It was safe to say that your future had been planned out the moment your mother had learned she was pregnant with you. There had been two outcomes.

The first one, and your fatherโ€™s preference, was you were born a son, not the eldest, but another heir he would be able to ensure takes over some political aspect he would hand off when he passes, someone to speak with the same ire that he holds, someone to wield his power as harshly as he does.

The second, your motherโ€™s fear, was you were born a daughter, a much less powerful pawn, but a pawn none-the-less, someone to be married off to the highest bidder, so to say.

It appeared that the gods wished to laugh the day you were born, your father leaving the delivery room once he learned you were a daughter, the second, of his five children, and the youngest of all.

Your mother named you, your older sister, though a mere four years older than you, took a shine to your chubby cheeks and quiet giggles.

As you grew the normal childlike curiosity that your older brothers had been allowed was punished out of you, instead lessons regarding lady-like things filled your days.

Your entire life, the mere sixteen years you had lived them, all lead up to today; learning who you were to be wed to.

Your sister had been married four years prior, though the man was quite older, she got lucky; he was respectful, he was powerful and rich, he had concubines, but from the letters you got, all the women were rather kind, treating your sister with respect. You were happy for her, if not a tad bit envious.

You had met many of your fatherโ€™s business partners, men his age who leered at you for far too long, and you had to fight the urge to take refuge in your mothers arms like you would as a child.

Your name was called, and you lifted your head, hands folded in your lap as your father continued reading whatever letter he had been sent, and you waited, with a level of patience youโ€™d been forced to learn. Your mother looked anxious, face pale and eyebrows pinched.

โ€œI have found a husband for you,โ€ He spoke without looking your way, and your mother lowered her mug of tea, hands trembling ever so slightly; you were the last child in your home.

โ€œHeโ€™s from the East hemisphere. Heโ€™s recently come into power, but his people seem to follow him almost blindly. Heโ€™s got strong connections, many that shall be beneficial regarding trade of resources and weapons.โ€ He finally looked up from the letter, gaze as bored as if he were discussing the weather and not his final childโ€™s future, โ€œHe and I have been in contact for a few weeks, you shall sail out at the end of this week. I expect to hear from you the moment your wedding night is over.โ€

He said nothing more, barely bidding you and your mother a goodbye or a goodnight as he left, handing the papers off to be dropped in his office. Once he was out of earshot you turned to your mother, tears building in your eyes.

โ€œMotherโ€” the East hemisphere?โ€ Your voice shook, and she was quick to move from her seat, hurrying over to you, her own trembling hands caressing your face, smoothing your hair.

โ€œI know darling,โ€ She tried smiling at you, but with her own budding tears it looked rather forced, pained even, โ€œYour father barely spoke to me about it before he told you. If I had knownโ€ฆโ€

The sentence lay empty because you knewโ€” she could have fought and screamed at your father, but it would have all been for nothing. She took a shaky breath, taking your hands and pulling you to stand, arm in arm as you two walked back to your room.

โ€œI donโ€™t know much about him,โ€ She admitted, โ€œOnly the parts your father cares about. Heโ€™s powerful and wealthy, he has connections and access to things we do not.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s transactional to him,โ€ Your voice was quiet but cold, you werenโ€™t his child you were his pawn, โ€œNothing more.โ€

She nodded apprehensively, โ€œBut some of the servants have told me he reads as a kind man, his words are thoughtful. I shall let you know more as soon as I find it.โ€

She kissed your forehead, leaving you alone at your bedroom door.

That week flew by, far faster than you could have ever hoped. Your clothes were packed away, any jewelry and makeup you wished to bring as well. Soon your roomโ€” your old roomโ€” lay bare, sans the bed. You were grateful that you had been allowed to bring your cat, a cuddly girl you found in the garden when you were thirteen, Cherry.

Your send off was a blur; your brain was in a fog as your mother held you, silently sobbing. Your oldest brother, who still lived nearby, his wife and his children had come as well. He was almost a stranger to you, stiffly wishing you a safe voyage, and a happy marriage. Your sister in law, pregnant with her fourth child, kissed your cheeks, telling you she hoped for your health.

Your father merely sent you off with this: โ€œDo not disappoint me.โ€ย

Your days at sea were long, the ocean still. You had witnessed storms destroy the docks in your hometown, and feared the worst, but she allowed you a peaceful voyage.

You spent your time playing with Cherry in your bunker, writing letters youโ€™d send off to your mother the moment you were able, and imagining your life ahead.

All you had learned about your future husband was that he sounded kind, that he spoke of you respectfully and promised your father youโ€™d be safe in his home. Your father hadnโ€™t even asked about that, only caring to learn of what benefits heโ€™d receive. But your future husband had made sure to discuss more about ensuring your safety and wellbeing.ย

You had slowly started growing used to the rocking of the sea when you all docked upon land, and you were ushered from your bunker, Cherry purring in your arms as you walked on shaky legs onto the docks.

