is one of them. As much as I love him, his character is fundamentally flawed because his authorās intentions with him and what the audience would interpret from him are so vastly different. The reason for this is because there are two major aspects of his character that are big deals but Horikoshi refuses to actually handle it as if it is because, to him, theyāre jokes or something thatās not meant to be taken too seriously (based on the way he addresses them). The Sports Festival ending was absolutely horrifying if you think about it for more than two secondsā there is absolutely no way it is ever NOT abusive to muzzle and chain up a fifteen year old boy on NATIONAL television (possibly international because Aizawa says this festival replaces the Olympics). This is especially true when that same student had previously been attacked by a villain that GAGGED and RESTRAINED him (the sludge villain at the beginning of the show).
This is something that would traumatize him. I donāt care if he ādeserved itā (he didnāt), this was humiliating and abusive and if UA wasnāt a sociopolitical superpower alongside the hero commission, the repercussions of this wouldāve been devastating. But itās never addressed because Horikoshi did it as a joke. This moment is meant to be funny and youāre supposed to laugh at how out of control Bakugou is. Despite the fact that this display is what leads the MAIN ANTAGONISTS to feel sorry for him and offer him a place with them because they believe heās being abused by hero society. And I could hear the argument that this was all intentional and the league kidnapping him was meant to show how bad the end of the festival was, but Iād argue that nothing ever happens to cement that idea (in the anime, at least! I know that lots of stuff gets cut from the manga so it might not be wholly Horikoshiās fault if there is manga or side content that goes against any of this). No one ever apologizes to Bakugou for it. Bakugou never talks to a friend about how these events were connected. Itās never addressed and, with how the villains and hero society are consistently treated throughout the series, I find it hard to believe that this was the actual intention here.
All this to say that his relationship with his mother is the exact same.
Mitsuki treats him the way she does because Horikoshi thinks itās funny. Sheās meant to be a parody of the strict/harsh mother that a lot of Asian households haveā but the problem with this is that a lot of Asian mothers are abusive. In fact, the āharshā way a lot of parents are across different cultures is all abusive, but itās often justified with āwell, thatās just how parents are hereā but I donāt think thatās a good excuse.
Itās important to note that her being abusive makes her a bad mother, but I donāt think she doesnāt love her son or that sheās inherently a bad person. People often jump to this defense when you say sheās abusive, which is part of the strange mindset I spoke of earlier. Itās really dangerous, imo, to imply that an abusive person canāt love their victim and I donāt like that perspective, even with domestic abuse. These things have nuance and itās not an all or nothing thing like people online like to pretend it is. Treating someone badly doesnāt automatically mean thereās no way you could ever love them or care for them, it just means that you treated them badly. Their love doesnāt justify their abuse, nor does it make it any less bad or traumatizing and saying that itās okay because Mitsuki loves him has that implication.
In the same way I can say that someone is saying/doing something homophobic and not mean that they are a homophobe that hates gay people and wants to take our rights away, Mitsuki is abusive, but I donāt mean sheās a ruthless child abuser that feels no love or remorse. Iāll say that again: when I say sheās abusive, I donāt mean sheās incapable of love, but her loving her son does not change the fact that she treats him poorly and that she, and any mother sheās meant to parody, are bad mothers because this isnāt a healthy way to raise a child.
And I say that as someone who has a mother like her! Mitsuki as a fandom topic is really triggering for me and I tend to avoid positive posts about her because so many people like to justify her behavior, which in turn feels like theyāre justifying my motherās behavior. To add context as well, Iām white but my motherās side of the family is all Japanese, with my great-grandmother being the one to immigrate to America. I donāt say this to compare my experiences with people who are actually Asian or Asian-American with mothers like Mitsuki (because Iām like 1/8th Japanese at this point so Iām in no way apart of this group šš), but a lot of these behaviors are caused by generational trauma and I know my mother acted the way she did because of her mother, and because of her mother, and so on. Basically, this topic is kind of personal to me, even if Iām not in the exact position to be able to speak on it from a cultural standpoint.
