When Kyana Was Sitting Up On That Spire, And Davian Flew By In His Hummingbird, And They Had A Little

When Kyana was sitting up on that spire, and Davian flew by in his Hummingbird, and they had a little conversation, I really enjoyed the moment the two characters had. It was one of the most interesting and satisfying one-on-ones in the first campaign.

I like to think that at some point after the Beastlands, Davian visited the Grand Arena, and ended up facing Kyana. Kyana didn't quite roflstomp him -- Davian drew a little blood, from the one hit he got in, and Kyana had it treated nonmagically, so she could bear the scar as a memento.

What if real life is the Eldritch Apocalypse, and we have all but forgotten earlier times, before The Planets Aligned, before we discovered Things Humanity Should Not Know, Dug Too Deep, and ruined our world by making it... this?

What if the true Eldritch Horror is... normativity? Conformity? Regimentation? Dullness of mind and experience?

What if we could remember what "whelming" felt like, or when cars still needed to be quarzyk-tested? What if squirrels reminded us of those times, because even though they used to also come in some of the colors that are now missing, they're pretty much the same, otherwise?

I still have a hard time internalizing that "Well, if there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from" is an authentic quote from ANH.

Not telling your kid they have a learning disability, chronic illness, mental illness etc. so they can “feel normal” actually does the opposite. They will not feel normal if they do not have the context to understand that their normal will be different from that of their peers.

It's easy to be "original" when there are no rules, no exceptions. But, under those circumstances, it's difficult to be interesting.

Spotted Towhees (Pipilo maculatus) look like someone took an American Robin (Turdus migratorius) and tried to make it "edgy."

A Spotted Towhee, seen from the left and slightly behind, looking back at the camera with one bright red eye. The bird's head and back are black instead of an American Robin's grayish brown, and speckled with white, as if it's wearing a black leather "battle jacket" covered with metal studs.

Its beak is heavier, and a broad white streak runs across the middle of its rufous breast and belly. Its posture seems vaguely furtive.

And they really are edgy little fuckers, too. They'll pull up every single shoot that pokes its head above ground in your garden, and are very clever at getting through barriers. They do not fear humans, not further than you could lightly toss one.

If you find a roadkill or mysteriously-dead towhee in Spring, it's worth its weight in gold, because they are deterred by a corpse of their own species. The next problem is putting it somewhere these ground-feeding birds will notice it, without making it a free snack for the first scavenger that comes along.

Other similar things people say are:

"Oh, I was just curious."

"I was just asking a question!"

"Apparently you can't take criticism."

"If you can't take a little criticism, you shouldn't blah blah..."

"I'm just sayin'!"

"You need to touch grass."

"You take everything too seriously."

It's all the same redirection trick.

Complicating matters is the fact that not everyone who redirects this way is consciously aware of what they're doing and may not even have genuine malicious intent. People don't want to admit to any bad qualities... some people redirect like this so they don't have to admit to themselves that they were thoughtless or malicious.

That doesn't justify their behavior, however. It just makes it harder to correct.

A three panel comic of a person bullying Honeydew. The comic is titled "Backhanded Joke" and is made by Theresa Scovil. Panel 1: A person smugly talks to Honeydew. No dialogue is shown. Honeydew looks shocked. An arrow points to the smug person that's labeled as "Obviously bullying." Panel 2: Honeydew angrily yells back. No dialogue is shown. The person looks shocked. An arrow points to Honeydew labeled "Obviously upset." Panel 3: The person looks away and smugly responds "Pfft. I see you can't take a joke." Honeydew is angry.

You're not "too sensitive" for getting upset when someone purposely upsets you. It's not "just a joke". They know what they're doing. They're just hiding their bullying behind the label of joking so they can play innocent.

Smugfolk: (getting off the ferry) "How are you, this morning?"

Ferry terminal agent: "Cold. Wet."

Smugfolk: (who has already stopped listening) "What?"