It wasโ€ฆ beautiful there.

So similar yet different than you were used to. The trees there were in bloom, pink petals and flowers floating around in the warm breeze. You stood for a moment, observing the land around you, the workers bustling past with your few boxes of things, mostly crates of gifts from your father to your future husband and his clan.

โ€œAre you alright?โ€

You jumped, blinking as you turned your attention to the small group of men standing before you. You were always grateful that you had been privileged to learn a multitude of languages throughout your life, and nodded slowly.

โ€œYes. I apologize itโ€™sโ€ฆ quite beautiful here.โ€

The man before you smiled softly, bowing slightly as you stepped closer, โ€œIโ€™m Hiragi Toma, Iโ€™ll be escorting you to your new home.โ€

You smiled, swallowing back nerves, โ€œThank you, Hiragi. Itโ€™s a pleasure.โ€

He held his arm out, indicating you to walk forward, and the leftover group shifted, allowing the pair of you to walk through them.

โ€œI imagine you have questions,โ€ His voice broke you out of the beginning of your thoughts, and you looked down to Cherry, who looked up at you with a slow blink.

โ€œMany,โ€ You admitted shly, โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œAsk away,โ€ The pair of you had gotten to what appeared to be a carriage, but there was no roof, and only two horses appeared to be pulling it.

He helped you in, taking a seat across from you, as two more men piled in, one with light blonde hair, and another with dual colors; a feature you had never seen in person.

โ€œAsk?โ€

The horses pulled off, and the four of you lurched lightly, Hiragi raised an eyebrow at you, โ€œYes. We may not be able to answer them all, but we can answer a few I imagine.โ€

Your lips pursed, petting over Cherryโ€™s fur to calm the spike of nerves you felt.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

You cleared your throat, โ€œForgive meโ€ฆ My father had taught me not to ask questions.โ€

The dual-haired man snorted, and your attention turned to him, before your gaze flickered back to Hiragi.ย

Hiragi offered you a soft smile, โ€œI find we handle things differently here than most other places, even on this side of the world. If you have questions you are more than welcome to ask.โ€

โ€œMy husband,โ€ You blurted out before you could stop, โ€œWhatโ€™sโ€ฆ he like?โ€

The three stared at you, and silence fell, the only sound of the horses walking.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ hadnโ€™t read any of his letters?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not allowed to read letters my father receives, itโ€™s private information Iโ€™m not privileged to witness.โ€

Hiragi shook his head, and the blonde next to you clicked his tongue, โ€œAnd here we thought you were so stuck up you werenโ€™t responding to him.โ€

โ€œKaji,โ€ Hiragi hissed his name, face pinched, before he sighed, โ€œI suppose that answers some of our questions then. His name is Hajime Umemiya, heโ€™sโ€ฆโ€

He trailed off, as if unsure what to say or how to describe him. The other man, who the more you studied the more his hair reminded you of Cherryโ€™s fur, decided to step in.

โ€œHeโ€™s strong.โ€ His voice was firm as he spoke, โ€œTook his position like it was absolutely nothing. I aim to pass him one day.โ€

โ€œAnd take his wife in the process?โ€ Kaji questioned, and that notion had both of your faces burning red.

โ€œNo!โ€ He leaned forward, โ€œI want the spotโ€” not his damn wife!โ€

Kaji rolled his eyes, โ€œSure.โ€

โ€œI have no intention of ever getting married, and if I did!โ€ He pointed a finger in your direction, โ€œIโ€™d want a wife who can hold her own in a battle! Not someone weak!โ€

As harsh as his words were, and you did your best to hide a wince, he wasnโ€™t wrong. Your brothers had all been trained mentally as well as physically, but you and your sister could only watch in curiosity, never allowed to train with them.

โ€œSakura!โ€ Hiragi moved, a hand smacking the side of his head, โ€œYou donโ€™t insult guests in front of them, and especially a lady!โ€

He turned to you, forcing the others head down in as much of a bow as he could in the carriage, โ€œI apologize. On behalf of both of them.โ€

You shook your head, โ€œItโ€™s okay! Really!โ€

He sat up, letting go of Sakura, who looked annoyed and embarrassed, turning to stare along the scenery.ย

โ€œHe isnโ€™t wrong though, Umemiya is a very strong man. He rose in power quickly, and he helped clean up our nation more than many before him. Weโ€™ve had connections with past rivals, new trades and relationships flourishing under him,โ€ He smiled at you, eyes soft as if he were aiming to calm your racing heartbeat, โ€œBut he didnโ€™t get there alone. Heโ€™s a man who rules for his people, and everyone loves him, respects him. Heโ€™s got a soft heart, and is protective of those he holds close. Heโ€™s not cruel in anyway of the word, either.โ€

You nodded, leaning back into the seat. Hiragi seemed trustworthy, he seemed kind, if not a bit tired.