To circle back, though, I donāt believe itās accurate to say my mother doesnāt love me, even though she was abusive to me. I donāt think itās accurate to say my grandmother didnāt love my mother, even though she was abusive towards her. Parents are far more complicated than that and it feels really gross to justify objectively bad actions by saying āwell, she canāt be abusive because she means well and loves her son!ā
Arguably, Endeavor loves his kids, as shown in his atonement arc (though, I donāt love how that one is written either)ā that doesnāt make things any better, though, does it?
Mitsuki hits Katsuki. That is an objective fact because I have the scene pulled up right now and Iām watching it happen. Another objective fact is that itās never okay to hit your kids. Itās not okay to spank them. Itās not okay to whoop them. Psychologically, this does more damage than good and Katsuki is actually such a good representation as to why. When you hit a kid for being bad or too much, they learn that when someone is ābadā then they deserve to be hurt, which leads them down two roadsā either THEY become physical against other people when other people do something wrong (like the way Katsuki uses his quirk against Izukuā because, yes, Katsuki was abusive towards Izuku too. That doesnāt mean heās a bad person now. He was a child and this was a learned behavior from his mother/his environment but that doesnāt suddenly justify it or make it better), or it means that they continue to allow other people, such as romantic partners, to hurt them as they get older because they feel like thatās the acceptable punishment.
I donāt care that heās a teenager. I donāt care that she does it to reel him in. If itās not okay to smack another adult because of their attitude problems, itās not okay to do it to a child.
And the way she speaks to him is incredibly damaging. I donāt have access to the manga panels rn so this is based on the anime (dub with the translated subtitles) so maybe the manga handles it slightly betterā but when Aizawa goes to ask for permission to let Katsuki stay at the dorms, Mitsuki smacks him COMPLETELY UNPROVOKED and when he snaps back at her with aggression telling her not to hit him, she responds with ANOTHER smack and says, āOh, shut up! Itās your fault to begin with for being so weak. You got caught, and now youāre causing everyone trouble!ā (subs)/āOh hush! If you hadnāt been so damn weak, you never wouldāve gotten caught and caused all that trouble!ā (dub line)
Her son was just kidnapped.
Kidnapped by people that, at this point, have cemented themselves as incredibly dangerous individuals. The nomus are publicly known and publicly associated with the league because of the attack in Hosu City. He was kidnapped by people so dangerous that ALL MIGHT had to retire after he fought themā on NATIONAL TELEVISION. Katsuki could have died. Katsuki was traumatized. And this is how she treats him in front of PRO HEROES.
Following this, she hits him AGAIN and goes on about how Katsuki is good at everything because of his quirk, but that he was always being praised for shallow stuff and she says that itās likely why he ended up like this. For starters, this obviously upsets him a bit. Humbling him isnāt a bad thing, but thereās a time and place for it and itās very obvious that this line of thinking is how we end up with him having his fight against Izuku. Heās incredibly insecure despite his pride and if everyone was praising him for shallow stuff, what was she doing? How was she handling it other than hitting him and telling him that heās weak? Do you really expect me to believe that the ONLY reason Katsuki acts the way he does is because his peers and teachers said that he was the best, and it has nothing to do with his mother who is aggressive even when he doesnāt do anything and describes him as āgood at pretty much everything he does because of his blessed quirkā? His mother who responds to his kidnapping with āwell, you got caught because you were weak and it caused so much troubleā?
Children are a product of their environment and thereās nothing anyone can do to convince me that Katsuki is the only child in the world whose biggest influence wasnāt his parents.
āHeās a hot tempered brat and we know heās a painā (dub)/āheās a hopeless guyā (sub). If she talks like this to his teachers, to Pro Heroes, how does she talk to him when theyāre alone? How did she respond when he was attacked by the slime villain? When he was chained up and muzzled on live television? You simply canāt convince me that she wouldāve reacted any better.
I donāt care that she liked what Aizawa said at the press conference. I donāt care that she means well. I donāt care that she loves him. I donāt care that she clearly cares for him at the end of the manga when heās in the hospital. No amount of manga panels showing her smiling when sheās near him or holding him as a baby will change the fact that she is a major part of why Katsuki is the way he is. Again, she can love him and be trying her absolute best and still be abusive or a bad mother, regardless of what Horikoshi was intending. I will never argue that she hates her son or that she does this maliciouslyā but based on her behavior, sheās incredibly damaging to be around.
