Random LMK thoughts

So, I've been randomly thinking about a particular episode from LMK.

Shadow play

Random LMK Thoughts

Particularly Mac's story of Wukong seemingly killing him.

And, I can't decide if the story is the truth.

Why you may ask?

Because we only ever really get Mac's side.

While Wukong does seem to have guilt related to Mac, there is one thing he never does. Tell his precise relations and back story with Mac. We only ever hear this story from Mac and Wukong only ever really says he and Mac use to be friends (as indicated in the scroll Brotherhood banquet scene) or rivals.

We only ever hear about Mac's death from the monkey himself initially, and later from Lady Bone Demon. As far as I know even Tang did not know about Mac having any relation to Wukong till he met him the first time. So the Six Eared Marquis must have never been mentioned in their version of the Journy to the West.

But, if the battle had been so major, why was it not a part of the journey's story in their universe?

If I had to guess, 3 major things come to mind for why.

The battle happened in seclusion and even the pilgrim's and gods didn't know what happened, and with Wukong being silent no one wrote about this event.

Something led to all accounts of Wukong and Mac's relations and battle being struck from the record.

The battle was not a major battle or was deemed to personal to Wukong by the group and it was never talked about. Which lead to it never being mentioned in legend.

All 3 are viable reasons, But all 3 put forth a problem of whether Wukong actually killed Mac. Why? Because Wukong's guilt could just be related to him hurting Mac instead of killing him or, just as likely, leaving Mac alone unconscious and unable to defend himself.

And what imagery I can find of Mac's scar (because the man seems to have a constant glamor up) Indicated it was more likely a sword or sharp slash wound than a blunt force skull crunch that did the damage.

Random LMK Thoughts

And with Mac's story indicating Wokong was using the golden staff or the Ruyi Jingu Bang a slash wound would not make sense.

As such, I would like to say Mac is lying, or at least lying in the sense that he does not know the truth.

I think, Wukong possibly knocked Mac out and left him where he was before continuing the journey. And then, someone else came along and decided to use Mac as a puppet by lying to him. After all, we don't know when Wukong's group dealt with the Lady Bone Demon, so, if it happened after Wukong's battle with Mac and the false Mayor and LBD's spirit could show Mac a false set of events. (which she has been shown to manipulate people mentally). Then she could stage it like Wukong killed Mac and she revived him while leaving a bit of herself in him like she did with the fake mayor.

Another piece that gets me is LBD's use of those chains with a spell.

Random LMK Thoughts

Other than the ghosts that appear at the beginning of the spell, there is no indication their chains are related to the Diern (the MLK universe's version of the underworld). The chains shown in the story Mac told don't count because we can not verify if it as the truth. Also, The ghosts could purely be related to the LBDs powers when activating the spell. Plus the ghost imagery appears also whenever she is possessing or mentally manipulating someone.

In conclusion, I don't think Wukong killed Mac, I think Mac was fed a lie about what happened and he believed it.

If this is true, then I hope either the season 4 specials or season 5 (if it happens) shows us the truth of what happened that day from Wukong's eyes.

I any case, what you all think?

Ok. So, me being me I was rewatching the intro for LMK season 4 again, and I noticed something... Strange? No that feels wrong. Important feels like the right word. All the scenes with Wukong interacting with characters besides MK's group have the pieces of that wooden zodiac scroll flowing through the scene.

This suggests to me one of a few things might be happening.

1. The scroll is telling tales from Wukong's past and we, the viewers, are getting to see the events as MK or the like reads it.

2. The scroll is some sort of time spell that is placing MK and their group in the past of Wukong's timeline before the journey to the west. As well as potentially during it based on the outfits of Pigsy and Sandy during the scenes after Wukongs scenes.

Or

3. The scroll is being used to restrict people from the past and Wukong is interacting with them.

There are potentially many many more solutions but I'm more inclined to believe it is option 1 or 2, leaning towards 2.

In part because of Wukong's outfit and actions in the scenes. The outfit feels like before Wukong became heavily invested in fighting to protect people and a majority of the scenes seem to be happening on flower fruit mountain. The inclusion of a happy DBK and a Mac who is being nice and polite to Wukong also points me towards 1 of 2 being the case because we know in present time of the show that the three are not on good terms with eachother. Not to mention the deamon monkey shown who I am guessing is one of Wukong's generals.

This leads me to think that this season is going to be largely set in the past of Wukong's timeline and something is possibly trying to change history and prevent Wokong from going on the journey to the west. Which would prevent Wukong from being so well known to the wider world and a threat to all demons and celestial potentially trying to do something to rule the world.

As for the black ink monster, I believe their is a Yokai centered around how the rewriting of a tale of event enough times brings it to life through the ink. And if corrupted by the intentions of the writing these Ink creatures become very dangerous.

This is all just a theory though.

I completely agree with this, and it is't just a thing in the LMK universe. It was also somewhat of a thing in the original Journey to the West.

Wukong always worked to deal with a problem in a way to make sure it would not cause more problems to himself, his group, or the wider world in the future. Problem though? Others didn't like the way Wukong dealt with things or just pain undervalued Wukong and wanted to shove him in a corner out of the way.