โ€œHe had been writing to you once he and your father finalized your betrothal.โ€

โ€œI- I never received any of the letters.โ€

โ€œI imagine your father kept them, though I canโ€™t guess why. Umemiya imagined something like that was the reason, he had faith you werenโ€™t turning your nose up at him when others thought that to be the case.โ€

Safe to say your father just didnโ€™t care enough to give you the letters, seeing no reason behind them.

โ€œHeโ€™s rather excited to meet you,โ€ Hiragi continued, โ€œBeen bouncing around this whole week.โ€

You giggled lightly at that, โ€œItโ€™s hard to imagine a grown man this excited over marriage.โ€

Kaji scoffed, โ€œHeโ€™s still a kid at heart,โ€ Muttering something that sounded like โ€œannoyingโ€ under his breath.

Hiragiโ€™s eyebrows furrowed a bit, โ€œHeโ€™s freshly eighteen,โ€ Your eyes widened at that fact, โ€œAnd your sixteenth birthday was a few months ago, correct?โ€

You nodded, and he smiled, โ€œYou donโ€™t have to worry about him, I doubt your father realized he wasnโ€™t as old as he thought at first.โ€

The carriage stopped moving, and someone rushed to open the door, Sakura and Kaji hoping out, followed by Hiragi, who paused and waited for you, holding your hand to help you down.

His voice was low as the carriage door shut behind you, โ€œYouโ€™ll be safe with him,โ€ You turned to look at him, but he was looking forward, โ€œI promise. Heโ€™s a good man.โ€

You followed after the three, the gardens outside of your new home beautiful and breathtaking. Standing at the entrance, clad in a beautiful looking kimono, as you learned on your voyage over, stood a man, tall and smiling. His hair was as white as winter snow, and it almost appeared ethereal against the setting sunlight.

โ€œWelcome!โ€ His voice was loud and booming, and Hiragi sighed from in front of you.ย

As you grew closer you realized that this man was Hajime Umemiya; your husband.ย

ฮฑ/ษณ: I started this with no plot in sight, and as I was writing (cause I always have a lot to say) realized... this won't all fit into one one shot. So then I was like-- okay two parts? Three parts? We'll see!

Windbreaker thoughts and ideas from my discord:

Dancing AU:

Sakuraโ€™s favorite dance style is capoeira with breakdancing flares. Heโ€™s been rejected from dance schools and classes for his borderline violent dancing, but Furin is different. He finally has the space to learn other dance styles while also getting to meet other people who like dancing the way he does.

DeAged Sakura:

Sakura takes a nap in an empty classroom and when everyone finds him, heโ€™s a child. He will never live this down, but his classmates are having the time of their lives doting on him without physical repercussion. Also Shishitoren makes him model their jacket and Togame realizes that he would literally die for child Sakura.

Furin Childhood AU:

Set ~10 years before canon and everyone is in grade school (but pasts are not canon compliant bc Iโ€™m only on the anime rn). Sakura transfers into Furin elementary school. There are shenanigans, Sakura being accepted, and everyone excitedly throwing hands with one another.

5+1:

5 times Suo flustered Sakura and 1 time Sakura flustered Suo

Gamer IRL:

Sakura gets the ability to see stats like charisma and perception (low as hell) (strength is maxed out for his levelโ€ฆ go figure) and, since heโ€™s chronically offline, doesnโ€™t understand any of it. He asks Nirei the questions, wonders why he keeps getting notifications for romance flags, and Nirei explains that in otome games, they take you to the main goal with each character. Sakuraโ€™s like โ€œmy goal is to fight people, so I guess thisโ€™ll make them more likely to fight me?โ€ And things go from there

The kitchen was warm, the scent of cinnamon and sugar strong, a welcoming scent. The lights on the tree flickered, colors dancing against the ornaments. The world outside was cold, snow slowly beginning to fall, a barely there dusting coated the ground. Inside was warm, yet far less quiet than outside. Bokuto was knee-deep in a gingerbread house mess, his half empty wine glass abandoned on the kitchen counter. Candy wrappers littered the floor around where he stood. Your fiance had a childlike smile on his face, tongue poking out from between his lips as he concentrated. Both of you had flushed cheeks, the bottle of wine you had opened for dinner was empty now, and you two were enjoying the free time the holiday season gave you.

He decided this freedom meant you two should build a gingerbread houseโ€” though youโ€™d say his energy had shifted as the building went on.

