Life is about the journey, not the destination, right? Some of my most enjoyed reading time has been spent experiencing long, unfinished but satisfying fics. These fics may not be finished, they may leave you wanting more, but in a 'I could eat more because, dang that was tasty’ kind of way. But isn't that kind of a good thing? If you enjoy these, I recommend subscribing to them as a small and powerful act of hope. One day, you may be surprised by an update or additional chapter. It's happened before! {;-)

This au fic is sooo layered, so creative, sooo…. I haven’t come anything like it. It honours the games and characters by following canon touchstones, but through a new lens. Miles, Maya, and oooh Phoenix, are just written so sweetly and charismatically. Great dialogue, great emotional moments, and the foreshadowing and Easter eggs just so generously given! I imagine the authors’ living quarters are wall papered with stickies and red strings cross-crossing to multiple rooms to keep track of them all. Also read if you like cliff hangers. Around chapter 20, the author evolves into the GOAT of cliff hanger crafters. This is the longest bookmark rec I’ve ever written for

2. Saturation by TiedyedTrickster

Rating: G Words: 311, 066

This is a magnum opus of slow burns. Even though it is unfinished, it’s so worth your time to get into. Miles' character growth is really the heart of the story. The author describes the story as 'An exploration that begins with colour, continues with grey-scale, then fluctuates between the two...'. Delicate and lovely yet substantial. Kinda like Miles!

3. (Ya Got) Trouble by Chatvert

Rating: E Words: 303, 655

I wish that this work was complete (we are sitting at 44 of 48 Chapters) but really, it doesn't matter. This fic has some of the *best* Maya lines I've ever come across. The dialogue and banter is SO GOOD! Recommending for those that like sweet, sexy and sensitive portrayals of canon adjacent characters (read the tags for more details).

4. A Brief for the Defense by orphan_account (May have been Ophelia_Writes?)

Rating: T Words: 261, 895

Sadly orphaned, I still think this is a top contender for one of the best fanfics I have ever read. Tender, laugh out loud humour, pain, healing, insightful, thoroughly entertaining…Look at the number of comments, Kudos and Bookmarks! It is so worth your time. Sending lots of love and gratitude to the author, wherever they may be ❤️

5. A Series of Turnabouts by LeFlayART

Rating: E Words: 128, 264

Yeah, ok this is a series so I'm kind of cheating, but I think it still meets my 'over 100,000 words collectively and marked unfinished' criteria for this list. For folks who are driven nuts by incompleteness, go enjoy the first two stories in the series. It's only the last one that is unfinished.

Interesting and sometimes explicit long fic where it's revealed that Miles is related to the Feys. Epic in scale and feels.

6. BONUS Super long Chat Fic!

Virtual, Visual, Viral by TrueImmortality

Rating: M Words: (who knows?! This story is 173 chapters (so far) of phone text screenshots. It took me days to read it.

The feels! Incredible emotional mileage given out of screen captured texts. Some are funny, some infuriating, some tender and all with heart. Woah, also some unexpected ´A-game ´ cliff hangers and drama story arcs. And playlists! File under “came here for the story, left with a massively loaded playlist.”

Amazing.

tf2 and pwaa have been my 2 most recent hyperfixations, and i am enamored with both sniperscout and nrmt. here are my personal faves for each! these are all completed works

sniperscout:

-Golden Brown* by Ali_Ker (Alina Kerrin) on AO3; 65k+ words.

Scout gets a crush on Sniper, and he's coping with it while falling in love with him. The tension in this one is incredible, and so is the drama. There's a lot of commentary about queerness that I appreciate here.

-Take Me Out* by Ali_Ker (Alina Kerrin) on AO3; 60k+ words.

This is Golden Brown from Sniper's point of view. It really just makes the original piece stronger, and it's great as a standalone fic too.

-Running Blind by TheTriggeredHappy on AO3; 63k+ words.

WHERE to even start with this one. This one is such a journey to take. Scout loses his vision during an accident at work, and Sniper is tasked with taking care of him. The last chapter is written really beautifully, I can't do it enough justice here.

-Marry You?* by StarlightSinger32 on AO3; 72k+ words.

This one is a 'married in Vegas' fic. It's overall lighthearted, compared to some of the others on the list, and its a very fun read. LOTS of pining.

narumitsu:

-One of Every Color* by Croik on FF.net; 85k+ words.

I simply could not put this one down, I read this entire fic in one sitting because it was THAT entertaining. There's a lot of drama here, and it's about a case that Phoenix takes on and quickly regrets, and it leads to him and Miles establishing a relationship.

-The Turnabout Guard by higherfurtherfaster on AO3; 40k+ words.

This fic feels like something that would happen in universe, it's the perfect mix of silly and seriously good writing. The case that this fic is about seriously had me trying to solve it before it was revealed. Highly recommend especially if you loved Rise From the Ashes.

-Talk Me Down* by halfdemonvash on AO3; 69k+ words.

This. This is the fic that inspired me to keep a list of all of my favorites, because I didn't want to lose them. I cannot praise the writing enough here. This fic expands on what happened during the 7 year gap between Phoenix and Miles, as they repair their relationship, and as Phoenix repairs his life. Good stuff.

-Concluding Arguments by sunsmasher on AO3; 2k+ words.

A one-shot set after the Matt Engarde trial, in which Phoenix and Miles discuss their relationship and what to do. I really love this one because I think their characterizations are just perfect here.

bonus fic:

-not a ship fic but so carry me from these walls, brother of mine! by hydrancheas on AO3 is spectacular, vk siblings will always make me cry 😭

if you like these, then i highly recommend the writers' other works as well! they are all very skilled, highly recommend.