(I'll be using OSP as a show of this)

First off Wukong was actually not trying to cause the wider world problems in the beginning, he was a new born creature that caused an oops because hey he was a new born and then became leader of his (her? I ask this because I've heard the type of monkey used as the basis for the monkeys of Wukong's home have a matriarchy) tribe. And after having an existential crisis (which you have to admit everyone has!) Wukong decided to go out into the world to make himself stronger, introduce himself, and Including getting immortality. Yes he is a show off, but what person doesn't't somewhat want to show of their powers in someway! Then for some reason people start messing with his tribe! Of course the guy is going to deal with the people messing with his tribe! And instead of just stopping the immediate problem wukong does 2 things, preps his people for the future by teaching them to fight and preps himself for the future by getting proper armor and weapons. Also, the dragons offer Wukong weapons when he goes to him. The problem was none of them fit his style of fighting and he eventually chose a polar because that fit his fighting style the best. The Dragon's we're only scared of Wukong after Wukong proved to be stronger then them. And they offer him things to get them on his good side and out of their property. And then he accidently scares other Damon's with his powers in his excitement. To which makes them want to get on Wukong's good side. Wukong properly planed for future problems in this case and unintentionally showed the demons why they should be scared of him.

Then what happens? The bloody Diern decides Wukongs immortality doesn't count basically and tries to steal him away to death. Can you blame the guy for fighting them and basically erasing himself from their book when that should of already been done? Erasing his people came as apart of his punishment to the Diern for messing with him when he we doing nothing wrong.

He only became a "problem" to heaven for 3 reasons (one of which comes later). Messing up the Diern (for a very good reason), unintentionally messing with the gods, and deciding to call himself "the great sage equal to heaven". So what do they do? They try and control what could be called a force of nature or carma. They do so by placing him in one position that is a waste of his talents (being a stable master), is of extremely low rank, and would clearly leave him board and unsatisfied long term. To which he retaliated, because he wanted a position befiting of his skill and calls himself the great sage equal to heaven to show them he is their equal. The gods in heaven could have taken it as a joke or reversed it to say Wukong though of them as his equals, in other words as strong fighters and rulers. But no, they thought of it as an insult to them and lead to many a fight! The second position they put him in, while more befiting, had a major problem. One you are leaving the monkey alone with their food source. Of course he was going to eat them! Wukong would be right to be mad. Plus the guy doesn't know anything about how heaven works so of course he is going to unintentionally mess up it's flow! It is't like they explained anything to him! And they did not even invite him to the festival! Maybe they had done so they could have kept an eye on him and kept him from causing more trouble!

And once he realizes, he goofed? He left heaven not to cause more trouble, because he knows he is impulsive enough to generate more. What to they do when they know Wukong caused the problem and is strong enough to beat up their people and cause havoc? They bloody go after him! Provoking Wukong into a fighting rage! If they had left it alone Wukong would have probably stayed out of the way!

Another thing that people seem to forget was that Sun Wukong wasn't the main character of the Journy to the West, or at least he wasn't meant to be. Tripitaka was meant to be the main character. Yet somehow the book always follows the Monkey kings antics.

"every major baddie problem in the lmk universe is caused by SWK not dealing with his shit properly"

expect he dealt with all the shit and i'm tired of people ignoring it to paint him as an ignorant, uncaring bastard.

(very very minor s4 spoilers, so the cut)

Demon Bull King? Got his ass whooped and was sealed away for however long years it took for an entire ass megapolis to be built literally on top of him, causing absolutely no trouble to anyone whatsoever. Oh, and what sealed DBK? The staff. And if you'd care to know SWK outside of the LEGOverse, you'd realize how strong was SWK's resolve to seal DBK - keep him relatively safe, one might say - by using his trusty staff. The guy would literally die seven times over than let go of this thing.

Also people like, ignore the fact that canonically SWK stuck around the area (for the most part to stalk MK, but still), so he was literally there to deal with the DBK family if something went southwards? He didn't, because MK was able to hold the staff and the legend of the Monkie Kid then began.

(also zero antagonistic feelings towards DBK from SWK, like, whatsoever. i bet the dude actually wanted DBK to be free, cuz he felt bad abt it)

Macaque? In a morally gray manner, still very dealt with. SWK killed the dude. He was literally as dealt with as it can be. Or what, should SWK have predicted that after thousand upon thousand of years later a spirit (he dealt with too) would pull Mac out of Diyu? Yeah, I'd like to see that thought process.

SWK isn't omnipotent, he isn't even that far-thinking. Never was, actually. So holding that against him is like, very stupid. Especially because you don't do it to any other character in the show.

Spider Queen? Wouldja look at that, also pretty much dealt with. We don't really know how exactly, but we know that she lost literally every ounce of power she had and had to resort to living in the sewers, prolly never to cause troubles ever again because, well, we never even heard of her until the special. SQ was pulled onto the scene by the Lady Bone Demon.

Which is, again, something SWK couldn't predict even if he tried.