You watch him, giggling as he held the piping bag awkwardly, not used to having to hold something so precariously. The frosting application was anything but neat; messy but screaming enthusiasm.ย

The walls of the house were all tilted at different angles, some candy scattered around the house, around the floor, everywhere truly.ย

โ€œKo,โ€ You called out, hiding your smile behind your wine glass, โ€œYou may be overdoing it with the frosting.โ€

He looked over at you, grinning, โ€œIโ€™m just testing it out,โ€ He squinted down at the walls, the frosting nearly dripping from how much he was using, โ€œWant to make sure everything sticks. This is a very delicate process, you know.โ€

You crossed your arms, leaning your hip against the counter, โ€œDelicate, huh?โ€

He nodded, poking softly at one of the walls to adjust it, and you both watched as it grew more lopsided. He pulled his hands away before the whole thing collapsed.ย

โ€œItโ€™s modern.โ€ He said, voice completely serious as he stared down at the sweets.

You started laughing, leaning against him, moving to wipe off the frosting that was leftover on his cheek, โ€œModern?โ€

โ€œYeah, modern houses have likeโ€ฆ weird shaped walls, and windows.โ€

He turned to you, eyes bright, cheeks red as he smiled, proud of the house he had quite literally thrown together.ย

โ€œI donโ€™t think modern houses look like theyโ€™ll collapse if you breath too hard near them.โ€

He laughed, full bodied chuckles leaving his mouth, unbothered by the truth behind your statement, โ€œItโ€™s supposed to look like that, thatโ€™s true modern housing.โ€

Kotaro turned, rummaging through one of the many opened bags of candy, โ€œI think it just needs more candy,โ€ He stated, โ€œThe more candy, the better!โ€ย

He pilled gumdrops and chocolate pieces into his hand, popping a few pieces into his mouth, before turning to you, holding his hand out. He looked like a kid in a candy storeโ€” which, looking at the kitchen, was exactly what he was.

โ€œAlright,โ€ You took one last swig of your wine, putting the glass down as you took a few pieces from him, โ€œLetโ€™s add some more candy.โ€

You both dove in, bodies pressed against each other as you began covering every bare inch with some type of candy. The frosting was still dripping down the walls, the roof pieces barely holding onto each other. Chaotic doesnโ€™t even begin to describe the mess that this ended up being; if you stepped back and glanced at it you doubt youโ€™d even be able to have known this was a gingerbread house.

You found a kitkat, breaking it apart as you set it up, trying to make some funky roof piece, but it ended up falling over. Now it just looked like two logs hanging on for dear life.

โ€œNot bad!โ€ Ko leaned over, nodding approvingly at your addition, โ€œIf we add more frosting we can layer the candy too.โ€

He grabbed the pipping bag, looking far too determined. You could smell the inevitability happening.

โ€œI think we should leave it be,โ€ You tried sounding more serious, but the laughter broke each word, and you couldnโ€™t stop him even if you wanted to.

He squeezed the bag, a pile of frosting landing on top of the kitkat pieces, โ€œSee? It just needed a special touchโ€”โ€

In slow motion you two watched as the kitkats fell onto the counter top, followed closely by the roof pieces, chocolate pieces and gumdrops following piece by piece. The four walls stood, barely, for all of a few seconds before they collapsed on each other.ย

You two stared at it, not even in shock, before you started laughing. Loud snorts leaving you, your eyes tearing up as he joined you. It was just a gingerbread pile at this rate, and with the sheer amount of frosting on it, you wouldnโ€™t even consider it edible anymore.ย

โ€œItโ€™s fine, itโ€™s fine,โ€ He started, still giggling like a schoolkid, โ€œWe can rebuild it from the ground up.โ€

You shook your head, wiping some of the fallen tears from your cheeks, โ€œI think we should call it.โ€

He didnโ€™t argue, too busy grinning at you, your laughter, unbridled and unrestrained was one of his favorite sounds. He knew that later heโ€™d playfully grumble and complain when he had to clean, wiping the dried up frosting from the counters and throwing away all the candy he could have eaten later.ย

But that was future himโ€™s issue, now him got to enjoy the glow of alcohol in your cheeks, and the way the tree lights made your eyes look like they held galaxies. He wrapped his arms around your waist, your body still trembling from how hard you laughed at the mess you two made, feeling your warmth against his.

โ€œI love you,โ€ He mumbled, pressing a kiss to the top of your head, the smell of your shampoo mixing with the sweet scent of the wine you two had gone through, just so you that it made his heart hurt.

โ€œI love you too, Ko,โ€ You pressed closer to his chest, โ€œEven if your gingerbread house skills are subpar.โ€

โ€œSubpar?โ€ He pulled back, a faux offended look on his face, โ€œIโ€™ll have you know Iโ€™m the best decorator on the Jackels!โ€
