“Mary’s Accession To The Throne Thrust Her Into Yet Another Nontraditional Role: Regnant Queen. Mary

“Mary’s accession to the throne thrust her into yet another nontraditional role: regnant queen. Mary was the first woman to claim the English crown since Empress Matilda did so in the twelfth century; unlike Matilda, she was the first woman to successfully hold the throne. In the intervening years a number of strong queen consorts had exerted influence over reigning kings, but not until Mary ascended to the throne did a woman have control over the realm in her own right. She ruled as a single queen, as her sister Elizabeth did after her, and also as a married queen, having decided to marry for the sake of producing an heir to the throne, like her father did before her. She would take on the roles of Virgin Queen, wife, and would-be mother, and she would usher in an unprecedented time period in the history of Great Britain, when a trio of female monarchs, Mary herself, her successor Elizabeth I, and Mary, queen of Scots, would rule England and Scotland for half a century. Yet Mary, as the first of these three remarkable rulers, had no role model (except perhaps her grandmother Isabel), and no precedent to follow in defining her untraditional role as queen regnant of England. She was the first woman to take the political helm of her kingdom at a time when the nature of female rule created ambiguous feelings at best. Yet she successfully established herself as both king and queen of England; negotiated with the Emperor Charles V for her own marriage with his son Philip of Spain, the highest ranking Catholic prince in Europe, in a marriage treaty that gave Mary autonomy; and reintroduced Catholicism to England. In spite of her reputation for failure, it has been said by one historian that her only real failure was in dying too soon and by another that her only failure was in dying without having produced a child of her own to follow in her footsteps. What if Mary’s two false pregnancies had resulted in the birth of a living child? This is another liminal moment in Mary’s life—had she been succeeded by a Catholic Tudor heir, her reputation as “Bloody” might not have had the staying power that it has had.”

this is another scene that absolutely lights my brain on fire -

This Is Another Scene That Absolutely Lights My Brain On Fire -

There's a lot going on here and imo the way Felix reacts to Annabel talking shit about Oliver is SO telling from a characterization standpoint. Like Annabel is essentially telling him "no one likes your boy bestie and the girls think he's weird." It's so interesting because Felix doesn't necessarily *defend* Oliver here, he doesn't enlighten her to his tragic backstory, doesn't tell her "actually he's really inspirational because you don't know what he's gone through to be here." He instead just gently chastises her for being harsh and snobby and then....the next scene is literally Felix fucking her while Oliver watches. THIS IS INSANE LOL. So much to unpack.

First of all, it's definitely worth mentioning that Felix DOES hype Oliver up to the people who truly matter to him (his parents, his sister, etc). Like Elspeth is fully aware of Oliver's tragic and triumphant backstory before Oliver even arrives. She's also been told that Oliver is intelligent and handsome ("I told you he wasn't a minger" said looking so pleased with himself for bringing a handsome boy home LOL). Venetia has also clearly heard all about how much Felix likes Oliver ("oh I see why Felix likes you so much.") These statements put what happens here with Annabel in a very unique context. It's almost like...Felix doesn't want to share these amazing things about Oliver with his peer group at school. We talk all the time about Oliver gatekeeping Felix but not enough about how Felix is kinda gatekeeping Oliver, especially from the girls at Oxford. Felix doesn't want irrelevant people at Oxford knowing how amazing Oliver is because Felix wants Oliver and his inspirational achievements all to himself. Hm it's almost like Felix and Oliver BOTH struggle with boundaries bc they're both terminally obsessed with each other lol.

What happens after this scene is enough to make me clinically insane LOL. The cutaway is literally Oliver bricked up about to cum untouched while crying and watching as Felix fucks the girl who was just talking shit about him!! The rituals are SO intricate here hahah. In my mind - it's almost like Felix is getting off to the fact that this girl doesn't know about his little secrets with Oliver. She's only allowed to see the most surface levels of him and Felix is literally turned on by the fact that other people don't have access to Oliver the way he does. He'll leave the blinds open while he fucks her in plain sight BUT he won't share even the most basic details about his close relationship with Oliver. He keeps Oliver all for himself but lets the world see him fucking Annabel. It's an insane metaphor honestly and so telling as to what is sacred vs. what's meaningless to Felix. Felix doesn't want to share Oliver just as much as Oliver doesn't want to share Felix. Two sides of the same coin imo, just expressed differently!

Maybe the London Transport Museum?

Just some boring detail to add to my last post: the London Transport enamel badges were actual worn by London Underground workers. However, I can’t find an exact match even with that detail. I’ll assume it belongs to the BBC / has been with them for a while, or it belongs to a museum and I simply can’t source it because it’s not online. There’s a close version of what I’m on about here

Harry, Unable To Cope With The Lack Of Voldemort's Presence In His Life, Feels Guilt And Silently Grieves

Harry, unable to cope with the lack of Voldemort's presence in his life, feels guilt and silently grieves since the absence in his soul became apparent. He hallucinates Voldemort looking half-dead and decomposing, haunting and comforting him at the same time.

This reminds of a twitter post I saw the other day. OP says they never understand why snowing makes some people happy, because it makes a lot of other people’s lives worse. That post single-handedly destroyed my biggest joy in life since childhood. I can understand how thunderstorms can be very dangerous and also I don’t necessarily need them in my life, but how can I not wishing for snow to happen???????

The production trailer of Becoming Elizabeth addresses Mary as Mary Tudor, while Elizabeth and Edward are addressed as Elizabeth I and Edward VI.

BTW happy to know that the actress Romola Garai was born in Hong Kong.

I loved him at first sight. I have learned to love him more. I will love him until I die. I wish in next life I could still be in the same world which has his soul.