When did she start hitting him? Was it when he was younger and getting too prideful for his own good? Did it start because he was annoying? Or because he had an attitude problem that she didnāt have the patience to solve without needless violence? Did she try anything other than hitting him or was he just getting on her nerves so thatās what she resorted to first? There are times where kids are truly uncontrollable and there really is nothing you can do to stop them from acting out. There are so many parents right now dealing with kids that refuse to listen and are engaging in really bad behaviorsā again, I have personal experience with this.
But something tells me that Katsuki isnāt and never was meant to be one of those kids. Something tells me (and that something is his characterization and how he thrives under Aizawa who actually respects him and how heās disciplined and grows without parental intervention and how heās a hero) that Katsuki was not so uncontrollable and dangerous that it warranted any of this. Heās a fifteen year old boy going through some of the worst things people in this universe can imagine and sheās treating him like a burden. Itās actually devastating when you think about it.
My mother did the best she possibly could with the resources she had and I have no doubt that she loves me. But love should never feel like that, and while I respect anyone who wants to like Mitsuki or play with the Bakugou family dynamics, I donāt like her and I donāt like his family and I donāt like the amount of people in the mha fandom that consistently try to justify her behavior by saying itās just a joke or just a product of the culture.
TLDR: I really dislike Mitsuki and how sheās handled in both the show and fandom. I 100% think that Katsuki is a victimā of his parents, of UA and hero society, and of the villains that target himā and itās such a critical part of his character to me, a part that often goes overlooked because it genuinely doesnāt seem like most of it was intentional so a lot of people ignore it or just miss it entirely.

Katsuki headcanon that he Fries His Hand on the pan to check the temp while frying something.
Well, not literally. Firstly, I imagine that he has a heightened heat tolerance to handle his explosions. Secondly, nitroglycerin ignites at around 200 degrees celsius (400F), which happens to be around medium heat on the average stove. So whenever Katsuki needs to fry something he just places his hand on the pan to feel the temperature. If itās hot enough, thereāll be little crackles of his quirk going off from his hand. So when he cooked in the dorms and someone other than izuku saw him do it for the first time, they totally freaked out because it looked and sounded like Katsuki was literally frying his hand.

š¤ - an absolute babie! neito regresses but he doesnāt actually have a definitive age range. itās hard for him to really pinpoint an age, so he doesnāt bother. he just knows that he likes what he likes, regardless of what number he could arbitrarily choose. this usually means that, even when heās feeling older, heāll still use his younger regression gear. he makes a point of joking about it, acting as if itās just a bit he does to be funny. truthfully, heās very insecure about using his gear around other people but he accidentally regresses quite often and gets really upset when he doesnāt have his gear so he just pushes through and pretends like it doesnāt bother him (even if he isnāt accidentally regressed and heās just around a caregiver, he still feels weird about it and, if the caregiver is someone heās super close with, neito is prone to subtly asking, in the least subtle way possible, if itās okay). no one actually cares as much as he does, but heās too stubborn to realize that so he ends up stewing in his shame a lot with a pacifier in his mouth (it is, admittedly, very cute to see him pouting about it).
š¤ - he doesnāt love bold colors in his stuff. heās a bit of a minimalist, preferring stylish chic clothing and toys. he gets made fun of a lot for being a boring beige baby (which he disagrees with! he doesnāt like beige, he likes simple blacks, greys, and whites with an accent of color to keep things looking aesthetically pleasing). he just finds the more colorful baby items to be extremely tacky and an eyesore. heās a toddler, not blind. his stuff can still look nice even if heās a little younger when he uses it. in that sense, I think heās the antithesis of aoyama, who likes brightly colored everything, while still being just as wildly dramatic about it. he likes stickers quite a bit, but he likes putting them in sticker books instead of on his furniture or walls. that said, shinsouās computer is covered in stickers because neito likes decorating his things. shinsou doesnāt care that much, but he does find it amusing that neito will cover other peopleās things in stickers and drawings but refuse to do it in his own dorm with his own stuff.
