One of my favorite things about Somewhere Beyond the Sea was how was Sal has grown and become more comfortable since the beginning of the first book. I mean, this kid who rarely spoke up about anything, and NEVER around Linus, is now the one the kids almost always trust to speak up for them.
And more importantly, he calls out the adults for dumb things they're saying or doing SEVERAL times throughout this book. It says so much about Arthur, Linus, and Zoe and the way they raise these kids that he's comfortable doing that. It makes my heart so happy to see him have a place where he's that comfortable in his own skin, and I love the adults in his life for giving him enough respect and room to flourish for that to happen. It shows in all of the kids, but I think Sal especially.
Oh, and that adds up with him knowing ancient Greek in the show. Like, he knows he's half Greek and his mom teaches him so that they can all speak together. Also, maybe he's heard of Thalia, like his dad talking about how she was a hero but saying that she died in an explosion or shooting or something, so when Annabeth talks about her being a tree, he's like 'my cousin died, she's not a tree'. Adding to the disbelief he feels. Oh, and when he meets Medusa has a whole other meaning, like he is talking about what he did to her and him saying that his dad had changed but not justifying his dad's actions, saying that he is not his father. Or when Hermes talks about wanting to be a better father for Luke, Percy would be like: I didn't even know that Peter was my father and he still supported me and my mother, so don't give me that bull-. Also, Gabe wouldn't be in the picture, as Percy would be protected enough, as no monster would ever mess with Peter. I have so many ideas.
Percy Jackson AU where instead of Poseidon being absent in Percy’s life, he helps raise him. But Percy doesn’t know his dad is Poseidon. He thinks Peter Johnson is a marine biologist and a fisherman who is frequently on long business trips for his job. Maybe Sally and Poseidon are divorced, and she marries Smelly Gabe or maybe they’re still together, who knows.
Just, instead of Percy being in anger at the gods for neglecting their children he’s in disbelief that his very normal father is Poseidon. They go on fishing trips together all the time and he dresses like a tacky Hawaiian tourist. Not a god. He refuses to believe this despite Grover being a satyr, and Mr. Brunner being a centaur.
I’m not sure if Percy should know all of the gods or not. Maybe he knows Mr. D already as Cousin Dexter. Cousin Dexter has shown up a couple of times in his life. He’s a devil for the drink and a known alcoholic, so why is he at this weird camp playing cards with Grover and Mr. Brunner? And they start talking about the gods and demigods again. And Mr. D calls him ‘mortal.’ And Percy’s like yeah, no Cousin Dexter has had a bit too much to drink despite the fact that he can’t smell any alcohol on him, and he’s only been drinking Diet Coke. Percy switches subjects as to why Mr. D isn’t drinking any alcohol. Apparently, his father won’t let him drink alcohol anymore and is forcing him to work at this summer camp. Percy is happy to hear this because at least someone isn’t having Cousin Dexter’s shit anymore.
Then they switch gears back into the conversion about gods existing and he’s sure Grover, or Mr. Brunner, or Mr. D will say sike, but none of them do. They all seriously believe in the gods. Well Percy is stubborn and won’t be convinced this easily.
And then he finds out that Hades stole the master bolt and has his mother, and he’s like uncle Hector? Uncle Hector is a god of the underworld? And he has my mother and stole Zeus’s lightning bolt? No way. Uncle Hector lives in LA and works at a music producing studio. He is not the god of the underworld. He is not Hades, this is insane and Percy does not appreciate being punked. He’ll admit some supernatural stuff is real because a minatur killed his mom, but being a demigod no way.
And they keep telling Percy about the family drama and he’s still in disbelief. All he knows about uncle Zane is that his father is not on good terms with him. There’s no way uncle Zane who his father HATES, who works in the Empire State Building is Zeus. There’s just no way.
And then he finds out about the Big Three and forbidden children thing. And he goes ‘That can’t be true uncle Hector has two kids: cousin Bianca and cousin Nico.’ And he just accidentally spoils to everyone that Hades has not kept his end of the pact about fathering more mortal children.
And then they’re on the road going through quests fighting against Alecto again, Echidna, and Medusa and Percy still can’t believe the gods are real.
