Do You Ever Notice How It’s Only Ever “mental Health Awareness” Until Said Mental Health Starts

Do you ever notice how it’s only ever “mental health awareness” until said mental health starts making other people uncomfortable? People preach about suicide awareness until they have to actually face what would make somebody want to kill themselves.

Society has this thing where it’ll go on and on “reaching out” or for example “talking to a school counsellor” but the only image people have in their heads is some teenager from a troubled home, divorced parents probably, suffering from some mild depression, a bit of anxiety, and then they’ll comfort them and oh won’t they be the absolute hero, being such a good support to a poor suffering soul.

And of course, that hypothetical scenario I just gave is perfectly serious in its own right – of course no matter the severity of the mental health condition, no matter what the individual has gone through, of course they’re still deserving of help and comfort and love, and of course “mild depression and a bit of anxiety/divorced parents” is absurdly shitty to have to deal with and nobody should have to go through that alone, and yes, of course they should be comforted (although wholly without the aforementioned saviour complex.)

But society preaches about supporting those pushed outside the norm by their psychological health, but even then it fully has its own idea of what is inside the norm of outside the norm. Anything that falls outside that is pushed away and not spoken about, or, frankly, even viewed as depraved in some form or another. The moment somebody’s psychological condition starts to make people uncomfortable, all their self-righteous rhetoric about supporting those who need support flies outside the window, and society starts to panic. ‘“It’s ok not to be ok”, unless you start to make me feel uncomfortable.”

For example, yes, support the mentally ill until the mentally ill start to have intrusive or violent impulsive thoughts. Support the mentally ill until they find it difficult to communicate and function in society. Support the mentally ill until they can’t take care of themselves, don’t clean themselves. Support the mentally ill until they’re paranoid, until their thoughts aren’t based in logic. Support the mentally ill until they start to have hallucinations. Support the mentally ill until their psychological trauma disturbs you.

Support the mentally ill until they make you uncomfortable. If people start to be tormented by their own thoughts and the “vents” you expected of simply the four words, “I think I’m depressed” start turning into ranting that disturbs you, then they’re “weird” and that person is ostracised and left to rot in those thoughts. If someone self-harms, then they’re immediately labelled as “emo” or “doing it for the trend”, which is completely disgusting, but also interesting that most of the time this happens because society can’t comprehend the idea of wanting to harm yourself. Society can’t comprehend mental illness generally, so it’s shunned or seen as pathetic or laziness.

Of course, not everyone is equipped to deal with mental illness, and that’s perfectly fine. Some people may genuinely feel out of their depth and unable to help, and that’s ok. However it’s that ostracization, that dismissal out of discomfort or fear towards people that makes it all the worse and makes the people who preach about mental health awareness hypocrites.

It’s ok not to be ok until you fall outside the norm. Then you’re no longer human. You’re a disease.

Society can’t handle what it doesn’t fully comprehend, and instead fears it. It’s the same way with queer folk/specific different cultures, depending on your own/anything that society doesn’t understand, it fears. And the same is the way with mental illness. And when society fears something, it either becomes unspeakable, or it’s mocked.

- ADHS ANTIFA - ABGELENKT UND TROTZDEM ANWESEND I love you so much

- alle boppen ihre Schilder zum Rhythmus vom Lied

- die Omas gegen Rechts lieben wir ja eh

I love and hate civil war both with a passion.

I mean it's so important to stony within the MCU, without it we'd never have the 'here is my heart' metaphor, when Tony gives it to Steve, we'd never have longing gazes in Endgame, the pain between them, overshadowed by the yearning that you can just feel, the 'you trust me? I do', so I love it, I do. I love the divorce for them, somehow it makes sense that those two would break apart, because that's just who they are. They love each other, but the world comes first, and they love each other but it's complicated, and in the end they will love each other.

I still hate Civil War, too though, because it is also so important to their core relationship. And it broke my heart. I feel like, while in this timeline it wasn't, it could have been prevented.

But it doesn't matter, because they love each other anyway, in whatever way all their shared, complicated history allows them to. As much as they allow each other to, respectively.

Just Civil War.

My favourite Divorce Movie of all time.

