I’ve Seen A Lot Of People Genuinely Confused About Shachi And Penguin’s Relationship In Canon. I

i’ve seen a lot of people genuinely confused about shachi and penguin’s relationship in canon. i happen to be hyperfixated on them both, so i thought i’d write a post briefly explaining the origin of their bond!!

i think the confusion stems from the fact most one piece fans haven’t read law’s novel, and learned more about penguin and shachi exclusively through the wiki, which (despite the editors’ much appreciated work) sometimes lacks info. when the wiki says “their parents were killed in a tsunami” it doesn’t mean they share the same parents, as someone seems to think. this is clarified in law’s novel (thank you @/odaslaughtale for your translation!), in the paragraph where penguin opens up about their past.

An excerpt from the first chapter of Law's novel, that reads as follows:

-Shachi's parents and mine died six months ago, Penguin blows.

At the time, I do not know what to say, but Penguin continues without further delay.

-That day, Shachi, his parents, as well as me and mine, we were having a barbecue on the most beautiful beach on all of Swallow Island. It was party time, everyone was enjoying themselves, and no one had noticed the strange aspect of the sea... we had not realized that a huge wave was approaching at high speed. A wave so big that it could have swallowed up the whole island. Shachi and I were saved, because we were playing tree climbing further inland, but our respective family members... were all washed away...

At this point in the story, Penguin suddenly withdraws. He does his best to contain his tears.

Then, after a short pause, he resumes speaking, evoking in snatches what happened to them next. Their remaining families have agreed to entrust them both to Shachi's uncle and aunt. However, the uncle and aunt did not want children, but drudgery "tools". Penguin and Shachi found themselves embroiled in weapons smuggling and jewelry store heists, against their will. To eat, they were only allowed water and a little bread.

plus, if they were related, i don’t think there would have been a point in specifying the people that took them in after the death of their parents were exclusively shachi’s relatives and not penguin’s.

we don’t know exactly when shachi and penguin met, but since their parents knew each other and it was normal for the two families to hang out together, it’s not a stretch to think they have known each other since birth due to their parents being friends or something like that. it warms my heart just thinking about it sorry

i obviously don’t have anything against people that see penguin and shachi as siblings; everyone is allowed to interpret the relationship between characters as they’d like (when no type of bond is explicitly stated in canon!!!), and exchanging ideas and headcanons is without doubt one of the best parts of fandom culture. however, i don’t want people to unknowingly spread misinformation, especially since law’s novel isn’t available in all languages and some may not have access to it. so i thought a post like this might be useful!!

also, ships are very personal, taste is subjective, it's alright if you don't like them! personally i read that moment as a throwaway gag so i didn't think much of it...

A fanart of Sabo and Law from One Piece. Law is wearing a white tank top, and Sabo is sporting his usual vest and shirt combo, but with inverted colors (white vest and blue shirt), alongside his white cravat and black belt.

They're standing very close to each other, their lips almost touching, just a breeze away from a kiss. Law is on Sabo's left, his head perked up in order to reach him. The scenery is quite dark, the background being on the blue-ish/purple tone. The only light source is a warm light coming (unrealistically) from Sabo and Law's own faces. Law's whole expression is hidden for the viewer, unlike Sabo's, which is soft, uncertain, but full of desire. It all feels very intimate.

I really didn’t expect shuggy to be this popular :o like yeah I guess it has more fans but it’s one of the three op ships there??? I really thought they weren’t like that

yeah me too honestly!!! it was a big surprise (positively). i knew shuggy nation went hard on tumblr but i expected other ships to take their place in the top 100, for example i really hoped namivivi would be included.

i think the live action really helped shuggy become more popular and that's great!! praying for the ship to grow even bigger with season 2...

anyways am i losing my mind or are the Concept Arts by wit studio actually just traced from oda's art. like obv ofc theyre mimicking his style best they can (which i dont really see any merit in bc like. if u want to see one piece as close to oda's style as it is why not just. read the manga.) but like did anyone else notice the little concepts are just like. some traced bullshit LOL . like idk maybe they Meant to trace to again FULLY MIMIC oda's style but like. idk. that just makes it a million times more lifeless to me bc girl thats not your concepts that just. oda's concepts. LOL.

(also im an artist so i know the difference between tracing and referencing. theres no way for lines to be one to one like that with "referencing" but again maybe they meant to trace and this doesnt matter but its just something thats making me dislike the adaptation even more LOL)

trying not to think about the fact shanks was probably abandoned because his father only needed one heir, and it was shamrock, so shanks wasn't worth raising. trying not to think about the impact this might have on shanks once he knows. trying not to think about how buggy has always felt sidelined, like roger's "second choice", an afterthought, while he saw shanks as the "favorite kid", always praised, always celebrated, oblivious to the fact shanks was once the second choice too. trying not to think about how, once again, shanks and buggy mirror each other perfectly, but it still didn't stop their relationship from shattering
