He's a Puritan colonist whose community had a deeply held fear and hatred of witchcraft, devilry, and demons, things that define the Boiling Isles down to its very roots. At the same time, the magic clearly intrigued him, so much so that he let it consume him. More appropriately, he may blame wild magic for his affliction because it tempted him, and not that he brought it upon himself.

I have a feeling that he has some grand sense of duty to destroy the Boiling Isles and purge the world of its evil, warped even further by whatever is corrupting his body and mind.
