live reaction of me reading this prompt. ohmygod ohmygod i love this so fucking much because you are so right, anon!! there are only a few fics where Hannibal regresses and most of them (not all) take place post-fall, though many years ago i read one or two that take place after Will leaves the BSHCI. right now i have a few different scenarios, but i'm gonna make a poll so people can decide what specifically triggers Hannibal into a regressed state.

(the chapter alone is 7k words right now holy hell 😭) when i finish that, i'll definitely be starting on this prompt! Hannibal regressing has me in a chokehold i swear to god

Imagine if Hannibal had to fight back tears in the aftermath of this moment because he’d never experienced a betrayal quite like this—because he hadn’t gotten this close to anyone since he was a child—and he had finally let Will see a part of himself he’d never imagined he could share with anyone. He believed he’d been accepted up until now. My headcanon is he was punished for not being able to speak at the orphanage: beaten when he would be forced to try and speak; but no words would come out; only a weak rasp. Imagine if he struggled to continue the conversation with Will because a lump was forming in his throat and it felt too much like the strain of trying to speak as a mute child.

So he panicked and all he could do was whimper as Will—

a year or two post-fall, Will and Hannibal are content and married. one morning, Will time travels a few years in the past due to universal magic and ends up at Hannibal’s dining table, prepared to experience their last shared meal during Mizumono. though this time, Will notices the telltale cracks in Hannibal’s veneer because he can read his husband’s every tell better than anyone else—even Hannibal himself. Will realizes Hannibal must've dabbed on concealer to hide the fact that he's been crying. all it takes is a gentle murmur of “have you been crying, cher?” from Will and Hannibal is a goner—snot-nosed and sobbing into Will's shoulder.

it is still the pinnacle of obsessive love when we all realized that a serial killer who feasts on human meat to satiate his hunger can deeply be nourished at the mere sight of his lover. i like to believe that Will's existence and proximity is tantamount to a hundred or more human meals. perhaps Hannibal feels that a hundred cannibalized bodies pale in comparison to Will's love and acceptance.