It isn’t until he gets to the underworld that he starts believing. There seated on a dark throne surrounded by skeletons is Uncle Hector? Uncle Hector is actually Hades? He’s freaking out he’s never seen his uncle this way before. He’s terrifying and keeps demanding this Helm of Darkness thing in exchange for his mother. Where’s Nico he wants to hang out with his cousin?
And maybe Percy sasses him because what the heck uncle Hector sending furies after your nephew and holding your sister-in-law hostage and accusing your nephew of theft is not cool. And things for the most part will proceed like they do in the book for the most part. I could see Hades when he’s pretending to be a human behaving similarly to Jay Duplass’s portrayal of him in the TV show. Just a comical uncle who is most certainly not lord of the underworld.
(I’ve only seen the TV and I’ve almost finished the first book so far, but I do know Hades has two kids named Bianca and Nico)
I love this so much, it warms my heart like nothing else 🥺 I would like to add that this makes her fake dying 1000x worse because he lost yet another protector and basically his best friend/sister figure in one awful twist of fate. Imagine how much harder it would have been for him to still feel comfortable with wearing more feminine clothes and just going out to have fun would have been. Oh, and when he says to JJ 'what if I had relapsed?' oh, that would have been more heartbreaking because Emily one would have been the people who helped him the most through that! Whenever he had the urge after he started getting sober, he would go to her house and just sit there, she didn't need him to talk, he just had to be there and she would just be there. Ok, I'm done.
We all remember what Emily was like when she first joined right? I imagine that she'd want to get the know the team more and when you have a young genius as a coworker, wouldn't you want to hang out with them to?
And Spencer's face when she asks him to hang out. He rarely gets asked that when he does get asked by someone on the team most of the time it involves drinks.
But you see, Emily is a really bad influence. The more he hangs out with her, the bitchyer he becomes. They'll go get coffee together on their day off and they'll just people watch. "Did you see the shoes they were wearing" "hideous. Blush is so not her color."
Hanging out with Emily is going to her house randomly because he feels alone and no matter what time he comes over she's always available. It's takeout and a sleepover. Falling asleep braiding her hair and she's sitting on the floor petting Sergio. It's playing video games and watching chick flicks not because he likes chick flicks, not because he's good at video games, but because it doesn't matter what they're doing together he knows it's going to be fun either way.
I think she gave him the shades that he has. "Now Morgan isn't the only one with badass shades ;)" they give each other small gifts randomly it's like "i don't wear jewelry." "You don't have to wear it-" "no I'm gonna wear it are you kidding me? Shut up."
Spencer finds her apartment so comforting it's a home away from home. He likes the carpet and the view and how it's not modern. The colors are warm. They hit the town and go to the gay bars. They find it hilarious when they walk around DC people think they're a couple. "Oh my god she really thought you were my husband" "i know right?!" "I can't. she thought i liked dick"
She's so blunt and inappropriate. They're the epitome of "so i was sitting there, barbeque sauce on my titties, and-". She's so happy that he's this totally different person while he's not at work. They go shopping together and she pushes for him to be more bold, to go out his comfort zone. She really helps him with his feminity. Something he's always struggled with from his dad telling him to be more normal and being bullied as a kid. She'll do some makeup on him "c'mon Reid. If you don't try it, how will you know you don't like it?" While she blasts rock songs and they dance around and trash the place.
For everyone else on the team, it took them awhile to get invited to Reid's. Emily however? She is invited so quickly. She thinks his place is weird but she's not surprised. They complain about their crushes together.
They almost always smiling at each other in a way that makes it seem like no one else is in the room! How can people think that they do not love each other and would have run off together to live in a farm? Opening a small book shop, having kids, and Neil doing acting on the weekends? Getting through reconnecting with their parents together as they strive to give their kids a better support system than they had? How?
the way these two constantly had to touch/be in proximity to one another is pretty homo if you ask me
PREACH!!!!! The same one that may elect a president that was found guilty 34 times and will give him immunity if he wins.
Love it!
I made a silly little riordanverse pride parade!!
Percy’s “crashing a car after annabeth smiles at him” to “blowing up a volcano after annabeth kisses him” pipeline is going to hit hard
They break our hearts every 5 minutes! If not with them breaking up, it's someone dying (or pretending to die)!!! 😭😭😭