Barbie made me cry, Part idk what

So, there are so many reasons why I cried during the Barbie movie, but the one scene that really made me tear up was the scene where Barbie meets the old woman at the bus stop (?) and tells her that she’s beautiful and she just answers with “I know it.” To me, this scene made me cry, because there are so many women in my life that I look up to and regard as INCREDIBLY beautiful, but by the societies norms, they aren’t beautiful at all. Because they are “too old” or “not slim enough” or don’t have a face that would be titled “pretty” or “beautiful” and some of the women that I’m talking about in this post even think of themselves like that. So every time I hear them say such things about themselves and every time I hear some stupid person on the internet talking about how some celebrity isn’t slim enough or young enough anymore, I just want to tell all the women in the world just how beautiful they are. How inspiring they are to me, how I love their grey or white hair, their wrinkles and their larger bodies, how I love their unique faces and their beautiful smiles and how I would like to punch everyone who ever told them that they aren’t beautiful or pretty or any of that.

That’s why his scene made me so emotional. Because Barbie told that beautiful old woman, exactly what I want to tell so many women in my life and because that old woman KNEW that she’s beautiful and that she doesn’t need to be young or thin to be just that.

Yeah, I know this post is long and not a lot of people are going to read all of it, but if you did read it, please just tell the women around you just how beautiful and important they are, because our society just loves to diminish anything that isn’t traditionally beautiful and that is simply a crime.

How do you fall back in love with life?

clean your room.  clean space, uncluttered space, space that doesn’t have miasma clinging to it can work wonders.  clean the dishes.  sweep.  take out the trash.  peel the clothes off the floor and wash them, and then actually fold/hang them.  take a long shower.  scrub behind your knees.  brush your teeth.  (this can be utterly exhausting, but try to get it done in a day, if you can.  the end result is worth it.)

pull out your notebook.  it doesn’t need to be a new notebook, but preferably one that you don’t usually write in, or that you haven’t touched in a while.  fuck moleskins.  the yellow legal pad will work fine.  sit in your room, or in the park, or in the library, and write a list.  count clouds.  describe all the colors that you see, and note patterns that arise.  sketch the cracks in the walls.  note the shape light makes when it enters a space.  talk about what the air tastes like, smells like.  what sounds are there?  even the white nose, break that down: air planes, fans, cicadas, anything.  remind yourself that you are sitting in the middle of a space brimming with detail.  remind yourself that you are not in nothingness and emptiness.  your world is fathomless.  it has potential.

drink cold water and try to eat something that isn’t processed.  it does not need to be fancy.  buy yourself an apple with the change between your couch cushions.  eat it outside.  if you’re someone who walks, walk somewhere afterwards, just to stretch your legs.  take your fucking meds.  remember that its a good thing that you are inside your body.  your body is a fantastic and endlessly intricate machine, and even though society has smacked a bunch of poisonous ideas on it, that doesn’t change its inherent worth and splendor.  take care of it.

read a novel.  underline your favorite lines, and write phrases that twist your heart inside your chest on the back of your hand with an ink pen.  read a novel like it’s poetry.  read poetry, something decadent but unpretentious.  watch a movie you haven’t seen before.  if there are free art galleries near you, walk through one.  take your time.  let yourself bask.  if there are patterns in what makes your soul ache, write those patterns down – marbles arches or soot crumbling bricks or dandelions or descriptions of dresses or whatever it is, write them down.

your chosen family is important.  remember, they picked you as much as you picked them.  the love has no obligation.  it is given freely and it is given from a place of compassion.  you are not a burden.  if you need to breathe, take a minute by yourself and just exist, but remember to go back to your people.  when they need you, listen and be gracious.  always be gracious.  the universe sometimes remembers things like that.

listen to new music.  link jump on youtube or related artist jump on spotify or ask the chap beside you in the cafe what their favorite band is, and listen to that.  listen to something that you don’t usually listen to.  we tend to tie up a lot of memory with music.  we are falling in love again.  the soundtrack needs to be specific to that.

allow yourself to indulge in romantics.  press flowers in old books.  play movies with subtitles and mouth the words.  dance in your room.  wear something that makes you feel good, even if you wouldn’t wear it in public.  write your chosen family letters, even if you hand deliver them.  write poetry, even awful poetry.  revel in its awfulness.  eat dark chocolate and when your chosen family want to go out, try to go out with them sometimes, even if its just to the market.