And now into the fun part.

Lady Bone Demon? Was sealed away by Tripitaka and also didn't cause any trouble until DBK decided to use this freaky coffin he knew literally zero things about for his plans.

"But he should've killed LBD!!!"

He tried. Believe him he tried. This decision just wasn't his, and if you hold it against him and not Tripitaka, shame on you.

"He should have told the crew about LBD!"

He really couldn't have.

And people thinking that are blatantly ignoring SWK's character. Not that obnoxious fan favorite uncaring bastard one.

SWK deals with things on his own. That is just how he is, how he always was and he never learned to do it the other way around. If that's a fight, he'll do it, because he's damn strong. If it's to scout the mountain, he'll do it, because Bajie is a lazy ass motherfucker. If it's to find food for Trip, he'll do it, cuz he's fast and his eyes are awesome.

Same applies here.

LBD? Tried to kill her and Trip didn't let me -> Basically I didn't do the job right -> WTF I always do my job right, I am Sun Wukong hello???

It was, dare I say, a question to his pride, and SWK will forever be prideful. And when he acts on his pride, he does it with style and flare, in the most stupid way possible.

Hence all of the s2 off-screen investigation arc.

"Well, he should've told about the Samadhi rings!"

It would've endangered Mei, questioned his at this point in time very shaky authority and ability to handle shit, and prolly would've fucked Mei up a very whole lot.

You don't go and say to a person that they are a part of the most dangerous seal in the world and could die and destroy everything they love because you fucked up long time ago (again, very much jabbing at his mentality of 'Sun Wukong can do no bad job, and if he does he'll better fucking die trying to make it right').

Was his plan a shitty one? Obviously. Like, no question asked, it was a shit show of a plan. Very in character, though (SWK handles all the shit because he thinks he can).

And this little character arc of SWK not learning a damn thing results in him, oh golly you would not believe it, running off to do things on his own because he thinks he can handle it, because he's THE Sun Wukong who already handled this in the past.

Who woulda thought.

MINOR S4 SPOILERS HERE

And the new addition to the baddie group, Azure Lion. Won't be addressing all 'SWK is a betraying bitch' because the show refuses to give us SWK's perspective and I hate it.

But you already know what I will say, because you know the truth. He was dealt with. Got his ass whooped and sealed away in the inky scroll. To be pulled back onto the scene by a third party that Wukong literally couldn't have known about.

See a pattern?

SWK deals with the shit, some unknown variable meddles in it, suddenly SWK is an incapable asshole who left the problems for the poor lmk crew to deal with.

Wukong did his job. Someone fucked him over by undoing his job. He tried to deal with it again the only way he knows how, but the solo play doesn't fly anymore, so he made it kinda worse.

He's not an unbearable, incapable asshole because of it.

And I'm tired of people not seeing this.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk, I am Sun Wukong Apologist till the day I die.

Have a nice day!

Very good information for any fanfiction feader on AO3.

A quick tutorial on how to Download Fics from AO3

After making this poll about the panic that comes when Archive of Our Own goes down, there seems to be a chunk of folks who didn't know they could download fics for offline use, or don't know how to go about it. Here's a quick tutorial for that.

You do not need an AO3 account (unless the fic you are trying to download is restricted to AO3 users only) you only need an internet connection and a device to download to, whether it's PC or a phone.

These instructions work for both desktop and mobile. At the top of the fic, where the chapter index is, there will be the download option on the right side, and an 'Entire Work' button the left side.

A screen shot of the buttons on the top of a AO3 fic chapter. There are red arrows pointing to the 'Entire Work' and 'Download' buttons showing where they are.
Entire Work means to show the entire work (all chapters) for multi-chapter fics.
Download is what you click to show the download options

For One-Shots: Go ahead and click the download button.

For multiple chapter fics: In order to have the fic download all together instead of downloading each chapter individually, make sure you select the 'Entire Work' button. Like the names says, it displays the entire work on the webpage, and will download the entire fic with all it's chapters in the correct order when you go to download.

Click the download button. You've got a couple of options:

A drop down menu of AO3's download button. the buttons are AZW3, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, and HTML

AZW3 - Amazon-developed ebook format that is designed for Kindles and Amazon's systems. Good if you want to read off of a kindle.

EPUB - Standard file format for Ebooks and is basically used as the default for pretty much most ebook readers. This is what I prefer to use when downloading to my phone.

MOBI - An older version of the AZW3. Older but standard as well.

PDF - Downloads the fics as a PDF. Can be read anywhere you can open a PDF.

HTML - Downloads an offline version of the exact webpage you are looking at. Fine if you want to keep the 'look' of AO3 but you can't change the text size or reading style like you can with ebook formats.

Not sure which one to download? Use EPUB since it's standard and readable by pretty much everything, retains images too.

You now have your fic downloaded to your device and can read it on whatever reading app you have. YAY!

Do keep in mind that these are offline files that do not synch with Archive. So if you download an ongoing fic that updates or is edited since you last downloaded, you will need to download it again to have the updated version.

Happy Reading!
