“They can be dangerous,” said Jane calmly. “But they are not very big.” She lifted her hand again and sent them away even farther, chittering shrieks fading as they scampered into the woods.

There were so many words trying to spill out of Lucas’s mouth but all he could manage was “holy shit, holy shit, holy shit” over and over like some kind of mantra as Max faintly mumbled “Not very big?”, so it ended up being Dustin who managed to say what they were all thinking.

“Max was right! You do have superpowers!”

“That’s not what I said,” said Max, but Jane was already glancing between them hesitantly. Okay, Dustin might have yelled it. “But like, you do, don’t you?”

“Did you not see the way she moved them with her mind?”
