I believe that Mary in her youth was full of love and passion for adventure! Arthur opened up a new world for her and they were truly completely absorbed in each other and the events around them.
And of course she was a frequent visitor to the gangβs camp!
Actively sobbing please he's such a cynical sarcastic bastard but draws them little sentimental hearts only when he thinks of Mary
thinking about arthur and the hearts he drew in his journal

βΈ» headcanon.
leo doesn't think of himself as human. he sees himself as something primal, animalistic, nothing like the average person. one of the sole times he references himself -- DOGS BARK, BABE. SNAKES CRAWL. LEO KILLS. -- he makes direct comparisons to animals.
it's only further proof of how the project has harmed him. while fundamentally aware that he doesn't want to be this way, repeated conditioning has drilled into him that an animal is all he is ; acting on instinct, without thinking, without feeling, an intrinsic muscle memory playing out over and over for survival.
truly, it's something that causes him a lot of anguish in the brief moments when he allows himself to dwell on it. is killing something he truly enjoys, or something he has been forced to enjoy? is it enjoyment, or survival? or something else -- duty, hate? would forgoing his animal nature bring him peace, or would he find himself again with blood dripping from his hands and pooling beneath his feet whether he chose it or not?
where does leo end and the project's assassin begin?
he thinks, perhaps, the waters have become too muddied to tell. and so, he embraces what he has become, for it's all he knows now. maybe another day he'll be able to think of puppy dogs and football.
