Language Practice for Upper-Intermediate and Advanced Learners

One of the most abso-fucking-lutely frustrating and terrible useful and effective methods of studying I’ve found is to practice simultaneous interpretation. What’s awesome is you can do this anytime your target OR native language is being spoken, as interpretation works both ways.

For instance, when watching the news at night, if I’m not multitasking in some other way, I’ll just start doing my best (no matter how terrible it sounds/how much I don’t know) to interpret it out loud into Russian (or sometimes Spanish or French). You can also do this in your head if there are other people in your house – that’s what I normally do.

Because you’re not interpreting for anyone, it doesn’t matter how badly you do. What’s important is simply practicing the rapid recall of words as they appear at native speed.

Interpreting into your target language is obviously much harder than interpreting from it, so for upper-intermediate learners it can be extremely helpful to find a news source in your target language. For instance, in Spanish and Russian I am advanced enough to try interpreting into it (again, albeit with MANY mistakes – but I’m not doing it for anyone but myself so it doesn’t matter). However, my French sucks. It used to be okay, and it is getting better, but I would not (and have never) called myself “advanced” at it [hopefully within a couple years]. Thus, it is easier to interpret French into English.

There were all found via google and the same can easily be done for any language. Streema is a great resource for any country – for instance Streema Spain and Streema Mexico and Streema Russia – definitely an amazing resource that probably deserves its own post.

From Beginner to Intermediate: an intense plan for advancing in language

Introduction

I've studied Spanish at school for 3 years and now I'm at a low B1 level. I can actually understand pretty well while listening or reading but I can't communicate fluently.

This plan will include vocabulary build up, some grammar revision, a lot of listening, reading and writing. And could be used for the most languages, not only Spanish.

Plan

Every day:

Conjugate one verb in present, past and future tenses

Make a list about 10 - 30 words long

Create flashcards with them and start learning them (I use Quizlet for flashcards)

Revise yesterday's set of flashcards

2-3 times a week:

Read an article or a few pages from a book

Write a few sentences about anything in your target language

Listen to one episode of podcast (at least one)

Once a week or every two weeks:

Watch a movie in your target language, preferably animated movie as the language used there is easier. You can watch with subtitles

Grammar exercises

Translate some short text

Once a month:

Write something longer, like an essay or report, on chosen topic

Additionally:

Talk to yourself, to your friends, to your pets

Text with someone

Look at the transcription while listening to the podcast for second time

Repeat what you hear (in podcast or movie)

Check words you don't know from the listening and reading

Read out loud

Listen to music in your target language - you can even learn the text and sing along

Watch YouTube in your target language

Change your phone language to the one you're learning

Think in you target language!!!

***This is very intense plan for self-learners, you don't have to do all of these things in the given time. Adjust it to your own pace. I'll try to stick to this, if I have enough time.***

You had been playing Monopoly for two hours with Dick now, and needless to say things were getting slightly boring. 

Dick smirks as you throw the dices and fall on the ‘Go to Jail’ square.”Oh too bad babe, seems like you’re going straight to jail…” He says mockingly and an idea pops into your mind as you scoot closer to Dick, since you two were sitting on the floor with the board game on top of the coffee table. 

You smile innocently and he narrows his eyes at you.  “I’m sorry officer, isn’t there anything I can do to get you to change your mind? I’m sure there’s a few things.” You say teasingly and you see Dick gulp down as his cheeks turn slightly red.

“I’m-I’m sorry but the justice system doesn’t work that way.” He stammers and your hand rests on his thigh.

“And you happen to know a lot about the justice system, don’t you Officer Grayson?.” You mumble slowly as you bite your bottom lip, locking eyes with Dick. You lean into his ear. “Fine, but you can pay me a conjugal visit.” You whisper before nibbling on his earlobe, your hear a throaty groan come out of him.

“I guess i have to.” He says in a deep, low voice, before turning to face you and smashing his lips agaisnt yours forcefully. You groan in satisfaction before he bites your bottom lip and tugs slightly before departing. “Were you that worried i was going to win that you had to throw me off of my game?.” He mumbles, still inches apart from your face as his hand goes to your sides, you smile.

“No, you suck at this game - It just got boring.” You shrug and he chuckles.

“Should i be worried that whenever something gets boring you like to seduce men?.” He asks teasingly and you roll your eyes before kissing his jaw and them moving to peck his lips. 

“You’re the only man i like to seduce, Officer Grayson.” You whisper and he throws his head back, groaning.

“Ugh - I have never been so turned on than when you call me Officer Grayson.” He says and you bite your bottom lip. 

“Do you rather hearing me scream it?.” You mumble and smirk and his eyes go wide for a second before a smirk takes over his lips.

He captures your lips once again as your hands grip tight on his black raven hair. 

“I’ll get my uniform.” He mumbles eagerly against your lips before running to your shared bedroom.

"You don't kiss and tell,"you said in a low voice, glaring at him as best as you could from where you stood at over a foot shorter than him. Apparently it didn't work. It only served to amuse him further, and he leaned against the doorframe, radiating chaotic delight.