š¤ - neito is also a pet regressor but he finds this one to be far more embarrassing (and like with his age range, he canāt actually figure out which animal he likes) so he almost never engages with it. he really likes the idea of being a kemonomimi (someone who dresses with animal-like accessories), but it really isnāt his style and he finds going outside of his comfort zone to be unnerving. he already has to adopt so many other peopleās quirks and mannerisms to use said quirks with copycat, so he hates when his identity isnāt locked down in a neat box. the only time heās ever willingly engaged with it was when shinsou dressed in this really cute punk cat outfit with ears and a tail, which let neito dress as a dog and make passing comments to people about how theyāre matching. he does really enjoy being called animalistic pet names of any varietyā and he specifically likes bunny and ducky quite a bit (calling him ducky/duckling is the easiest way to make him small and he has a lot of duck themed things).
š¤ - he is very attention driven and very jealous when heās in headspace. he really struggles with sharing anything, but especially a caregiverās attention. heāll go out of his way to compete with everyone on anything if it means getting praise and affection. one time, aizawa was babysitting him with eri and he genuinely got so worked up over coloring a better picture for him, despite the fact that aizawa isnāt even his teacher and eri is a literal child. somehow, both class a & b heard about it and teased him for trying to win against a six year oldā which, in his defense, he was probably around that age too. the only real exception to this jealousy is shinsouā who he thinks is too cool to compete with. he basically already believes that shinsou is better than him and has completely accepted that. itās not the most healthy outlook on his friend, but it is a positive that heās willing to co-exist and share with someone else.
š¤ - heās extremely picky about what he does in headspace and he gets bored really easily. he likes watching cartoons in french, despite only knowing the bare basics of the language, and heās absolutely obsessed with movies like lupin the thirdā anything with that phantom thief trope that heās based his hero persona on. he really likes spy shows too and enjoys anything with some good action and mystery to it. his favorite book series is sherlock holmes and I refuse to take criticism on that. if he werenāt from like fifty years in the future or whatever, I think heād really like bbc sherlock and that makes me giggle. I honestly think he likes british tv in general too. idk what it is about him but that seems right.
š¤ - neito is a very āgo with the flowā kind of person when it comes to other people. despite what everyone may think, he really isnāt the type to judge anyone for anything. heās very similar to shinsou in the sense that he doesnāt really care, he just says anything to get you riled up. that means that when he first learned about age regression from a classmate/peer (probably shinsou), he didnāt actually care that much. when he learned that a different peer regressed (bakugou), he did go out of his way to make snarky comments about it. at the time, he didnāt know that heād start regressing so he was all high and mighty about it and, when he inevitably got a babie brain, he really got humbled.
(cw: talks about discipline)
š¤ - I donāt normally headcanon regressors with rules and punishments because I donāt tend to like them and I donāt feel like many characters I cover would either, but I actually think neito would like the structure and his brazen attitude in headspace is very similar to when heās older and attention seeking. itās nothing too extremeā usually just corner time to cool off and think about how mean heās beingā but it is a very common occurrence. heās very sensitive towards being perceived as ābadā because of a lifetime of people disliking his quirk and generally just having behavioral issues (kids who act out rarely enjoy being labeled as bad; theyāre just reacting to a lack of something and neito is no different), so discipline with him is walking a fine line and involves a lot of trying to teach him that there are better ways of getting attention and of expressing his insecurities or lifting up his friends.
(cw: accidents & pull ups)
š¤ - I also feel very strongly about neito having issues with bladder control. he scares easy because of his sensitivities in headspace and heās easily distracted which makes him prone to ignoring his needs. heās usually pretty good at catching it when heās not in his fuzzy/unclear version of babyspace, but he struggles a lot at night with wetting the bed (which gets worse with nightmares after the war). he does actually really like wearing pull ups/being padded and will usually wear them when heās feeling small even if he doesnāt need to. they just help keep him under <3
